By the way, John and Mary are buried at Neriah Baptist Church, Rockbridge County on land donated from the Paxton farm for the church to be built. John William, their 12 year old grandson is buried next to them. Samuel was buried in a "mass grave" for Confederates at Pt. Lookout. I have been unable to find where Mary McCown Paxton is buried. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jim Jenkins" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, September 17, 2004 10:28 AM Subject: Re: [Norton AntiSpam] [VAROCKBR] Re: Rockbridge County Paxton > John Paxton, born 8/11/1797 died 12/4/1845 and Mary Childress Paxton, born > 2/17/1799 died 11/?/1858 > had one son, Samuel A. Please give me some dates associated with your GILBERTs. My g-g-g-grandfather was Leroy C. Gilbert (born abt 1808, married Mary BRADS in 1832 in Rockbridge Co, VA). Don't know when he died. Mary BRADS born abt 1813. On a recent trip to Rockbrige Co., VA, I found the Broad Creek Presbyterian Church cemetery (also known as the Miller Cemetery because Mr. Miller donated the land) where lots of GILBERTS are buried.....cemetery is located on Broad Creek Church Road. There were 2 graves in the GILBERT section which had a marker that was so old that it was unreadable, so perhaps these are Leroy & Mary's graves? I have more info on all of the GILBERTs buried there, but it's not here on my desk....will have to look it up & let you know. I have a list of Leroy & Mary's children. They had a son named Leroy Coleman GILBERT, who is buried in the cemetery mentioned above. Perhaps he is one of your relatives? Camden first appears in the Rockbridge County personal property tax list in 1844. In the next few years he is shown with Merriweather L. and William Camden. Based on this information and the fact that in Nelson Co. in 1847 he was party to the administrator's bond for the estate of William W. Camden I believe that he is the son of of this William W. Camden and Jane Hight. I have checked the Rockbridge Co. death register and have not found an entry for Chapman Camden. Is it possible that he might have moved to Augusta County and died there? Hope this helps. Sylvia

Classification: Marriage Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/4BC.2ACI/2192 Message Board Post: Marriages of Rockbridge County 1778-1850 This unique compilation of marriage records taken from original microfilms housed at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Family History Center in Salt Lake City, Utah contains close to 5,000 marriages in Rockbridge County between 1778 and 1850. Marriages are listed alphabetically by groom and includes the groom's last name, wife's maiden name, and date of marriage. The microfilm number is provided so the original record may be consulted for additional information. A separate spousal index aids in reverse researching where only the name of the spouse is known. Highly recommended if you have ancestors in this area during this time period. http://www.tracingtrees.com/ROCKBRIDGECOUNTYVA.HTML
I'm sending this to the list as it pertains to all researchers. All chancery records for Rockbridge County are in the Library of Virginia. They are NOT in the Rockbridge County courthouse. The courthouse does have an index where you can look up surnames in chancery cases. The records were sent to LVA to be microfilmed however, funding for microfilming has been cut back. The have been sitting there for several years. You can request a record from LVA but be warned that xeroxing is 50 cents a page and all the records I looked at included 10 - 20 handwritten documents from the 1860s. By the way, Samuel Wilson and Mary Mackey's daughter, Polly, married into my Davis line in Rockbridge County. Would like to share information. I am trying to find in particular information on a lawsuit between Samuel Wilson McCormick and his father Henry McCormick in about 1865. It must have been a doozy. Samuel Wilson and his brother William Henry both relocated in Texas by 1880. Other surnames. His mother, wife of Henry was Jane Willson, daugther of Samuel Willson and Mary Mackey. All of these folks are in Rodkbridge cty. > > ______________________________

No, the Stonewall Jackson Memorial Cemetery is not listed in the Rockbridge County, Virginia Cemeteries book published by the Rockbridge Area Genealogical Society. There is no full listing for those buried there, but the Rockbridge Historical Society does have a partial listing (2 volumes) compiled several years ago. If you contact them, a member will be happy to look up individuals for you. Can someone on this list tell me the names of the cemeteries in Lexington ? I'm particularly interested in those which might have been utilized between 1880 and 1910. Thanks in advance for any advice. Ed O'Connor Hudson,MA
Can anyone on this list tell me if there are directories for Lexington between 1880 and 1900 ? Mary E Charlton was listed on the 1880 Federal census for Lexington along with her family. By the time of the 1900 census, her husband and family are still listed as living in Lexington but Mary E Charlton is no longer listed. I've surmised that Mary died between 1880 and 1900 and I'm hopeful that if Directories for Lexington do exist, they may help to narrow down the date of death. Mary's husband John Charlton is no longer listed after 1900 so I've surmised that he may have died between 1900 and 1910. The same question pertains to John. Thanks in advance for any advice.
