I am new to this list, and new to researching this line. When I was researching my Thompsons of Maryland and Virginia, I would collect Brawner data for the day I began on them. I have a note about my ancestor, John Brawner, b 1763 married Nancy Ann Speake. The note says: John's father, Brawner's Farm, 2nd Bull Run. When I began chasing my Brawners, I ignored this note as early on, I received information from a kind lady who sent a genealogy and information that they were all from Charles County, MD. I haven't been able to reconcile some of the data. My Brawners didn't seem to fit anywhere. Recently, I found the biographies of some of John's descendents who say their grandfathers fought in the revolution and were from, in one case Virginia, in the other two cases, Prince William County, VA. Now I'm looking at that note more seriously. Does anyone know who settled Brawner's Farm? It would be heaven if it was John Brawner, his wife Elizabeth, and family. Norma Thompson

He was the son of 136. Raffe Bowling and 137. Unknown. He married 69. Unknown. 69. Unknown [Thomas Richard Gardiner's book--on 27 Jan 1658 James received patent for 150 acres of land located on east side of Eastern Bay, next to Kent Island and bounded in part, on the west, by Coursey's Creek, now laid out for him. (Liber Q, folio 253) 100 acres for transporting himself, and 50 acres for transporting his brother, Thomas. On 6 May 1662, the original patent to James, then spelled Boulen, was increased another 100 acres, due to an admitted mistake in the first patent. This is when brother John and sister Elizabeth appeared, and it is believed the additional acreage was patented for their transportation. This Charles Co acreage was called "Bowlingly" (Liber 7, folio 75). It is also possible that he received this land for the transportation of his wife, for on 21 Dec 1663, James Bowling and wife, Anne, released by quit claim to William and Elizabeth Calvert, all of the tract of 250 acres, known as "Bowlingly", for three thousand, two hundred pounds of tobacco.Deeds, Liber 0, No.2 Folio___ LaPlata, Charles Co, MD 1736] d. betw 7 May 1692 (will written) and 10 Oct 1693 (probated); MD Calendar of Wills, Vol 2 Folio 272. Inventories and accounts Liber 14, Folio 105; Testamentary Proceedings Liber 17, Folio 74 dates on manuscripts 1693, 1696, 1697 St. Mary's County, MD Appears to be no children of this marriage; Anne probably died young; for he married secondly to Mary Brooke, daughter of Major Thomas Brooke and Eleanor Hatton, who was sister of Elizabeth Hatton, wife of Luke Gardiner. Mary Brooke also appears to have experienced a childless marriage with James as his will of 7 May 1692 mentions no children. [Thomas Richard Gardiner's book- Lists James' brother, Thomas to receive 100 acres of 'Keets Rest', 100 acres known as 'Charley' and 150 acres of 'Bowling Plains" all adjacent to or near the Patuxent River. To his wife, Mary Brooke, he left his dwelling plantation, 'Calvert's Hope'. Elizabeth Bowling, sister of James, appears to have died before he made his will, as she is not mentioned, but her children, John and Bowling Speake are mentioned, leaving them wearing apparel. He also gave his nephews a plantation near Newport, Charles Co, and tracts of land adjoining 'Calvert's Hope' which he had purchased from Major William Boarman. The naming of his nephews, John and Bowling Speake, leaves no doubt that his sister, Elizabeth had married Colonel Thomas Speake. In a codicil to his will, James Bowling names the sons of Thomas Bowling, who were John and Roger Bowling, as "cozens" as he did Millisant Higdon. It is probable the three were not cousins but niece and nephews as they were children of his brother, Thomas. Will proved in Charles Co 10 Oct 1693.] [Katherine Bowling's book lists brother, Thomas 100 acres of 'Keets Rest',100 acres of "Miller's Choice", 125 acres "Chesam", 152 acres "Charley" and 150 acres "Bowling's Plains" all in St Mary's Co. To Richard Hubbard, Joseph (?) Speake, and to cousin, Bowling Speake, personalty. To wife, Mary, extx and residuary legatee of estate, real and personal, including "Calvert's Hope". Overseer: Father-in-law (stepfather-in-law) Henry Darnall. Test: Henry Darnall, James Cullen, William Boarman, Jr., Thomas Clarke. By codicil testator gives to brother Thomas land near Newport Town, and to wife, Mary, land in Newport Town and land purchased from Maj.William Boarman. To his nephew, John Bowling and heirs, he gives a certain plantation (unnamed) near Newport Town after the death of his brother, Thomas, said John's father. By sec. codicil dated July 17th 1692, testator orders that should wife Mary die ithout issue, all lands bequeathed to her should pass to Roger and then to John, sons of his brother, Thomas, and their heirs. To 'cozen' Millesent Higden, personalty.] Katherine Bowling's book also states that Captain James Bowling gave testimony concerning his near death due to illness at which time he mentioned a fellow named Standish being close to him (in terms of trust) as any kin. Katherine makes the point that this mention of Standish implies a possible family relationship between the Bowling and the Standish families. One of the earliest tracts of land given the Bowlings was called "Chorley" which over the years became "Charley"--further notes in a Bible from Benjamin Francis Bowling (1831-1904 Charles Co, MD) states that the Bowlings may have come from Lancashire, England.
