    1. Re: [VAPWILLI-L] Mason Bennett
    2. Donald, Thank you for the information on Mason Bennett. Sorry it has taken me so long to reply. You asked if I was trying to prove anything in particular. In fact I am. I am trying to find the parents of a certain John Bennett who married Elizabeth Dodson. As Elizabeth's family moved to Prince William County when she was a child, and I know they were members of Hamilton Parish after their marriage, I believe they were probably married in Hamilton Parish about 1749 or 1750. I was the one who posted a message looking for Hamilton Parish records a couple of weeks ago. Your reply then was also very helpful. Unfortunately, since these record were destroyed, I have not been able to determine their exact marriage date. From the information you sent, and other information I had I have been able to piece together some of the Bennetts. It seems I have a single group of related people. There is a William Bennett who had two sons named William b. 1713 and Mason b. 1711. Mason also had a son name William. The oldest William also had a brother named Thomas. The information you sent had an Edward Bennett, but I don't know how he fits in. I also don't know where John fits in but he is probably related. It is likely I have more than one John here. Here is what I have about John. JOHN BENNETT, along with DELAFAYOLLE RYNHART, received a patent for 146 acres upon Occoquan in Stafford Co. on 31 August 1711. [This John could be unrelated or a possible brother, uncle or cousin of the older William and Thomas, or perhaps their father.] E-462: JOHN BENNIT of Pr. William Co., 590 A. in said Co. adj. JOHN BENNIT, SWAN JONES, dec'd, FRANCIS JACKSON, JOHN FARROW dec'd, N. Run of Chapawamsick, S. Run of Quantico. Surv. by MR. JOHN WARNER. 10 July 1742. [Th is one is important. As the next two deeds show, this landed was divided into two parcels and sold by Mason Bennett to John Leewright and Buckner Kelly. Since some Prince William property record are lost, I do not know how Mason Bennett came to own this land.] Prince William Co., Va., Deed Book Q pp. 312-316 Indenture 1 and 3 June 1765, between JOHN LEEWRIGHT of Prince William Co., Dettingen Parish and WILLIAM CARR and THOMAS CHAPMAN, merchants and partners of aforesaid county and parish, for 30 pounds current money of Virginia, …all that tract of land containing 290 acres, part of a tract of 590 acres in Prince William Co., joining the lands OF SWAN JONES deced., FRANCIS JACKSON & JOHN FARROW. Between the North Run of the Chapawamsick and South Run of Quantico… Containing 590 acres, out of which LEEWRIGHT purchased of MASON BENNETT the foresaid 290 acres the lower part of said tract… [The description of this parcel matches exactly the description of the land granted to John Bennett in 1742] Prince William Co., Va., Deed Book Q pp. 366-368 Indenture 2 and 3 March 1765, ANTHONY BUCKNER KELLY and AMY his wife, of the county of Prince William … and FRANCIS JACKSON, of said county… for 25 pounds current money of Virginia …all that parcel of land containing 300 acres being in the county of Prince William in the parish of Dettingen being the upper part of a tract of 590 acres and joining the lands of SWAN JONES deced., the said FRANCIS JACKSON & JOHN FARROW between the North Run of the Chapawamsick and South Run of Quantico, it being the same conveyed to BUCKNER KELLY by deed of feoffment from MASON BENNETT and MARY his wife bearing the date the twenty third day of June 1760…[The description of this parcel matches exactly the description of the land granted to John Bennett in 1742] John Bennett received his land grant on July 10, 1742. The very next land grant in Prince William County was on July 12, 1742 to William Bennett, adj. to John Bennett. WILLIAM BENNETT received a patent on 21 Dec. 1742 for 250 Ac. in PW Co. adj. JOHN BENNETT'S late Survey. [This appears to indicate that this John Bennett was deceased] WILLIAM SPILLER deed land adj. land of JOHN BENNETT to daughter and son-in-law on 29 June 1748. That's a second John Bennett. [This appears to indicate that this John Bennett was living. There are a number of other deeds I have "adj. to John Bennett] The 1759 and 1760 records of John Glassford and Company of Virginia and Maryland, Purchasers at the Dumfries Store show three Bennetts, John, Mason, and William. That is what I have about John Bennett(s) or Prince William County. From looking at the map I suspect that none are the John Bennett who married Elizabeth Dodson. John and Elizabeth lived near Broad Run Creek, in an area that later became Fauquier County. "Betty Bennett" is listed as one of the original members of the Broad Run Baptist Church when it was constituted in 1762. I would appreciate any ideas you may have about where I should look for information about this marriage or who John's parents were. I am reasonably certain that the marriage occured in what was at the time Prince William County.
