    1. [VAPWILLI-L] S.P.Lee/Wash post
    2. An article appears in yesterday's Washington Post(4-17-2000,Style section) on Blair House--the residence across from the White House used for the President's guests. The article by Sarah Booth Conroy mentions this house's connection with the Lee family: Francis Blair , a Kentucky newspaper publisher, built the house for his daughter Elizabeth and her husband Samuel Phillips Lee.Samuel, according to the article, was Robert E.Lee's cousin but joined the Union Navy during the Civil War. Pictures of Samuel and Elizabeth's portraits, on display at Blair House, accompany this article. Now for the Prince William County connection--I'm a frequent user of the Freedman's Bureau microfilm at Bull Run, and I have often seen documents with the signature S.P.Lee on letters. When this bureau was reorganized in 1867, one S.P.Lee was appointed Sub assistanct Commissioner of District 10 which included Prince William County. I have a copy of one of S.P. Lee's reports for this district in which he complains about the Ku Klux Klan and their "midnight visitations". I wonder if the S.P.Lee of the Freedman's Bureau is former Admiral Samuel Phillips Lee. I'll try to follow up on this, and I'll let you all know what I find.
