I have a street map of Prince William County and I would like to know what's located at "Possum Point". The area is in green on the map which, according the map legend, indicates that it has "Special Property Limits". Does it belong to the marine base? I am interested in the area that used to be known as "Quantico Neck". is this on Possum Point? Thanks! Shelley
The large green area is probably the Virginia Power Co.'s Possum Point Power Plant. There are three peninsulas in this general area. Neabsco, where the Leesylvania State Park is has Neabsco Creek to the North and Powels Creek to the South. This area was once home to the "Light Horse" Henry Lee Family. It also is the location of some up scale homes and of course a marina or two. It was the home of an artillery site during the recent hostilities with the Northern States :-) The next peninsula south includes Cherry Hill area and Free Stone Point. This point also had and artillery emplacement which together with the one to the north could but shipping on the Potomac under fire for several miles. It is bound by Powel's Creek to the North and Quantico Creek to the South. This one includes Possum Point which is now home to a huge Virginia Power fossil fuel generating plant (probably what you are asking about). There are some private homes on the road leading to the plant. It is a good place to fish, although I don't fish. The plant warms the water. This area may be what you are looking for (Quantico Neck) or likewise the peninsula I live on may be what you are looking for. I live on the next peninsula to the south. It is bound by Quantico Creek to the North and Chopawamsic Creek to the South. Quantico Marine Base is on this peninsula. I have never heard the Quantico Neck name before. (keep reading) I would think that Quantico Neck would be either the peninsula with Quantico Marine Base on it or the one just to the North with the Possum Point Power Plant. In other words, I would suspect that it would be directly associated with Quantico Creek which was a navigable creek two hundred years ago, and now silted in. You can re-center the map by picking a place and then double clicking and it becomes the new center. These maps down load VERY slow on a 56K modem due to the amount data transmitted (I use a digital modem so don't mind). However, they can be Very useful. http://terraserver.microsoft.com/image.asp?S=15&T=2&X=47&Y=668&Z=18&W=2 Here is the search page URL for these and other USGS maps. Thanks for all the great information on Possum Point, Bill. I will check out that URL you sent me. I have some information that my great-great-grandparents' youngest child was born (in 1856) at "Quantico Neck". I had previously noted on the 1840 census that my great-great-grandparents had two slaves who were employed in "Navigation of canals, lakes and rivers". I would assume from this that they lived on a moving body of water. The Potomac? Since there is an old legend in my family that my great-great-grandfather was taken prisoner during the Civil War, this might be a motive for his "arrest". Land which was situated at a crossing point on the river would have been a strategically valuable piece of real estate during the war. If the youngest son who was born at Quantico Neck was born at home - and I believe that most babies were at that time - it would follow that my ancestors' property would have been at Quantico Neck. I would love to be able to identify exactly where this was. Maybe then I will be able to find where my great-great-grandparents are buried.
