    3. For Carolyn Lynn... I was at your site double checking some thigs and found a problem with the information for the family of Wm. LYNN & Elizabeth REID. You have a marriage date for them of abt. 1775, but you have a birth date for Nehemiah of May 7, 1760. Is this a transcription error or was Michael married to someone else before Elizabeth? Anne

    3. Hi Amber, No, I didn't get anything. I know an easy way to send in the body of an e-mail if you would like to try that. You open to the page of the first generation that you want to begin the report with, then click on the Genealogy Report button at top of page. After you do that you click on Contents button and choose the # of generations you want to show. After you do that, you click on Edit, then Copy text. Then you open your e-mail program, new message, make sure your cursor is in the body of the e-mail andclick on Edit, paste. In a few seconds your genealogy report should show up. I think this is the best way to send things because of people being afraid to open attachments because of all of these viruses going around. This way there's no worry. If you have a problem, let me know. 1. [VAPWILLI-L] Jones and Thomas Families
    2. Hundertmark
    3. There is a story in my family that, during the Civil War, my great-great-grandfather was taken prisoner (by whom, I don't know), and my great-great-grandmother and the children who were still living at home were murdered. I would like to either prove or disprove this legend. In 1860 John and Sarah (Jones) Thomas and six of their children were living in the Dumfries area. I have not been able to find a census entry for John and/or Sarah in 1870. The Thomases had at least ten children, possibly more. The known ones are: Susan Born ca 1834 William 1836 Elizabeth 1838 A son with an unreadable name beginning with the letter "L" 1843 Martha 1846 Mary 1846 Sarah 1848 (my great-grandmother) Virginia 1849 Louisa 1853 Gustavus 1857 Does anyone know of Thomas family gravesites in the Dumfries area? I would like to hear from any possible descendants. Thank you for your help. Shelley Hundertmark Brighton, Michigan

    3. Dear Donald, I accidentally sent my e-mail before it was done. I'm not sure how I did that, but somehow I did. Anyway, to conclude: The family of John and Sarah Jones Thomas appears to have been living in the Dumfries area. I would love to be able to find graves for them. Any suggestions? Thank you. Shelley

    3. Dear Donald, Thank you for your fast response to my posting. There is a legend in my family that my great-great-grandparents John and Sarah Jones Thomas and many of their children died during the Civil War. As the storu goes, my great-grandmother Sarah and one of her sisters were the only survivors. I have no idea if there is any truth to this story and, if there is, what the family died of. I do know that the family of John Thomas was found on the 1860 census butr not on the 1870 census. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Wilson, Donald L" <dlwilson@pwcgov.org> To: <VAPWILLI-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, April 05, 2000 2:04 PM Subject: RE: [VAPWILLI-L] CW era Dumfries cemeteries > Shelley - We have several compiled lists of cemeteries and burials in Prince > William County. 3. Shelley - We have several compiled lists of cemeteries and burials in Prince William County. Many cemeteries span the Civil War period (although few antebellum cemeteries here have surviving tombstones). Are you looking for a particular MILITARY cemetery? Union or Confederate? Are you looking for a particular grave? Was the decedent a resident or non-resident of Prince William County? What facts can you provide about name and military unit? All those factors will determine whether there is a marked grave or record of burial. Sincerely, Donald L. Wilson, Virginiana Librarian Ruth E. 3. The Religious Telescope was the official newspaper of the United Brethren in Christ. It was published first from Circleville Ohio then Dayton Ohio. The newspaper published not only news of The Brethren, but also general news from many states including PA, Indiana, NJ, NY, etc. In a combined effort by Sue, Maggie, and myself Names appearing in the Religious Telescope from 1836, 1837, 1841, 1862 are now online. The years 1835, 1838, 1839, 1840 will soon be added. The online information for some years contains the extracted information, for other years it contains a listing of names , place, and year. and a yes or no whether there is more information. If yes, you can contact the submitter via email for the details. The names were typed as they appeared in the Religious Telescope. The spelling for the same names changed from paper to paper so be sure to try alternate spellings. For example Nug, Zug; Cramer, Kramer; http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/oh/rt.htm This is the first time I have attempted a project like this so would appreciate any feedback, including suggestions on improvements since I still have 2 more years to do. If you write about a specific name, please include the year/page so I can locate the name and information easily. Elayne wttet@ptd.net

    1. [VAPWILLI-L] lookups-VA Genealogies & Stryder's Mill
    2. Hi, Does anyone have the book Virginia Genealogies, by Horace Edwin Hayden (Wilkes-Barre, Pa., 1891)? I'm wondering if it mentions any Cross families: John Cross (est.1813-1890), Prince William County; William Cross (d.1828), Loudoun Co. Also, does anyone know where in Prince William County Stryder's Mill was located? That's where two of John Cross's sons (John P. and Hamilton) enlisted in 1862 in Co.A, 4th VA Cav. The family lived at Rock Hill Farm which is off of what is now Pageland Lane. Thanks for any help....Bonnie in OKC

    1. Re: [VAPWILLI-L] Mason Bennett
    2. Donald, Thank you for the information on Mason Bennett. Sorry it has taken me so long to reply. You asked if I was trying to prove anything in particular. In fact I am. I am trying to find the parents of a certain John Bennett who married Elizabeth Dodson. As Elizabeth's family moved to Prince William County when she was a child, and I know they were members of Hamilton Parish after their marriage, I believe they were probably married in Hamilton Parish about 1749 or 1750. I was the one who posted a message looking for Hamilton Parish records a couple of weeks ago. Your reply then was also very helpful. Unfortunately, since these record were destroyed, I have not been able to determine their exact marriage date. From the information you sent, and other information I had I have been able to piece together some of the Bennetts. It seems I have a single group of related people. There is a William Bennett who had two sons named William b. 1713 and Mason b. 1711. Mason also had a son name William. The oldest William also had a brother named Thomas. The information you sent had an Edward Bennett, but I don't know how he fits in. I also don't know where John fits in but he is probably related. It is likely I have more than one John here. Here is what I have about John. JOHN BENNETT, along with DELAFAYOLLE RYNHART, received a patent for 146 acres upon Occoquan in Stafford Co. on 31 August 1711. [This John could be unrelated or a possible brother, uncle or cousin of the older William and Thomas, or perhaps their father.] E-462: JOHN BENNIT of Pr. William Co., 590 A. in said Co. adj. JOHN BENNIT, SWAN JONES, dec'd, FRANCIS JACKSON, JOHN FARROW dec'd, N. Run of Chapawamsick, S. Run of Quantico. Surv. by MR. JOHN WARNER. 10 July 1742. [Th is one is important. As the next two deeds show, this landed was divided into two parcels and sold by Mason Bennett to John Leewright and Buckner Kelly. Since some Prince William property record are lost, I do not know how Mason Bennett came to own this land.] Prince William Co., Va., Deed Book Q pp. 312-316 Indenture 1 and 3 June 1765, between JOHN LEEWRIGHT of Prince William Co., Dettingen Parish and WILLIAM CARR and THOMAS CHAPMAN, merchants and partners of aforesaid county and parish, for 30 pounds current money of Virginia, …all that tract of land containing 290 acres, part of a tract of 590 acres in Prince William Co., joining the lands OF SWAN JONES deced., FRANCIS JACKSON & JOHN FARROW. Between the North Run of the Chapawamsick and South Run of Quantico… Containing 590 acres, out of which LEEWRIGHT purchased of MASON BENNETT the foresaid 290 acres the lower part of said tract… [The description of this parcel matches exactly the description of the land granted to John Bennett in 1742] Prince William Co., Va., Deed Book Q pp. 366-368 Indenture 2 and 3 March 1765, ANTHONY BUCKNER KELLY and AMY his wife, of the county of Prince William … and FRANCIS JACKSON, of said county… for 25 pounds current money of Virginia …all that parcel of land containing 300 acres being in the county of Prince William in the parish of Dettingen being the upper part of a tract of 590 acres and joining the lands of SWAN JONES deced., the said FRANCIS JACKSON & JOHN FARROW between the North Run of the Chapawamsick and South Run of Quantico, it being the same conveyed to BUCKNER KELLY by deed of feoffment from MASON BENNETT and MARY his wife bearing the date the twenty third day of June 1760…[The description of this parcel matches exactly the description of the land granted to John Bennett in 1742] John Bennett received his land grant on July 10, 1742. The very next land grant in Prince William County was on July 12, 1742 to William Bennett, adj. to John Bennett. WILLIAM BENNETT received a patent on 21 Dec. 1742 for 250 Ac. in PW Co. adj. JOHN BENNETT'S late Survey. [This appears to indicate that this John Bennett was deceased] WILLIAM SPILLER deed land adj. land of JOHN BENNETT to daughter and son-in-law on 29 June 1748. That's a second John Bennett. [This appears to indicate that this John Bennett was living. There are a number of other deeds I have "adj. to John Bennett] The 1759 and 1760 records of John Glassford and Company of Virginia and Maryland, Purchasers at the Dumfries Store show three Bennetts, John, Mason, and William. That is what I have about John Bennett(s) or Prince William County. From looking at the map I suspect that none are the John Bennett who married Elizabeth Dodson. John and Elizabeth lived near Broad Run Creek, in an area that later became Fauquier County. "Betty Bennett" is listed as one of the original members of the Broad Run Baptist Church when it was constituted in 1762. I would appreciate any ideas you may have about where I should look for information about this marriage or who John's parents were. I am reasonably certain that the marriage occured in what was at the time Prince William County.
