    3. It's obvious that I need to do some serious research into Powel's Creek, Chopowamsic Creek and Quantico Creek. If anyone else has any information on this general area, I would love to hear about it. Shelley -------------------------------------- And the area about a mile or so up stream from the Potomac on BOTH Powel's Creek and Chopawamsic Creek was navigable. I would guess they were on or near either Quantico or Chopawamsic Creek. I am searching for a land claim granted on CHOPAWAMSIC Creek to a HARLE, HARROLD etc. for transporting immigrants about 1650-1700. Does anyone know if the area being discussed was being settled during that period? I have seen a reference to the land grant but had assumed Chopawamsic was further down in Va.. If this creek is the location of the claim, it could be of great importance in my research.. Thank You, G. Lee Hearl Authentic Appalachian Storyteller Abingdon, Virginia

    3. Hi, Laura Actually I don't really know anything about my Joneses. I only know that my great-great-grandmother was Sarah Jones who was born in Virginia around 1816. She married John Thomas probably in the early 1830s and they lived somewhere in the Dumfries area - possibly in "Quantico Neck", wherever that was. I wish I knew more about my Joneses and Thomases but I don't even know when John and Sarah died so I can't get death certificates for them. However, I haven't been researching this part of my family for very long so I am confident that I will eventually learn more about them. Do you have any record of a Sarah Jones who was born around 1816? Shelley ------------------------- Shelley, What Jones family are you looking for? I have John Jones in Westmoreland. (Same area as Prince William) Laura

    3. The creeks silted due to poor farming techniques that went on to ruin the land. Happily, this eventually led to the development of what is now Prince William Forest National Park. Don't know of any published works on the Quantico Creek area. You might want to contact the PWC site or try writing to the Historical Society. I believe both have a web site. The Potomac News, a local newspaper, has had a number of articles on the subject. Maybe if you contact them they can dig out their old articles. However, I wouldn't bet on that. I have had bad luck with various newspapers looking through their morgues for me. If you can make friends with a features writer then maybe you can get them to search when they have time. Most newspapers have searchable data bases of old stories. Problem is that genealogy is NOT their business and reporters cost money. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Hundertmark" <hundert@ismi.net> To: <VAPWILLI-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, April 27, 2000 9:45 PM Subject: Re: [VAPWILLI-L] Possum Point > That's really interesting about the old dock pilings being found near > Dumfries. 3. There is a listing of cemeteries that were moved, cemeteries not moved on USMC Base Quantico. Part of the page also listed the location of other little known cemeteries in the area around Quantico including some in Stafford Co., Faquire Co. and Eastern PWC. Bad news is I lost the URL last time I had to reload my OS. Maybe someone else on the list knows of this cemetery listing for the Quantico Area. ----- Original Message ----- From: <B2ill1jean@aol.com> To: <VAPWILLI-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, April 27, 2000 9:15 PM Subject: Re: [VAPWILLI-L] Help! > My Waters family settled on Cedar Creek and Philemon's Run in 1710. 2. Bill, Even though I was not the person who ask the original question I want to thank you for all that info. I too have family who lived in that area and will keep your informative letter for future reference. I am waiting for a copy of the will for my 4x great grandfather William Fairfax who owned 1,004 acres in Prince William Co and I have been lead to believe it was in the very area you talked about. We are hoping to find the land in hopes of finding a family cemetery and your info gives me lots of directions to go in. Thanks again from a list member who really lucked out today. 3. That's really interesting about the old dock pilings being found near Dumfries. I love reading about that sort of stuff. Was Quantico Creek once called Quantico River? What caused so much silt to build up in just a relatively short time? Fascinating. Do you know of any published histories about Quantico Creek and environs? Bill, do you know of any Thomas or Jones families in your neck of the woods? -- or any old Thomas or Jones family cemeteries? How about old Baptist churches? -- I believe my ancestors were Baptists. They may be buried in a church yard somewhere in the area. Shelley ------------------------------ Remember Quantico Creek was once navigable all the way up stream to Dumfries. It did silt in and become un-navigable (date unknown by me). And the area about a mile or so up stream form the Potomac on BOTH Powel's Creek and Chopawamsic Creek was navigable. I would guess they were on or near either Quantico or Chopawamsic Creek. Unfortunately, that includes two peninsulas and a large area that has change dramatically. A few years ago the town of Dumfries built a new basketball and tennis court behind the town hall. The town hall is located in a very wide spot between the north and south sides of U.S. Hwy 1. The land is 200 yards wide more or less. Guess what they found when they started the excavation... pilings from an old dock. The dock was large enough to have handled ocean going sailing ships from the 1700s. Last year they widen and leveled a small portion of the north bound side of U.S. Hwy 1 about 1/4 mile north of town hall, once again pilings. The area of Dumfries that we today drive through was mostly under water, lots of water, two hundred years ago (plus or minus). Good Luck.....

Possum Point has the Possum Point Power Plant located on the north shore of Quantico Creek. There is railroad bridge, a boat landing, dock, and recreational area on the Marine Base of the south side of Quantico Creek. Amtrack and the Rush hour Va. Railway Express travel the railroad tracks and bridge. Coming out from the shore lines (where we fish is BIG power lines that stretch from the Virginia side to the Maryland side. June

    3. Thanks for all the great information on Possum Point, Bill. I will check out that URL you sent me. I have some information that my great-great-grandparents' youngest child was born (in 1856) at "Quantico Neck". I had previously noted on the 1840 census that my great-great-grandparents had two slaves who were employed in "Navigation of canals, lakes and rivers". I would assume from this that they lived on a moving body of water. The Potomac? Since there is an old legend in my family that my great-great-grandfather was taken prisoner during the Civil War, this might be a motive for his "arrest". Land which was situated at a crossing point on the river would have been a strategically valuable piece of real estate during the war. If the youngest son who was born at Quantico Neck was born at home - and I believe that most babies were at that time - it would follow that my ancestors' property would have been at Quantico Neck. I would love to be able to identify exactly where this was. Maybe then I will be able to find where my great-great-grandparents are buried. Shelley ------------------------------------ The large green area is probably the Virginia Power Co.'s Possum Point Power Plant. There are three peninsulas in this general area. Neabsco, where the Leesylvania State Park is has Neabsco Creek to the North and Powels Creek to the South. This area was once home to the "Light Horse" Henry Lee Family. It also is the location of some up scale homes and of course a marina or two. It was the home of an artillery site during the recent hostilities with the Northern States :-) The next peninsula south includes Cherry Hill area and Free Stone Point. This point also had and artillery emplacement which together with the one to the north could but shipping on the Potomac under fire for several miles. It is bound by Powel's Creek to the North and Quantico Creek to the South. This one includes Possum Point which is now home to a huge Virginia Power fossil fuel generating plant (probably what you are asking about). There are some private homes on the road leading to the plant. It is a good place to fish, although I don't fish. The plant warms the water. This area may be what you are looking for (Quantico Neck) or likewise the peninsula I live on may be what you are looking for. I live on the next peninsula to the south. It is bound by Quantico Creek to the North and Chopawamsic Creek to the South. Quantico Marine Base is on this peninsula. I have never heard the Quantico Neck name before. (keep reading) I would think that Quantico Neck would be either the peninsula with Quantico Marine Base on it or the one just to the North with the Possum Point Power Plant. In other words, I would suspect that it would be directly associated with Quantico Creek which was a navigable creek two hundred years ago, and now silted in. (read on) This URL will take you to a map of the area. You can click various buttons and zoom in or out or even move around on the map by clicking the edges. You can re-center the map by picking a place and then double clicking and it becomes the new center. These maps down load VERY slow on a 56K modem due to the amount data transmitted (I use a digital modem so don't mind). However, they can be Very useful. http://terraserver.microsoft.com/image.asp?S=15&T=2&X=47&Y=668&Z=18&W=2 Here is the search page URL for these and other USGS maps. It will give you various clickable locals. You must choose one. Then you will get another page with a word description plus Lon. & Lat. Scroll down to the bottom of this page and you can choose a type of map. I find "Raster" (topo) and Orthophoto (satellite) the most useful. (read on) I you had more info. as to what you are looking for I might be able to be mo re helpful. If you need photos taken, I live in the area and have a digital camera. Best of luck with your search, Bill --------------------------------------- I have a street map of Prince William County and I would like to know what's located at "Possum Point". The area is in green on the map which, according the map legend, indicates that it has "Special Property Limits". Does it belong to the marine base? I am interested in the area that used to be known as "Quantico Neck". is this on Possum Point? Thanks! Shelley
