I don't mean to be repetitive, but I have another question concerning a 19th century Prince William County clergyman. His name is John Clark and he identifies himself as a "Minister of the gospel". He performed the marriage of Elizabeth Thomas and John Hutchison in Prince William County on February 12, 1861. Can anyone identify a church and/or home town for Rev. Clark? Thank you. Shelley Hundertmark
Falmouth is in Stafford Co Va.Near Fredericksburg Va.
Yes. I guess I should have considered the possibility that the clergyman may have been a circuit preacher who didn't necessarily live where he worked. Thanks, Bob. Shelley ------------------- If I'm not mistaken, Falmouth was in Stafford County, Va. Falmouth is still here, just north of Fredericksburg. Bob

You're right, Anne. I just looked it up in the atlas. My guess is that the minister was one of those traveling clergymen who may have worked out of a church (or maybe his home?) in Falmouth. Now if I can just learn which church the Rev. George W. Lightner was officiated with ... .. Thanks, Anne. Shelley ----------------------- Hello, If I'm not mistaken, Falmouth was in Stafford County, Va. Anne ------------------------ When Susan Thomas married William Williams in 1854 in Prince William County, the minister had no official return forms, so he submitted his information in a letter format. He began his letter with the dateline "Falmouth Septr 12th 1854". I have not been able to find a city or town named Falmouth on any map of Prince William County. Does anyone know where Falmouth was located? I believe the Thomas family lived near Dumfries. Perhaps Falmouth was once a township which has since been swallowed up by urban sprawl. Any clues? Also, does the name of the minister - George W. Lightner - ring any bells? He identifies himself as a "Minister of the Gospel". Thank you. Shelley Hundertmark Brighton, Michigan

What is the time frame you are referring to? If in the 1700s, the baptism of slaves was usually recorded in the Anglican parish Registers. That may be of some help to you. JBW
Hello everyone, John and Frances B. Gibson lived at an estate called Fleetwood in the Brentsville area of the county. I wonder if anyone knows of repositories of personal papers for this couple. Recently, I have become interested in their slaves-some of the servants carried the last name CHINN which is the surname of my ancestors. There were at least two groups of black Chinns in Prince William County--the descendants of Mary Jane Chinn--my group--lived around Woodbridge. The other black Chinns belonged to John and Frances B. Gibson. To date, I don't see any blood connection between the two. Sorry to ramble-- I will be glad to answer questions about black Chinns of Prince William County if anyone so desires. I've been through many Gibson public records-- now I'm hoping to see some private ones. Rhonda Jackson
In 1997, I won at auction an arrest warrant dated 1754. Below is a transcription [to the best of my abilities]. However, I do not know where this action took place. Since tobacco is mentioned, I have sent it to these lists. I anyone recognizes these names, please let me know. "July 22, 1754 Richd BECKETT to Wm GRANT ... Also, local Prince William County genealogists may have been participating in the planning and/or attending the Prince William Genealogical Society events this past weekend. KUDOS to the PWGS and all the other local historical groups who joined the Genealogical Society to participate in the "Families Remembered" weekend. A lot of hard work went into this past weekend and it showed. Great press leading up to the events and after....Truly a CLASS ACT! For the record, we had about 30 students and one teacher return to the 1st ever reunion of the Brentsville One Room School house (1928-1944) and Brentsville Courthouse (early 1900's) school. We had a wonderful time listening to stories about Brentsville, Virginia families. Thanks to everyone at PWGS! Pamela M. Sackett Vice Chairman, Friends of Brentsville Courthouse Historic Centre
I suspect you're probably right, Vickie. Maybe I have too much time on my hands. :-) Shelley ------------------------------------------------------- Hee hee! I was beginning to think I'd forgotten my deodorant or something! It is just a slow time of year, that's all. Maybe after everyone is done planting their gardens and attending school graduations and Memorial Day parades etc. they'll have time for genealogy. Vickie Elam White ----------------------------------------- I have not received anything from the Prince William Mailing List since May 8th, but I'm sure I'm not the only one ..... or am I? Anyone know the story? Shelley Hundertmark

A George W Tyler married a Jane Rebecca Simms in Washington DC in 1832. This family is to be found in Fairfax County until about 1880. I am researching the Tyler family of the area and would be interested in hearing from anyone who knows anything about Jane Rebecca Simms and her family in the hope that it might give me a lead to the Tylers. Let me hear from you-Dale

To follow up on my original posting about the Chinn House on ebay and the reply that Benjamin Tasker Chinn lived in Ben Lomond: I thought that Chinn had another residence near Chinn Ridge named Hazel Plain.I was wondering if the ebay miniature was a replica of the Hazel Plain House. Rhonda Jackson
*I apologize if this is a duplicate. I sent this info last night but it did not come through to me and I thought possibly I did something wrong. I'll try again . . . Hi, All~ I frequent ebay TOO much [sigh] and took a peek at the Chinn House. It is not a replica of the house owned by Benjamin Tasker Chinn located in Manassas. That house is quite different in style and is now called the Ben Lomond Manor House. It is located at 10311 Sudley Manor Drive in Manassas - not far from the battlefield. Now owned by the Prince William County Park Authority, the house is unique as it contains signatures of Union soldiers on many of the walls. The house was used as a hospital during the war and is currently undergoing restoration. Recent research by a member of the Ben Lomond Manor House Commission indicates that the Benjamin Tasker Chinn house was rented to Andrew Pringle during the Civil War years. Reference to it has been found as the "Pringle House" and it is mentioned in a book [aaggghhh . . . can't remember the exact name and don't have notes at hand] that is a diary of Civil War surgeon E. A. Craighill. NOTE***The Ben Lomond Manor House, [aka Benjamin Tasker Chinn house, Pringle House] will be open for viewing at the Old Rose Celebration, Saturday, May 27. [Restoration work permitting] You can see a photo of the back of this house at http://www.geocities.com/oldrosegarden and can get more historical information on the Manor House at http://www.historicprincewilliam.org/benlo/index.html The house is only open on special occasions - do come visit! Hello all, I seldom visit ebay, but today I did and,as a lark, put in the term "Chinn" into its' search engine( I'm researching black Chinns of Prince William County Virginia). Among the five "hits" was something called a "Chinn House" miniature by artist Genece Klein. The figure is small--15mm, according to the description. Does anyone know about this artist--is she local? Is this figurine a model of the Chinn House of the Manassas Battlefield--home of Benjamin Tasker Chinn? Just curious, Rhonda Jackson
