I am looking for information on the BANISTER family members that were in Pr. William and Fauquier Counties in the 1700s. If anyone has connections to them please email me at vhull@aol.com.
I have forwarded your email to several resources via The Manassas Museum System. The Manassas Industrial School/Jennie Dean Memorial is part of the Museum System. Have just received the following information: There were 3 WEBSTER households in Prince William County VA in 1830: PAGE 92, LINE 1 Webster, Jane WM age 0-5, WF age 20-30 PAGE 90, LINE 13 Webster, Phillip G. WM15-20, WM60-70 WF20-30, WF60-70 & slaves: four SM00-10, SM10-24, two SM24-36; three SF00-10, two SF10-24. PAGE 91, LINE 14 Webster, William WM00-05, WM05-10, WM10-15, WM30-40 two WF05-10, WF20-30 & slaves: SM00-10, SF10-24. Phillip G Webster looks like the man I am after. Can anyone tell me anything about this man and his family. It may be that William is his son and I believe he had daughters Lucy Ann and Matilda. Jane may have been a daughter-in-law. I believe Phillip G Webster was born prior to 1770 which fits with this Census data. I also believe Phillip's wife was Lucy Haislip (b. 1771). I would be delighted to hear anything anyone can give me about this family. Lynne Simpson Canberra Australia Lynne Simpson Canberra Australia
Dear William Thank you for that help. I have indeed contacted Don Wilson about the Websters of Prince William. He was looking for a Philip Webster for me due to the "clues" I had scraped together from what information I had. However, further information indicated that the man in question may be a William Webster. Hence the general question to VAPWILLI. Don Wilson is a wonderfully helpful resource, but I try to contact him as a last resort rather than a first base call. If anyone knows anything about a William/Philip Webster who lived in Prince William between 1780 and 1850, please let me know. Group, Since it just happened to me again, thought I might send this reminder. If you used floppy disks to backup your data files, it's a good idea to periodically run a disk check program (such as SCANDISK) on them. I keep to sets (3 disks each) of my data. Today I ran SCANDISK on both sets and found that the program couldn't read cluster 67 on one and cluster 62 on the other, both on disk # 1and that the data was probably lost. That early on disk # 1probably means that the set was useless if I needed to restore a damaged database. Dick Cazier

Dear Listers Can anyone tell me if there was a William Webster, born before 1770, who died in Prince William County before 1850. If there is such a person, did he leave a will? I believe this William Webster may have been the husband of my Lucy Haislip. I believe they were the parents of Matilda Webster (who married Caleb Simpson) and Lucy Ann Webster (who married (William) Lloyd Brawner). This is the last link in my Haislip-Brawner story which I would love to have to complete the circle. Thanks Lynne Simpson Canberra Australia
Dear June Thank you very much for your very quick response. That was really very helpful and I appreciate it enormously. Because I live so far away, I rely on people like you and their generosity. Know that you made me a very happy camper tonight. Today in Canberra we had the Olympic Torch Relay pass through the city. I was very fortunate to happen across it this morning as I was travelling to work in the outgoing lane. The incoming lane was blocked to traffic and I had a ring-side seat. I must say the lady carrying it at the time was beaming, holding her torch high and running well. Two highlights in one day! Cheers Lynne Simpson Canberra Australia (in the grip of Olympic fever!) I believe Edward Hughes and Nancy Foster to be from Prince William area. Anyone researching an Edward Hughes or Nancy Foster family??? Amber in Georgia (also looking for Copin/Copen, Guthrie, Lewis, Bolen) Francis Guthrie, (p. 108) fourth child of Dr. Nathan and Mabelle (Patterson) Guthrie, studied medicine and afterwards theology and became a prominent minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church. He married Oct. 21, 1821, Elizabeth Hughes, who was born in Kanawha, W. Va. She, a daughter of Rev. Edward and Nancy (Foster) Hughes, was a devout and earnest Christian and an able helpmeet to her husband. They devoted their lives to the ministry of the gospel. He died July 7, 1881, in Gallopolis, Ohio; his wife, in Cheshire, Ohio. They were the parents of thirteen children, the four older of whom were born in West Virginia, the next five in Ohio, the tenth in Mercer County, Pa., the eleventh in Tyler County, W. Va., and the two youngest in Ohio.
Lynn, It sounds as if you had a double nice day.... I was more than J to be able to send you information that I hoped you could use. I know how it feels to work on something and have it become your brick wall. I wish you the best of luck. June Fairfax County, Virginia
Dear Listers Could some kind soul (SKS) who knows, please post the children of Caleb Simpson (b. 1801) and Matilda Webster (b. 1806). They were recorded in 1850 in Prince William County. Apparently there were about 16 children in all. Obviously most of them would have left home by 1850. If anyone knows anything further about Matilda Webster, I would be grateful too. Cheers Lynne Simpson Canberra Australia

Does anybody have information on the following family? George JOHNSTON born July 13, 1805 in Prince William Co. married Sarah B. ?? born about March 17, 1799 probably in Prince William Co. Children William b. about 1826 in Prince William Co. David b. about 1831 in Prince William Co. Martha b. about 1834 in Prince William Co. Mary J. b. about 1836 in Prince William Co. Joseph b. about 1839 in Prince William Co. John T. b. 1841 in Prince William Co. I didn't find George JOHNSTON in Turner's PW, VA 1840 Annotated Census when I visited RELIC. I found only George JOHNSON, and unless my notes are wrong he had nobody else was listed under him. Does anybody have an index for the1840 ceusus for Prince William Co? The USGenWeb Census Project shows nobody assigned to trascribe it. This family is in Shenandoah, VA in the 1850 census and in Page Co., VA in the 1860 census. George and Sarah are buried at the Antioch Bible Church, Luray, Page Co., VA. Thanks for looking. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Dane Hall Mitchellville, MD
Dear Norma I have been chasing this family for some time. The Brawner family living at Bull Run were not the owners of the farm, they were tenant farmers. The family were Capt. John C Brawner and his wife Jane Clark. They were married in Westmoreland County 13 January 1827. I have not been able to discover much more about their parents. I have a strong suspicion that this John C fits into my family of John Cornish Brawner, but cannot find any further evidence to support that feeling. Capt John C Brawner applied for compensation to the damage done to his farm during the battle, but was refused since he was not the owner of the land. This is his family, as I have it right now. Descendants of John C Brawner 1 John C Brawner 1798 - 1880 .. +Jane Clark 1806 - 1877 ........ 2 Mary V Brawner 1826 - ........ 2 George W Brawner 1828 - 1868 ............. +Susan Bott 1817 - ................... 3 Mary T Brawner 1858 - ........ 2 Martha C Brawner 1830 - 1860 ............. +Charles B Smith 1825 - ........ 2 Sarah J Brawner 1831 - ............. +Jesse L Rice 1824 - ........ 2 John Brawner 1833 - 1855 ........ 2 James Brawner 1836 - 1865 ............. +Cornelia 1837 - ........ 2 Susan Brawner 1837 - ........ 2 Charles H Brawner 1840 - ............. +Frances Matilda (Brawner) Shepherd 1838 - 1917 ................... 3 George Brawner 1872 - ................... 3 Lloyd Brawner 1875 - ........................ +Ida Athey ................... 3 Henry Brawner 1879 - Fanny Shepherd was the daughter of William Lloyd Brawner and Lucy Ann Webster and sister of my Lucy Ann (Brawner) Clark who married John Thomas Brawner as his second wife (his first wife was Mary Catherine Speake). John Thomas was the son of Henry Brawner and Elizabeth Annis and grandson of John Cornish Brawner. I do not know if William Clark (who married L A B) was related to Jane Clark. It is certain, however, that the John Brawner of Brawners Farm was not the John Brawner who married Nancy Ann Speake. Cheers Lynne Simpson Canberra Australia
Pensions were based on the length of service. I can't remember how many days it was but I think it was about six months. Also, pension law was not enacted until around 1830. So, if the man served less that the time then he wouldn't have qualified and if he died BEFORE the enactment of the law then he would not have be awarded a pension. Thirdly, the man got his pension by appearing in the county/state court where he lived at the time of enactment of the law. If he had moved between the war and the enactment of the law he might not have had the required witnesses for the court. This lack of witnesses would not always prevent him from getting a pension provided he had some documentation of his service. However, most of these guys had no papers to show anything and had to rely on friends and fellow soldiers to verify their service. For exact dates of enactment of the various laws you might want to contact the National Archives or the DAR. I have about a dozen relatives who served in the Rev. and only a couple received a pension even though they served with distinction. In their cases it was because they died before the law was enacted. If you want to verify service the DAR is a very good source as are various state archives. And of course some "Muster Rolls" still exist and are filed at the National Archives in D.C. Continental Troops, equal to "Regular Army" of today, had better record keeping but it still was not perfect. Many regulars served and are listed by states and even have pensions but not official Army records have been preserved. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Norma Thompson" <nthmpsn@concentric.net> To: <VAPWILLI-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, August 27, 2000 5:43 PM Subject: Re: [VAPWILLI-L] Re: The Brawners of Brawner's Farm > I'm not so much concerned with who lived there during the Civil War as > during the Revolutionary War.
