Listers: Does anyone have, or know of, any marriages performed in Prince William Co. by John McPherson? I believe he was a Methodist minister. He married my 3G Aunt (Ann Beckham to Harrison Legg) 9 Dec 1873. He filed the papers 3 Feb 1814 _or_ 18 Feb 1814 in Loudoun Co., the latter according to her pension application. In the application she says he married them in Pr. William Co., at her father's home. Since this Beckham family appears on the 1810 Pr. William census and on the 1820 Loudoun census I am curious as to their location in 1813. I will appreciate any info on John McPherson's marriage activities! Thanks so much.... Lynn I have my ggg grandmother Leticia Lewis born in Fairfax Co. Va. around 1788. The only clue I have is that her parent was Betty Lewis. This was on her death certificate. Hello everyone, This website presents a link that allows one to download the narrative TWENTY YEARS AND SLAVE....... by Austin Steward who was born in Prince William county in 1793 and belonged to a Captain Helm. I've read the first few pages and it gives a vived account of plantation life and describes a few people encountered by young Austin. Steward eventually moved to New York with Helm and became free. He was a businessman and teacher and published this autobiography in 1857. His business proceeds supported Wilberforce, an ex-slave colony of Canada which he eventually joined himself. check out this interesting site: http://docsouth.unc.edu/steward/menu.html rhonda jackson a caution: I have not checked the Pr. Wm. surnames in this narrative--I don't know if Steward was using aliases or not.
Thanks. My Martha L. Brawner's son was born in 1840 appreciate the thought anyway. Dear Charles Isn't it always the way: someone sent me information which included a Martha L Brawner - but I didn't record who it was, or where the info came from. I believe it is Census information, probably from the 1880 Census. Here is what I have: Descendants of James F Brawner JAMES F1 BRAWNER was born Abt. 1820. Notes for JAMES F BRAWNER: The Roster of Confederate Soldiers, 1861-1865, Vol. II, Edited by Janet B Hewett (Broadfoot Publishing Co., Wilmington NC 1995). Fought in Company D, 8th VA Infantry. Children of JAMES F BRAWNER are: i. FANNIE E2 BRAWNER, b. 1845, Loudon County, VA. ii. MARTHA L BRAWNER, b. 1850, Loudon County, VA. iii. JAMES F BRAWNER, b. 1852, Loudon County, VA. iv. ANNE BRAWNER, b. 1858, Loudon County, VA. v. BEVERLY P BRAWNER, b. 1860, Loudon County, VA. NOTE: This group of Brawners do not seem to fit in with my main family of Brawners, so I did not pay too much attention to them. This information needs to be checked if you wish to use it. I live in Australia and most of my research is gleaned second hand from others over the web. Therefore I cannot verify its accuracy. Cheers Lynne Simpson Canberra Australia
To all: I am researching the Harrold, Harrill etc. families of Prince William county. Richard Harrold, Harrill bought 1200 acres of land in Orange Co. Va. abt. 1740 from William Russell.. In this deed it is stated that Richard Harrold, Harrill is "of Prince William county, Va." In 1749 & 1751 Richard Harrold, Harrill etc. made deeds to his six sons, giving them most of the 1200 acres.. I would very much like to know who the father of Richard Harrold was.. I would appreciate any Information, Clues or Discussion.. You may reach me at glh@naxs.com Thank You, G. Lee Hearl Authentic Appalachian Storyteller Abingdon, Va..
Hi Prince William Co., Researchers, I found a reference to MICAH PEYTON, on a Rev War list for Prince William Co. Does anyone on this list know anything about him? Also listed for Prince Wm Co. were John & Valentine Peyton. Does anyone know the relationship of these Peytons. Were John & Valentine brothers, or father and son? They were both Capt. under Col Heth (Heath). I am researching JOHN PEYTON married to a CHARLOTTE, and son MICAJAH PEYTON married to CHRISTINE PEYTON. The family was from Virginia originally, but I haven't been able to confirm where. JoAnn jnothhelfe@home.com
Thanks, the Lewis'and Newmans darn near populated the US starting back in the early 1600s, or so it seems. I have been told our link is thru Meriwether's uncle, of which Col. Nicholas was one, but have not been able to trace the Brawner's back to find the link. Looking for help. I have no dates/info on anyone other Robert L. and his descendents. I am hoping someone will recognize some of the sibling names listed and have searched those lines, ie. In the time frame 1964-1966 a Hutchison lived in Manassas and attended H.S. I once mentioned my parents' interest in family history and that more than one had been in the Revolutionary War and others in the Civil War he stated his was an old VA family and probably was also involved in the same Wars. It is my understanding that some of his family is still in the Manassas area. They may be related in someway to your Hutchison. His spelling may have been different but that doesn't mean it wasn't the same back then. I believe they were from the Gainesville/Haymarket area because as I remember he was a farm boy (?). ----- Original Message ----- From: Charles K. Charles: In a book I have in my possession it indicates that Nicholas Meriwether and Elizagbeth Crawford of New Kent Co., VA had a family of 9 children. Their 2nd child was a daughter named Jane Meriwether who married Col. Robert Lewis of Belvoir. Hope that this is of some help. Bernie in Northern Virginia
Robert Leachman HUTCHISON,1840-1912,CSA vet, told his grandchildren after coming to Orange after the WAR, that he was born on the line between Loudoun and Pr. Wm. counties. His parents; William F.HUTCHISON and Martha LEWIS BRAWNER. He married Helen Garrett ATKINS in Orange Nov. 29, 1870 and had 9 children. Robert L. had 4 siblings I know of. Per tradition the LEWIS name is somehow linked to Meriwether and has been used quite often in the family. But then my mother's was Genevieve FAIRFAX and she was never able to learn where that came from. One of Robert's brother's, Frederick, ended up in WV, and one of his daughter's Elizabeth married a Mate but I have no other record. Another of Frederick's daughter's, May H. Saunders, is supposed to have lived in DC and have "the HUTCHISON bible. Not a lot to go on. I have more sibling names but lack anything else to go on. William F. is listed in the Orange Co census 1860.
