Arrangements by Bower Funeral Home. - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- CARTER, Mamie E., 98, of Pearisburg, departed this life on Saturday, December 16, 2000, at the New River Valley Medical Center after a long illness. She was born December 19, 1902, in Columbia, South Carolina, the daughter of the late Rev. Isom Goodwyn and Selena Benson Goodwyn. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Russell Carter, Sr., and one son, Bernard Carter, six brothers, and two sisters. She was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church, Pearisburg, where she served as the former President of the Missionary Society and former member of the Senior Choir. She was also a member of the Heroines of Jericho York Masons, (Order of the Eastern Star). Mrs. Carter was also a former employee of the Appalachian Power Company. She leaves to cherish her memory one son, Russell (Carmen) Carter, Jr., of San Antonio, Texas; two daughters, Thelma Harris of Columbus, Ohio, and Catherine (Robert) Alexander of Pearisburg; 15 grandchildren, and a host of great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be Thursday, December 21, 2000, at the First Baptist Church Pearisburg with the Rev. Michael Braton officiating. Burial will be at the Birchlawn Cemetery, Pearisburg. The family will receive friends Thursday from 12 noon until 1 p.m., time of service at the church. Penn's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- CECIL, Jason David, (JD), 71, of 3318 Lead Mine Road, Snowville, died Monday morning, December 18, 2000, at his home. He was born November 4, 1929, in Snowville, the son of the late James R. and Bertha Thornton Cecil. He served in the U.S. Army during the occupation of Japan and later in the U.S. Air Force in Texas. After his military service, Mr. Cecil worked for many years for Greyhound of Roanoke while living in Salem. Later he farmed in the Snowville area fulfilling his dream of living and working near his childhood home. He was an avid ourdoorsman and gardener. Mr. Cecil attended the Valley Christian Ministries of Snowville. Surviving are his wife of fifty years, Louise Dunagan Cecil of Snowville; daughter, Debra Cecil Cobb and her husband, Judge W. Allen Cobb, Jr., of Wilmington, N.C.; son, Michael David Cecil of Roanoke; daughter, Linda Cecil Ward and her husband, Dr. John T. Ward of Laurence Harbor, N.J.; three sisters and one brother, Anna Cecil Justice and her husband, Rush of Pulaski, Robert B. Cecil and his wife, Arlene of Christiansburg, Betty Cecil Blankenship of Pulaski, and Brenda Cecil Edmonds and her husband, Roy of Snowville; and he had many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. Born in Giles County on July 15, 1921, she was a daughter of the late Emory R. and Maggie Sue Saunders Songer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roscoe W. Dowdy; a son, W. A. Williams, Jr., a sister, Alberta Cumbee, and a brother, Junior Songer. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Betty Williams of Pearisburg; a daughter and son-in-law, Betty Jo and Robert Reynolds of Pearisburg; a brother, Emmitt Songer of Pearisburg; a sister, Kathleen McCroskey of Pearisburg; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Her husband, Kenneth Clark Phillips, and one brother, Garland Covey, preceded her in death. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Crongie (Phil) and Sandra Counts Phillips of Dublin; two grandchildren, Keith Allen and Linda Phillips of Taylors, S.C., and Karen Sue Phillips of Virginia Beach; two great-grandchildren, Tommy Phillips, and Michelle Phillips, both of Taylors, S.C.; sisters, Kathleen Rutherford of Radford, and Virginia Atkins of Dublin; a special niece, Leona Andrews of Pulaski; a special cousin, Jerry Covey of Dublin; and several other nieces and nephews. Allen, of 1324 Grove Drive, Pulaski, died Saturday night, December 16, 2000, in the Pulaski Community Hospital. She was born on September 3, 1922 in Ivanhoe, Va. and was the daughter of the late Frank Blair Sayers and Emma Manuel Sayers. She was a retired beautician, having owned and operated Glamour Beauty Shoppe for 40 years until her retirement for health reasons. Mrs. White was the widow of George Carter Allen who was owner of Allen Real Estate until his death. She was also preceded in death by a son, James Pierce (J.P.) Allen, her second husband, James Kenneth White, three sisters, Ruth Delp, Cecile Davis and Ovella Jones, and by four brothers, Sidney Sayers, Bill Sayers, Ben Sayers and Harvey Sayers. Mr. White was a past member of Pulaski Business and Professional Womens Club, a member of American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Pulaski, Va., and a member of the Memorial Baptist Church having moved her membership from First Baptist Church when Memorial Baptist Church was organized in 1953. She served in many capacities over the years and was a dedicated, faithful member. Mr. Goodrich was a member of the Ebenezer Lutheran Church, the Marion Rotary Club, the American Library Association, and the Virginia Library Association. He was the Director of the Smyth-Bland Regional Library in Marion. Mr. Goodrich was a graduate of the Presbyterian College and received his Master's Degree in Librarianship from Emory University. He is survived by his wife, Antoinette Roberts Goodrich; his daughters, Eleanor Rhiannon Goodrich; and his son, Alfred Forrest Goodrich, all of Marion; his mother, Sara Goodrich of Wytheville; one sister and brother-in-law, Pat and Jerry Baggett of Oxnard, Calif.; several nieces and nephews, Pat Baggett Parkhill and husband, Charlie, Cindy Baggett, Sara Scott, Jay Baggett, Oscar Roberts, IV, Heather Roberts, Helen Roberts. Seaver-Brown Funeral Service is serving the Goodrich family. - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- MOORE, Fitzhugh C., of Woodport, Hartfield, Va., passed away on Sunday, December 17, 2000, on his 89th birthday. Hugh was one of nine children of Sydney and Blanche Moore and grew up on Oakmoore Farm in Poquoson. He graduated from Virginia Tech in 1933, and served in World War II in the 5th Armored Division under Gen. George Patton. He retired as a reserve Army Colonel in the 1980s. He worked as an Agricultural Extension Agent in Suffolk, then became a principal in York Oil Company in Hampton. Throughout his long years, Hugh was a leader in every community in which he lived. Among his business and community service credentials, he was President of York Oil Company, and served on the Board of Directors of Rappahannock General Hospital, Old Point National Bank, and the old Hampton General Hospital. He was President of the Virginia Petroleum Jobbers Association and also served on committees of the National Oil Jobbers Council. Hugh expressed his faith as a deacon for Harmony Grove Baptist Church. A devoted Shriner for many years, he was a member of the Khedive Shrine Temple and local Tidewater Shrine Club. He was a 45-year member and past Director of the Jesters Norfolk Court 75. Hugh was a die-hard Golden Hokie and avid football fan who rarely missed a game and attended their final game of the 2000 season on November 25th (Tech beat UVA, of course). He was also a charter member of Ut Prosim, served in the Virginia Tech Student Aid Association, Hokie Club, and received the Virginia Tech Distinguished Alumni Award. Hugh married Elsie Marie White of Hampton in 1947. Together they raised two daughters, Nancy Jefferson and Beverly Kay. Losing Nancy when she was a child, he is survived by Beverly Moore Barnhardt and her husband, Jamie; and beloved grandchildren, Jacqueline, Christopher, and Nancy. He is also survived by nieces and nephews for whom he was a pillar of support. As the last surviving male he became the natural patriarch of the Moore family. He was a stern taskmaster who set high expectations, but with a gentle sense of humor. Hugh and Elsie enjoyed travel far and wide, both in the United States and around the globe. He had friends all over the world, maintaining close relationships with families in England and Belgium he met during the war. High never met a stranger. Generous of heart and wonderfully sentimental, he had deep commitment to family and love of country. There is much to be said of Hugh Moore-he will be sorely missed by so many. Sr., 74, of Simi Valley, Calif., and originally from Roanoke, Va., died on Saturday, December 16, 2000, in a Simi Valley, Calif., hospital after a lengthy illness. He is preceded in death by his parents, Eva and D. J. Shelton. He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Theresa and Richard J. Shelton, Jr., of Baltimore, Md., Shannon and James Shelton of Fairfax, Va.; sons, Mark H. Shelton of Roanoke, Va., Stephen Shelton of Fairfax, Va.; daughter, Eva Shelton of Concord, N.C.; stepchildren, Maria and William Riviera of Simi Valley, Calif.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Dot and George Jackman of Falls Church, Va., Helen Jean and Douglas Child of Brodnax, Va.; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Shelton was born in Roanoke, Va., and later moved to Bedford, Va. A World War II veteran, he graduated from Virginia Tech in 1951 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He was employed by numerous companies and was a member of several professional organizations throughout the United States and in several foreign countries in a career that lasted nearly 50 years.
