The Roanoke Times New River Obituaries Published on Friday, December 22, 2000 - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- FLINCHUM, Lela Smith, (Mid), 88, of McCoy, died Wednesday, December 20, 2000, at her home. She was born in Montgomery County, April 1, 1912, to the late Lee and Ella Fagg Smith. She was preceded in death by her first husband, William Rufus Hungate; her second husband, Lee Edward Flinchum; and a son, James Lee Hungate. She is survived by her five daughters, Vickie Carroll of McCoy, Glenna Garwood of Hiwassee, Helen Carroll of Blacksburg, Bessie White of Long Shop, Linda Jenkin of Blacksburg; four sons, Jerry Flinchum of Christiansburg, Michael Flinchum of Salem, John D. Hungate of Blacksburg, William Hungate, Jr. of Long Shop; three sisters, Thelma Farmer of Oraville, Wash., Nora Flinchum of Christiansburg, Janie Simpkins of Pulaski; one brother, Melvin Smith of McCoy; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, December 22, 2000, at 11 a.m. in the Community Christian Church, McCoy with Mr. Bobby E. Fuller and Mr. James O. Flaugher officiating. Interment will follow in the North Fork Baptist Church Cemetery, Ellett. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made tot he Blue Ridge Christian Camp, P.O. Arrangements by Simpson-Tharp Funeral Home & Cremation Center. - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- LESTER, Allia Mae Lester, 83, of Radford, died Wednesday, December 20, 2000 in Carilion New River Valley Medical Center. She was the widow of H. H. (Smoky) Lester. Surviving are a son, Charles W. Lester of Houston, Texas; a sister, Dimple Litton of Maryville, Tenn.; and two grandchildren, William Gordon Lester and Jeffrey Lester. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 23, 2000 at the DeVilbiss Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Eddie Callahan officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, December 22, 2000 at the DeVilbiss Funeral Home, Radford. - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- TEEL, David Wayne, 30, of Christiansburg, died Thursday, December 21, 2000, at his home. He is survived by his parents, Dale D. and Freda W. Teel; a sister and brother-in-law, Sarah and Tony Harris; nephew and niece, Dustin and Paige Harris; also many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Friends may call anytime after 2 p.m. Friday at the Horne Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday evening. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, December 23, 2000, from Christiansburg Church of Christ with Mr. Dennis Curd and Mr. Larry Phillips officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Horne Funeral Service, Christiansburg. - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- VIPPERMAN, Claude Russell, 69, of Radford, was taken home Thursday morning, December 21, 2000 to be with his Lord and Master. Surviving are his wife, Frances Bowers Vipperman, Radford; two brothers, Coy Vipperman, Meadows of Dan and Clinton Vipperman, Martinsville; along with several nieces and nephews. Although he will be missed by his wife, Frances and family as well as friends, we all know that his pain and suffering are over and he is in Heaven in his new body. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 23, 2000 at the Highland Memory Gardens Chapel with Rev. Will Shewey officiating. The family will receive friends from 9 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 23, 2000 at the DeVilbiss Funeral Home, Radford. - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- WEAKLEY, Irene Larrick, 94, of Winchester, died Thursday, December 21, 2000 in a nursing home in Winchester. Mrs. Weakley was born June 9, 1906 in Lehew, W.Va., the daughter of John William Larrick and Rosa Lafollate Larrick. She had been a seamstress for Bell Clothes of Winchester and was a member of Braddock St. United Methodist Church. She married Wesley R. Weakley in October of 1925. Mr. Weakley died in March 1983. Surviving are two daughters, Arlene W. Slaughter of Winchester and Kathleen W. Lemley of Christiansburg; five grandchildren, Bobbie Williams and her husband, Ed of Christiansburg, Jake Lemley of Jacksonville, N.C., Samuel Slaughter of Winchester, Teri Hendel of San Angelo, Texas, Judy Slaughter of Winchester; and three great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held Saturday, December 23, 2000 at 11 a.m. in Shenandoah Memorial Park, Frederick County, Va., with the Rev. John J. Kelchner officiating. Arrangements are being handled by Jones Funeral Home, Winchester. - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- WALKER, Charlotte R., of Phoenixville, Pa., died Wednesday, December 20, 2000, at Manatawny Manor in Pottstown, Pa. She is survived by two sisters, Mozelle R. Dobyns and Winsloe R. Thurman, both of Salem; one brother, Calvin Reynolds of Vinton. She is also survived by 13 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sgt. John Walker; two sisters, Evelyn Jones Hall and Juanita F. Reynolds; four brothers, James Schoolcraft Reynolds, John L. Reynolds, Jr., Randolph D. Reynolds, all of Salem, and Frank Reynolds of Pilot. She graduated from Salem High School and Radford State Teachers College. She also attended Roanoke College. She taught in several Roanoke County elementary schools before moving to Phoenixville, Pa., where she taught first grade at a number of elementary schools. Funeral services will be held in Phoenixville, Pa. Memorials may be sent to Manatawny Manor Assisted Living, P.O.
