Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, December 15, 2000 at the Horne Funeral Chapel with Rev. Don Peters officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Horne Funeral Service. - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- CREASY, Fred Lawrence, of Christiansburg, died Wednesday, December 13, 2000 at New River Valley Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, December 15, 2000, in the Horne Funeral Chapel with Rev. Doug Kanney and Rev. Chuck McHose officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Cemetery. Funeral arrangements by Riffe's Funeral Service, Narrows. - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- GREGORY, William Boyd, 84, of Max Meadows, Va. and formerly of Pulaski, passed away on Thursday, December 14, 2000. Funeral service 7 p.m. on Friday at the Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski. - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- HENDRIX, Lydia Garking, (Dollie), 90, of Radford, died Tuesday, December 12, 2000. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church and a retired sales clerk at Crigler Shoes. Survivors include her son, Ronald S. Hendrix of Raleigh, N.C.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and a special niece, Bette Wright. Memorial services will be held Saturday, December 16, 2000 at 11 a.m. at the Grace Episcopal Church with Father Kris Kramer officiating. Interment will follow in West View Cemetery in Radford. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the charity of your choice. Arrangements by Mullins Funeral Home & Crematory in Radford. - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- HICKS, Charlie Quintoe I, infant, of Blacksburg, died Monday, December 11, 2000 at Montgomery Regional Hospital. Graveside services will be conducted on Friday, December 15, 2000 at 1 p.m. in the Westview Cemetery, Blacksburg, with the Rev. Robin Henrickson officiating. There will be no public visitation. Arrangements by McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg. - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- ALDERMAN, Ennis Friel, 84, of Galax, and lately a resident of Wheatland Retirement Center, passed away Thursday, December 14, 2000 in Twin County Regional Hospital. He was born in Carroll County, Va., on September 18, 1916 to the late Henry and Lucinda Jennings Alderman. Mr. Alderman was in the Air Force and served during World War II. He was a member of the Odd Fellows and the Hillsville VFW Post #1115. He attended National Business College and was a fifty-year member of the First Christian Church in Galax. Mr. Alderman was the widower of Mattokia Durnil Alderman and Arlie Alderman. He is survived by a daughter, Yvonne Alderman of Roanoke, Va.; a sister, Grace Robinson of Galax, Va.; and many loving nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in Vaughan-Guynn Chapel with the Rev. Charles Smythers officiating. Interment will be held in Monta Vista Cemetery with military rites by Hillsville VFW Post #1115. Arrangements by Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home in Galax, Va. - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- SHUMATE, Ellen Burkholder, wife of the late Rev. Alfred R. Shumate of Wytheville, Va., died Wednesday, December 13, 2000 in the Wythe County Community Hospital following a brief illness. She was born February 8, 1904, in Mt. Sidney, Augusta County, Virginia, to Dr. Alexander Joseph and H. Katherine Fauver Burkholder. She attended Mary Baldwin College, and received a BS degree from Radford University. A resident of Wytheville for the past 54 years, she served the public school system as secretary and elementary teacher. After retirement, she taught children in her Jack and Jill Kindergarten. She was preceded in death by one sister and one grandson. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Jim Tucker of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph and Liz Johnson Shumate of Wytheville, Robert and Mildred Cole Shumate of Waynesboro, Va.; nine grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren also survive. The service of celebration will be held in Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Wytheville, Saturday, December 16, 2000 at 11 a.m., with Pastor Steven Ridenhour officiating. The family will receive friends in the church parlor from 10 a.m. until service time. Interment will be in the Thornrose Cemetery, Staunton, Va. at 3:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alfred and Albert Shumate Scholarship Fund, Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, in the care of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 405 W. Main Street, Wytheville, Va. 24382 or Grace Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 478, Rural Retreat, Va. 24368. The Grubb Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- HOLCOMB, Ada Basham, 93, of Salem, passed away Thursday, December 14, 2000 at her home. The daughter of the late Nathan and Grace Correll Basham, she was the widow of David P. Holcomb and was also preceded in death by a sister, Esthma B. Collings. Surviving are a sister, Frances B. Townley of Salem; a niece, Peggy A. Radike and husband, Paul Radike; three great-nieces, Townley Aide Hamilton, Martha and Alexandra Radike, all of Roanoke. She attended schools; Radford University, University of Virginia and Richmond Professional Institute. She began her teaching career in Montgomery County and also taught in Prince William County, Occoquan, and Fairfax County, Herndon, Va. She was retired from the City of Richmond Schools after twenty years. Mrs. Holcomb was a past member of the Colonel William Christian Chapter of the D.A.R., the Hamilton D. Wade Chapter of the U.D.C., Christiansburg, Va., the Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, and a member of Salem Baptist Church. Graveside services Monday, December 18, 2000 at 11 a.m. in Evergreen Burial Park officiated by Pastor Everette Kier of the Salem Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, please make memorials to the Salem Rescue Squad (201 South Broad Street, Salem, Va. 24153).
