    3. New River Obituaries ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- HASTINGS, Laura Anne, 36, of Blacksburg, died Monday, February 5, 2001 at her residence. She was the beloved daughter of Gladeen Aleta Hastings, and sister of Charles W. Hastings, Jr. She is also survived by numerous loving friends and colleagues in the region. An informal service will be held at the Duck Pond Pavilion on the campus of V.P.I. & S.U. at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 24, 2001. A private interment will follow the service. Arrangements by McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- PALMER, Stella Hylton, 82, of Pulaski, died Wednesday, February 21, 2001 in the Pulaski Community Hospital. She was born in Pulaski on July 24, 1918 and was the daughter of the late John F. Hylton and Suzanne Phillips Hylton. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Guthrie J. "Gus" Palmer, Jr., a grandson, Guthrie J. Palmer, IV, two brothers, Rollie Hylton, John Taze Hylton, and a sister, Thelma Roseberry. She was a lifetime member of the Thornspring United Methodist Church. Surviving are sons and daughters-in-law, Guthrie J. "John" Palmer, III and Becky Palmer of Pulaski, James R. "Randy" and Debbie Palmer of Pulaski, Robert W. "Bob" and Faye Palmer of Midlothian; two sisters, Louise H. Robertson of Pulaski, Lalah H. White of Fredericksburg; grandchildren, Terry Craddock of Johnson City, Tenn., Rebecca Palmer of Johnson City, Tenn., Ric Palmer of Pulaski, Cindy Estes of Madison, Va., Christin Cianfroni of Richmond, Susan Kelly-McKenna of Moneta, Doug Farmer of Atlanta, Ga.; seven great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held Friday at 8 p.m. from Stevens Funeral Chapel with Rev. Darlene Marshall officiating. A graveside service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. from Thornspring Cemetery, Pulaski County. The family will receive friends Friday evening from the funeral home from 6 p.m. until the service hour. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that memorials be made to the Thornspring United Methodist Church. Memorial service, 11 a.m. Sunday, First United Methodist Church, Pulaski. Arrangements by Stevens Funeral Home, Pulaski, Va. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- ROSS, Claude Junior, (Sug), 73, of Radford, passed away Wednesday, February 21, 2001 at Montgomery Regional Hospital in Blacksburg. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cleve Kenley and Pearl Mae Ross. Survivors include one son, Cloyed Allen Ross of Radford, Va.; one daughter, Gladys Faye Ross of Trinity, N.C.; one brother, George Ross of Maryland; two sisters, Shirley Ann Hill of Trinity, N.C. and Bridie Ridpath of Kingsport, Md.; one grandson and one great-granddaughter. Graveside services will be held Sunday, February 25, at 10 a.m. at West View Cemetery in Radford with the Rev. Dennis Martin officiating. Interment will follow in the West View Cemetery in Radford. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Saturday at Mullins Funeral Home in Radford. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- WHITLOCK, Roger Lee, 28, of Check, passed away Saturday, February 17, 2001. He will be sadly missed by his family. He is survived by his father, Donny Dale Whitlock, Check; mother and stepfather, Diane Whitlock and Mehmet Toluay, Istanbul, Turkey; brother, Donny Dale Whitlock, Jr., Check; biological father, Roger Robertson; maternal grandparents, Euel W. Hall, Mildred Hall Meeks, both of Rocky Mount; paternal grandmother, Estella Yeatts Whitlock, Floyd; stepsister, Didem Toluay, Istanbul, Turkey; and many aunts and uncles. Funeral services will be held Friday, February 23, 2001 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Gardner Funeral Home, with the Rev. Elinos Alton Whitlock officiating. Interment will follow in Wright Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday after 2 p.m. at Gardner Funeral Home, where the family will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Gardner Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
