He was retired principal of Check Elementary School, an army veteran and a member of Cedar Bluff Masonic Lodge #260 of Cedar Bluff, Va. and Beni Kedem Temple of Charleston, W.Va. He was preceded in death by a brother Russell L. Surbaugh. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Nelson Surbaugh, Check; sons and daughters-in-law, R. Stephen and Mitzi Surbaugh, Virginia Beach, D. Scott and DuAnn Surbaugh, Minneapolis, Minn.; daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly S. and Chester Simpkins, Copper Hill; brother and sister-in-law, Howard and Bertie Surbaugh, Grassy Meadows, W. Va.; sister, Lavetta Douthat, Pearisburg; sister-in-law, Betty Olinger Surbaugh, Ripplemead; seven grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, February 14, 2001 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel, Floyd with Rev. Roy Turpin officiating. Burial will follow in the Restvale Cemetery with military honors by Hillsville V.F.W. Post #1115. Friends may call at the Maberry Funeral Home after 2 p.m. Tuesday where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Masonic services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home by Floyd Masonic Lodge.
