He was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church, a veteran of WWII having served in the U.S. Army, and was a retired employee of Hercules with 33 years of service. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Blanche Hall Carroll; granddaughter, Roxanne Price of Blacksburg; 2 great-grandchildren, Timothy F. Rogers and Breanna L. Price. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 14, 2001 at 2 p.m. at Gethsemane Baptist Church in Radford with Pastor Jerry Gibson officiating. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in Germany. He was preceded in death by his parents Irvin and Lucy Quinn Crum. She was the widow of Joseph W. Hawley and the daughter of the late Arnold H. and Virginia Bibb Whitaker. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Cathy Jean Hawley and a brother, John H. Whitaker. Surviving are two sons, Jody Lee Hawley, Dickensenville, Va. and Freddy William Hawley, Radford; four daughters, Debbie Evon Hawley, Betsy Jeanette Shortts, and Agnes Marie Hawley, Radford, and Carolyn Lynn Hawley, Blacksburg; one brother, Charles A. He was well known in the timber and lumber industry for many years. He was an active member of the Willis United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Helms Hubbard; a grandson, Lyndon Hylton; two brothers, Frank and Luther Hubbard; and two sisters, Anna Mae Burnett and Ruth Hubbard. Mr. Light was a member of Red Oak Grove Church of the Brethren. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, February 14, 2001 at the DeVilbiss Funeral Home, Radford. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- McCARTNEY, Catherine Rose, "Kay", 82, of Chesterfield, (formerly of Blacksburg), passed away Sunday, February 11, 2001 at a Richmond Nursing Home. Born in New Orleans on October 8, 1918. She was attending LSU in 1941 when she married Robert McCartney, was a war bride and then an Army wife until 1971 raising her family and supporting her husband's military career. As the wife of an Army officer who retired as Colonel, she created homes for her family across the United States and the world, from Japan to Atlanta, to Washington, D.C., to Kansas, to Colorado, to Germany, to Baltimore, to many other posts. Resided in Blacksburg from 1971 until 1995, her family's only "hometown", where she was active with St. Mary's Catholic Church. For the last six years, she lived in the Richmond area, where she enjoyed the love and support of her daughter, Cathy Llaneza. Also survived by two sons, Robert McCartney of Denver, Henry McCartney of Rochester; five grandchildren, Shelley and Rob McCartney, Lindsay McCartney and Bret and Amy Llaneza; sister and brother-in-law, Patsy and Daniel Boone of Atlanta; a sister-like cousin, Pat Harold of New Orleans; plus numerous nieces, nephews, and their children. Funeral Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 15, 2001 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Blacksburg with Father James Arsenault officiating. He retired from the Sheriff;s Office of Montgomery County Jail. He was a member of the New Mount Olive Untied Methodist Church. Proceded in death was his brother, Craig Maurice Palmer. Survivors include his wife of nine years, Robyn R. Palmer; four children, Jasmine R. Ramsey, Dayna (Patty) Palmer, Dana (DJ) Odell Palmer, II, Darrien (Craig) Palmer; his father, Odell W. Palmer, Jr; mother, Patricia C. Palmer; and brother, Keith Darnell Palmer; grandparents, Odell and Pauline Palmer; three uncles; five aunts; numerous brother-in-law and sisters-in-law; nieces, nephews, and a host of relatives and friends. Born August 29, 1932, in Newbern, he was the son of the late Thomas Edward Tabor, Jr. and Charlotte Larew Tabor. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ollie Lee Landis Tabor. Mr. Tabor was a member of the Newbern Christian Church, was a beef cattle farmer, and was retired from the Pulaski County Public Service Authority. Surviving are sons and daughter-in-law, James L. Tabor, Jr. , of the home, Dennis K. and Donna Tabor, Newbern; sisters and brother-in-law, Elizabeth T. Payette, Rapidan, Mary T. and Robert Rosebro, Lynchburg; brother and sister-in-law, T.E. Tabor, III and Allene, Hillsville; granddaughters, Rachel Tabor and Kendra Tabor, both of Newbern; a niece and several nephews.
