New River Obituaries ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- BROOKS, Frances Elizabeth, 83, of Pearisburg, suddenly departed this life on Tuesday, February 13, 2001 at Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg. Born in Giles County on May 15, 1917, she was a daughter of the late Cicero and Mary Hardy Summers. She was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church in Pearisburg and later was accepted as a member of First Baptist Church in Pembroke. She leaves to cherish her memory three daughters, Virginia Brooks of Pearisburg, Mary Ramsey and Gladys Anderson, both of Washington, D.C.; two sons, Jay L. Brooks of Radcliffe, Ky. and Roger T. Brooks of Washington, D.C.; one sister, Flossie Summers of Pearisburg; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 1 p.m. in the First Baptist Church in Pembroke with the Pastor, the Rev. James Cooper and Evangelist Jimmy Parks and Pastor Eddie Kendall officiating. Burial will follow in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at the church from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday evening. The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, February 15, at the Pearisburg First United Methodist Church, 1101 Valleyview Drive, with Reverends Charles Lockerby, Dr. Fred Austin, James Hankins, and William St.Clair officiating. She was born in Halifax County, Va. on September 5, 1915 and was the daughter of the late Cleveland and Elizabeth Reeves Russell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first and second husbands, Weldon H. Cook and F. Bruce Hardwick, and a son, William T. (Bill) Cook. She is survived by three grandsons, Rusty Cook, Va. Beach, Rick Cook, Sonny W. Frazier of Narrows; two granddaughters, Kristy A. Cook, Bridget L. Newby, both of Narrows; great-grandchildren, Kandice Frazier, Brittany, Ricky, Billy Cook, Elizabeth, Ryan, Justin Cook, Sidney Fields, Lani Newby, Hailey, Will Frazier. Funeral services will be held Friday, February 16, 2001 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Riffe's Funeral Service, Narrows with Rev. Dr. Don Clements and Rev. Jim Hagy officiating. He was born in Christiansburg, Va. on February 7, 1952. He was preceded in death by his father, Henry "Bill" Goldman Hart and his grandmother, Juanita "Granny" Dangerfield. Rex was an investigator for the Pulaski Public Defenders Office where he received the Phillip M. Sadler Award for Investigator of the Year. He is survived by his wife, Janice Boone Hart of Blacksburg; a son, Forrest Rexford Hart; a daughter, Shannon Elizabeth Hart, both of Christiansburg; his mother, Ann Dangerfield Hart of Christiansburg; two sisters, Pamela H. King of Christiansburg, Francis M. Hart of Bedford; a brother, William Matthew Hart of Christiansburg; an aunt, Elizabeth H. Ferguson of Fairfax; and other aunts, uncles, and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be conducted Monday, February 19, 2001 at 4:20 p.m. in the Blacksburg Baptist Church with Dr. Tommy McDearis officiating. Interment will be private. She was an employee of Sands-Anderson-Marks and Miller Attorneys. Surviving are her husband, Anthony Wayne Lovern, Christiansburg; her father, Robert L. Chewning, Sr.; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Cathy Chewning, Bland, Clifford and Sandy Chewning and Jerry and Carol Chewning, Marion; a half-sister, Mary Jane Sarver; along with several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, February 15, 2001 at the DeVilbiss Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dennis Martin officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Memory Gardens. He also leaves behind a multitude of family and friends who are all at a great loss for losing such a wonderful person with such a great zest for life and laughter.
