New River Obituaries ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- BROWN, J. Carter, of Blacksburg, Va. and Hopkinton, N.H., died in a tractor accident on Monday, May 7, 2001 at a farm near Blacksburg. He was thirteen years old. He was an active member of Concord's South Congregational Church, UCC, where he was a member of this year's confirmation class, the Junior High Youth Group and was a six-year member of the Church Guild. He attended Hopkinton Middle School where he sang in the middle school chorus and was a member of the drama club. Carter was an avid rock climber having climbed in the White Mountains and the Grand Tetons. He played soccer and baseball for HYSA and basketball in the Kearsarge Mountain League. He enjoyed travel with his family. He was predeceased by his grandmother, Elizabeth C. Brown of Blacksburg; his grandfather, Bruce Permenter of Virginia Beach, Va. He is survived by his parents, Bill and Nancy Brown; his sister, Elizabeth of Hopkinton, N.H.; his grandfather, T. Cartmel Brown of Blacksburg; his grandmother, Ina Permenter of Virginia Beach, Va.; six aunts and uncles; numerous cousins and friends. Local arrangements by McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- CONRAD, James Edward, 89, passed away Monday, May 7, 2001 at his home in Radford. He was a member of the Radford Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), having joined at about ten years of age. He served the church as Sunday School Superintendent from 1934-40, as an Elder and Church Treasurer for over 40 years, and as a member of the choir for over 60 years. He was a member for over 50 years, and served as Past Master of VA May Masonic Lodge #38 A.F.&A.M. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service for over 37 years. Jim graduated from Radford High School in 1930 and worked in Blue Front Grocery; he worked from 1931-33 in Jamison Grocery which later became Krogers; in 1934, he worked for Ead's Piggly Wiggly and in 1935 for John Nye Piggly Wiggly; in 1940, he began working for the U.S. Postal Service in the old building and then moved to the new building in 1941 where he continued to work for over 36 years. Survivors include his wife, Selma Godbey Conrad of Radford, whom he married on November 20, 1941; one son and daughter-in-law, Glen Edward and Mary Ann Conrad of Roanoke; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 10, 2001 at 2 p.m. at the Radford Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) with the Rev. Dennis Martin officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- DAVIS, George Alfred Jr., 78, of Blacksburg, died Wednesday, May 9, 2001 at Montgomery Regional Hospital. He was born on November 3, 1922 to the late George Alfred Davis, Sr. and Margaret Nola Jones Davis. He was raised with his four younger brothers in Kensington, Md. between the townhouse and the family farm. He graduated from Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in Maryland and later attended the University of Maryland. He was a Captain in the U.S. Marine Corps from March 31, 1943 until April 2, 1947, serving with Marine Fighter Squadron-321 where he received the Distinguished Flying Cross and a Purple Heart. George was ordained as a minister of Jehovah's Witnesses on June 1, 1947 and was presiding minister from February 8, 1948 until present. In 1949, he graduated from George Washington University School of Pharmacy and became a registered pharmacist in Maryland and the District of Columbia in 1949 and in Virginia in 1976. He was a member of the Bethel Family World Headquarters of Jehovah's Witnesses from March 5, 1951 and October 4, 1952. He was a pioneer evangelist of Jehovah's Witnesses from November 1, 1952 to September 1, 1954. George Davis was a loving husband and father with a quick wit who devoted his mental and physical energies to helping his family and the congregation and his patients at the CVS and Rite-Aid Pharmacy and the community up until the morning of his death. He was known for his ability to make difficult things in the Bible understandable with grace and humor. He loved flying, sailing, and science and current events. Most of all he loved Jehovah God. He is survived by his wife since October 4, 1952, Ann Howard Shaw Davis of Blacksburg; his children, Anita Davis Carwile of Bedford, George Timothy Davis of Accomac, Va. and Lisa Davis Cutts of Quito, Ecuador; two grandchildren, Joel Casey Carwile and Ginger Haley Carwile, both of Bedford; and a brother, David Richard Davis of Edenton, N.C. Interment will be held on Saturday, May 12, 2001 at 2 p.m. in the Monocacy Cemetery, Beallsville, Md. A memorial service will be conducted on Sunday, May 13, 2001 at 7 p.m. in the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses at 807 Givens Lane, Blacksburg. She was born in Beckley , W. Va. on September 12, 1928 to the late Jabez and Lula Fowler Montgomery. She was a graduate of Concord College (Class of 1948), Athens, W. Va., she continued her education at Marshall University and Harvard University extension. She was a longtime resident of Charleston, W. Va., where she taught for many years. A resident of Blacksburg since 1994, she was active in the American Association of University Women. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles L. Forbes in 1985. Mrs. Marsh was a devoted wife and mother. She is survived by her husband, Edwin C. Marsh, Sr., Blacksburg; her daughter and son-in-law, Martha Forbes Marsh and Edwin C.. "Chip" Marsh, Jr., Levelland, Texas; a niece, Rebecca Kenfield, Florida; a nephew, Wayne Morrison of West Virginia. Mrs. Marsh requested that no funeral services be held. He was born in Carroll County, Va. on February 27, 1921 to the late John Wesley and Grace Mae Lawson Southern. He was retired from the Town of Blacksburg and a veteran of WWII serving in the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Ruby Mathena, Louise Kinsley, and Ida Mae Linkous; and two brothers, Eugene Southern and Robert Lee Southern. He is survived by his wife, Juanita Price Southern of Blacksburg; three daughters and sons-in-law, Judy Brusseau of Christiansburg, Darlene and Clarence Vaden of Blacksburg, Wanda and Rob Geske of Magnolia, Texas; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dale and Barbara Southern of Newport, Larry and Betty Southern of Pembroke; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Peggy and Bill Schmidt of Pennsylvania, Katherine and David Hodge of Salem; six brothers and sisters-in-law, Leo and Clara Southern, Freddie and Frances Southern, Allen and Drema Southern, all of Christiansburg, John and Ellen Southern of Radford, Jerry Southern and Earl Southern, both of Pennsylvania; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
