    3. New River Obituaries ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- HATCHER, Ivan Columbus, 82, of Floyd, passed away Thursday, May 31, 2001. Arrangements by Wood Funeral Home. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- HUNGATE, Roy Curtis, 87, of Christiansburg, passed away Wednesday, May 30, 2001 at his home. Born on September 10, 1913 in Christiansburg, Mr. Hungate retired with more than thirty years employment at the Radford Arsenal. He was a lifelong member of Cambria Baptist Church and will be remembered as a kind and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He is survived by his wife of sixty-two years, Helen Hungate; his daughter and son-in-law, Sue Ellen and Dr. James L. Hedrick, Arlington, Va.; two grandsons and granddaughters-in-law, Dr. James L. and Elizabeth Hedrick, II, Pleasanton, Calif., Dr. Jeffery C. and Amy Hedrick, Montvale, N.J.; and three great-grandchildren, James L. Hedrick, III, Preston Hedrick and Taylor Hedrick. Additional survivors include his sister, Ruby Chafin, Radford; sister-in-law, Pauline Hungate, Salem; and brother-in-law, Dan Walters, Independence; nephews and nieces, Jack Chafin, Henry Hungate, Jr., Darrell Hungate, Harold Walters, Kathy Cox, Nancy Phillips, Annette David and Dr. Joyce Graham; and special friend, Versal Austin. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the second floor doctors and nurses at the Montgomery Regional Hospital and to Melba Kozar, Irene McCoy and Dorothy Sexton for their care at the home. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 1, 2001 at Horne Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 2, 2001 at the Cambria Baptist Church with Rev. Allen Welborn officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery. Arrangements by Bower Funeral Chapel. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- MONOSKI, Dorothy Mae, 86, of Blacksburg, died Thursday, May 31, 2001 in the Richfield Nursing Center. She was born April 28, 1915 in Escanaba, Mich. to the late Carl and Tina Anderson Malstrom. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Paul Monoski, Sr.; and a sister, Lorraine Listiene. She is survived by her son, Joseph Paul Monoski, Jr., of Blacksburg; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Pearl Malstrom, of Bethesda, Md.; a brother-in-law, Frank Listiene, of Ashboro, N.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held Friday, June 1, 2001 at 7:30 p.m. in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Don MacNicoll officiating. A graveside service will be held Saturday, June 2, 2001 in Westview Cemetery, Blacksburg. The family will receive friends at 7 p.m. and following the service Friday evening at the McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- STEVENSON, Ferdinan B., (Nancy), 72, died Thursday, May 31, 2001 at her home outside Floyd, Virginia. Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina from 1979-1983, she was the first woman to hold statewide elected office in the state. Before entering politics, she was active in historic preservation and the theatre. She also co-authored several mystery novels with Patricia Robinson. After leaving office, she opened Winston Gallery in Washington, D.C. where she dealt in Contemporary Art. She retired to Floyd, Virginia in 1993, building a house overlooking Little River and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Surviving are four children, David MoltkZ Hansen of Philadelphia, Pa., Ferdinan Dodds of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., Norman Stevenson, Jr. of Camden, S.C. and Josephine Oakley of Greenville, S.C.; brother, William Backer of Virginia; nine grandchildren. Private memorial service is being held in Floyd on Sunday, June 3, 2001, and a memorial service is scheduled at 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 10, 2001, at St. James, Goose Creek Church outside Charleston, S.C. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations go to the American Cancer Society or Carilion Hospice Services, 707 Randolph Street, Suite 251, Radford, Va. 24141. He was a member of Floyd Baptist Church and Floyd Lodge #202, I.O.O.F. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Hattie Dickerson Webb. He is survived by wife, Lilas Higgs Webb, Floyd; two daughters and sons-in-law, Frances and Dorris Helms, Willis, Thelma and George Via, Floyd; stepchildren and spouses, Betty and Gary Crawford, Salem, Maggie and Charles Sutphin, Floyd, Dean and Garad Williams, Canastota, N.Y., Harold and Donna Higgs, Pearisburg; grandchildren and spouses, Melanie and Bill Matthews, Tammy and Darren Worrell, Kim Burchette, Todd and Vicky Via, Mona Helms, ; six great-grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; and five stepgreat-grandchildren; two sisters, Maude Dickerson, Edith Webb, Floyd. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, June 2, 2001 at the Floyd Baptist Church with Rev. Mat Brown and Rev. Alton Griffin officiating. Interment will be in Topeco Cemetery with graveside services by Floyd Lodge #202, I.O.O.F.
