New River Obituaries ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- PRICE, Robert Marshall, 77, of Blacksburg, died Thursday, May 10, 2001 at his home. Bob graduated from Blacksburg High School in 1943 and received his B.S. degree from Virginia Tech in 1951 and his M.Ed. in 1962. He taught vocational education at Blacksburg High School for 33 years, including classes for Diversified Occupations, Distributive Education, Industrial Cooperative Training, the Work Experience Cooperative Education Program, and General Business. After retirement, his interests were his family, his rental business, travel, and his vacation home on Little River. While still in high school, Bob was a member of the Virginia National Guard, Battery G, 246th Coast Artillery, the only National Guard unit in western Virginia at that time. In 1943, shortly after the outbreak of World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was stationed at Deland Air Station in Deland, Florida, before going overseas in 1945 to serve in the Carrier Aircraft Service Unit-48 (Forward Area) located on the South Pacific island of Saipan. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1945 as a Chief Petty Officer, 2nd Class. After his marriage in 1948, Bob was active in both educational and community affairs, serving as a member of the Blacksburg Jaycees, President of the United Fund Campaign in 1969, and as a Town Councilman from 1964-1969. A member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Bob is survived by his wife of 53 years, Cecelia Price; his son and daughter-in-law, Robert M. Price, II and Brenda Price; daughter, Patricia Price; and grandson and wife, James David Price and Kelly Smith-Price. He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter Painter Price and Lottie Roop Price; and a grandson, Michael Shane Price. A memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, May 12, 2001 at 11 a.m. in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Blacksburg. The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those who loved him make donations to the Robert M. Price Vocational Scholarship in care of Blacksburg High School, 520 Patrick Henry Drive, Blacksburg, Va. 24060. The family wishes to thank the physicians and staff of the Cancer Center of New River Valley and Gentle Shepherd Hospice.
