New River Obituaries ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- ALEXANDER, Effie May Phillips, formerly of 3551 Riner Road (Route 8) Christiansburg, Virginia went to be with her Lord on Friday, May 18, 2001, at Pulaski Healthcare Center after a short illness. Born in Floyd County, Virginia (The Indian Valley Community) on September 9, 1908, she was the daughter of Mary Alberta Dickerson and Walter Earl Blaine Phillips. Mrs. Alexander's family moved to Pulaski County (The Snowville Community) in 1918. Mrs. Alexander and her husband, Howard, ran H.I. Alexanders Store on Route 8 near Riner from the mid-40's until 1969 at which time they moved two houses closer to Riner. From 1969 to 1998, travelers enjoyed her well kept lawn and flowers. In 1998, her health required her to move to the Pulaski Retirement Community. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Howard Ingram Alexander; daughter, Theo Alexander Owens; son-in-law, Lonnie Calvin Owens; three sisters, Alma (Jackie) Davidson, Cora Brunella and Kate (Billie) Phillips; two brothers, Ed Phillips and Landon (Phil) Phillips; plus three nephews. She is survived by two sisters, Edith P. Elkins of Pulaski and Ann P. O'Dell of Draper; two brothers, Basil Phillips of Glenn Burnie, Md. and C.B. Phillips of Frederickburg; several nieces and nephews including Pat Viers, Bertie Arrington, Jackie Duncan, Kathy Millirons, Sarah Hawley, Richard Stevens, and their families. Graveside services will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. in the Level Green Cemetery in Craig Co. Visitation will be private. Kendall Funeral Home in Pembroke is in charge of arrangements. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- CONRAD, Samuel Robert Jr., (Bob), 76, of 3688 Conrad Landing Road, Pulaski, Va. died Saturday morning, May 19, 2001, at his home on Claytor Lake, following an extended illness. He was born in Forsyth County, N.C. on January 13, 1925, and was the son of the late Sam R. Conrad and Mamie S. Conrad. He was also preceded in death by one brother, David H. Conrad; and three sisters, Mary Gil Bishop, Elizabeth Leslie, and Anne Wright. Mr. Conrad served in the U.S. Navy during WW II. He attended Coyne Electrical School in Chicago, after which he moved to Pulaski, Va. in April of 1948, where he and his brother, David Conrad, began the operation of Conrad Brothers Boat Docks. The business has been continually operated since that time. Surviving are his wife, Sue R. Conrad, Pulaski; daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Dean Jackson, Pulaski, and Ruth and Mike Ratcliff, Pulaski; son and daughter-in-law, Samuel R. Conrad, III and Lynn Conrad, Max Meadows; five grandchildren, Elizabeth Jackson, Hillary Jackson, Justin Ratcliff, Samuel Ratcliff, IV, and Eli Conrad; sisters, Jane McAnally, Mesquite, Nev. and Dorothy (Peck) Luper, Broomfield, Colo.; many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. from the Stevens Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Gary Rorrer officiating. Burial will follow in Shiloh Cemetery. Visiting will be Sunday evening at Stevens Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. The family requests that expressions of sympathy be made to Shiloh Christian Church Building Fund or Pulaski Daily Bread. He was born February 23, 1929, in Minneapolis, Minn. He is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Lilli Henriksen Hawes of Radford; a daughter and son-in-law, Leslie Elizabeth Hawes Parnell and husband, Kenneth David Parnell, all of Austinville; a sister-in-law, Virginia O. Hawes of Carmel Valley, Calif.; and many loving cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Helen Blakely Hawes and Percival Holterman Hawes of Kansas City, MO; a brother, Peter Blakely Hawes of Carmel Valley, Calif.; and a sister, Janet Hawes Foley of Kansas City, MO. He was an Eagle Scout, and earned his BFA, MA, and Ph.D. at his beloved Alma Matre, The University of Kansas and was awarded a four-year scholarship from the University of Oklahoma in 1946. In 1970, Leo Beuhrman, a film Dr. Hawes narrated, was nominated for the prestigious Oscar of the Academy of Arts and Sciences, and that same year was nominated by the Information Film Producers of America for the best short documentary. Dr. Hawes was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, National Honorary Society, Delta Epsilon, Social Fraternity, American Theater Association, Kansas University 50-year club, and the VPI University Club. In 1976, Dr. Hawes founded the First Nighters Club. He served from 1975 to 1994 as Chariman of The Department of Theater of Radford University and directed over 50 theatrical productions. Van Damme, Mr. William Yerrick, Col. Lewis I. Jefferies, Ret., Prof. Charles L. Hayes, and Carl H. Lefko. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 22, 2001, in Porterfield Theatre at Radford University with the Rev. Curt McKee officiating. A reception will follow immediately in the Flossie Martin Art Gallery. She is survived by her husband of 36 years, John D. Turner; son, John W. Turner, both of Christiansburg; sisters, Linda Weikle, Verna May, both of West Virginia, Allalee Wielkle of Mooresville, N.C.; brothers, Danny and LeeRoy Foster of West Virginia. She is also survived by her beloved dog and cat, Bandit & Tom Tom, as well as many special friends. There will be a memorial service held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 21, 2001, in the Horne Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Bond officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. The family request in lieu of flowers that memorials be made to a church or charity of one's choice.
