New River Obituaries ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- CHARLTON, Richard Monroe, 82, of Narrows, died Saturday, April 28, 2001 at the home of his son and his wife, John and Judy Charlton in Jonesborough, Tenn. He was born in Princeton, W. Va. September 25, 1918 and was the son of the late Emmett and Nell Bevins Charlton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Sarah Jane Benson. He was a retired chemical engineer with the Radford Army Ammunition Plant at Radford, after 33 years of service. He was a graduate of Roanoke College. He loved his church and was a member and Board Chairman of the First United Methodist Church in Narrows, where he taught the Men's Bible Class for 35 years. Richard spent much of his time with his family and enjoyed the outdoors and hunted with his son and friends. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Rosalie Johnson Charlton, Narrows; a son and his wife, John and Judy Charlton, Jonesborough, Tenn.; daughters, Kit C. Benson and her husband Alan of Griffin, Ga., Melissa C. Richardson and her husband, Doug of Narrows; four grandsons, Benjamin Richardson and wife, Laura, Brian Richardson and his wife, Melinda, Christopher Charlton, Calan Charlton; two granddaughters, Amanda Gay and husband, James, Carrie Benson; and three great-grandchildren, Zachary Richardson, Millie Richardson and Kellie Richardson. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 1, 2001 at the First United Methodist Church in Narrows, with the Rev. Wayne Monroe officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Narrows. The family will receive friends at Riffe's Funeral Service, 600 Main St., Narrows, Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church, Narrows, Va. 24124. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- FRENCH, Joyce Burton, 49, of 406 Orchard Drive, Pearisburg, died Friday, April 27, 2001 in the Lewis-Gale Medical Center, Salem. A lifelong resident of Giles County, she was born on February 29, 1952 and was the daughter of the late Allen Mason and Martha Bruce Hale Burton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Hampton Burton in 1960. She is survived by a son, William Allen Burton of Narrows; two daughters, Jo Ellen French of Pearisburg, Shelena Faye Burton of Pearisburg; two brothers, James M. Burton of Danville, William B. Burton of Narrows; three sisters, Elizabeth Faye Conley, Brenda B. Clark, both of Narrows, Mary Sue Carroll of Radford; two grandchildren, Alex Burton and Jacob Burton. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 1, 2001 at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Riffe's Funeral Service in Narrows with the Rev. Tony Robertson officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery on Wolf Creek near Narrows. He was retired from Hercules, Inc. and was an employee of Gregg Protection Service. Survivors include his wife, Betty H. Mills of Radford; five daughters, Cathy Roop of Mt. Airy, N.C., Sherry Gallimore, Debbie Eanes and Tricia Hamilton, all of Radford, Angie Mills of Elliston; four sons, John (Eddie) Mills, Jr., Ronald Mills, Christopher (Chico) Mills, all of Radford, Mike Mills of Dublin; two brothers, Willard H. Mills of Radford, Ronnie G. Mills of Dublin; one sister, Sandra M. Volk of Radford; 17 grandchildren. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, May 1, 2001 at 11 a.m. at the Rockford Cemetery in Radford with the Rev. Woodrow "Butch" Holder officiating. Interment will follow in the Rockford Cemetery. She was born August 14, 1936, the daughter of the late Auther and Nina Linkous and was preceded in death by her sisters, Reba Allen and Corena Linkous, brothers, Troy Linkous, Hasel Linkous and Melvin Linkous. Survivors include her daughters, Sharon Karr and John, Cloressa Lovern and Jerry, Tena Price and Bob, Tammy Cantu and Rene, Sandra Bugg; sons, William Price, Jr., John Price; sister and brother-in-law, Kathleen and Bud Thomas; brother, Stanley Linkous; sisters-in-law, Janie Linkous, Veltie Linkous and Reba Linkous; grandchildren, James, Jerry, Benny, Belinda, Amanda, Miranda, Chris, Natasha, Tim, Rebecca, Randy, Billy Jr., Josh, J.
