New River Obituaries ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- ALLEN, James Matthew Jr., (Jim), 66, of 4829 State Park Road, Dublin, Va., died Saturday morning, May 19, 2001, in the New River Valley Medical Center, Radford, after fighting a courageous battle with cancer. Mr. Allen was born in Lee County on August 14, 1934, and was the son of the late Matthew Allen and Mary O'Roark Allen. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Edward Green and Jack Allen. He was a member of the Mt. View United Methodist Church and was a retired employee of AT&T. Mr. Allen was a veteran having served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict. Survivors include his wife, Betty M. Allen, Dublin; daughters and sons-in-law, Pam Allen and Tom Mattox, Dublin, Susan and Gary Thomas, Dublin; sons and daughters-in-law, Matt and Kym Allen, Dublin, Greg and Kim Allen, Dublin; sisters and brother-in-law, Alice and Jack Spangler, Lebanon, and Virginia Harvey, Fla.; brothers, Joe Allen, Lebanon, and Walter Allen, New York; sisters-in-law and spouses, Dawn Morehead, Dublin, Nancy and Gerald Dunford, Dublin, Lauraetta Roope, Dublin, Diane and Mel Tolbert, Dublin; grandchildren, Kandi Allen, Brandon Allen, Andrea Thomas, Mary Thomas, Adam Allen, and Andrew Allen; many nieces, nephews, and friends. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. from the Mt. View United Methodist Church with the Rev. Donna Hester officiating. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. Visiting will be Monday evening at Stevens Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Arrangements by Stevens Funeral Home, Inc., Pulaski, Va. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- HAWES, Dr. James William, BFA, MA, Ph.D., of Radford, passed from this life on Thursday, May 17, 2001. He was born February 23, 1929, in Minneapolis, Minn. He is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Lilli Henriksen Hawes of Radford; a daughter and son-in-law, Leslie Elizabeth Hawes Parnell and husband, Kenneth David Parnell, all of Austinville; two grandsons, Eric and Anthony; a sister-in-law, Virginia O. Hawes of Carmel Valley, Calif.; and many loving cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Helen Blakely Hawes and Percival Holterman Hawes of Kansas City, MO; a brother, Peter Blakely Hawes of Carmel Valley, Calif.; and a sister, Janet Hawes Foley of Kansas City, MO. He was an Eagle Scout, and earned his BFA, MA, and Ph.D. at his beloved Alma Mater, The University of Kansas and was awarded a four-year scholarship from the University of Oklahoma in 1946. In 1970, Leo Beuhrman, a film Dr. Hawes narrated, was nominated for the prestigious Oscar of the Academy of Arts and Sciences, and that same year was nominated by the Information Film Producers of America for the best short documentary. Dr. Hawes was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, National Honorary Society, Delta Epsilon, Social Fraternity, American Theater Association, Kansas University 50-year club, and the VPI University Club. In 1976, Dr. Hawes founded the First Nighters Club. He served from 1975 to 1994 as Chairman of The Department of Theater of Radford University and directed over 50 theatrical productions. The family request that those who so desire contribute to the charity of their choice. Honorary Pallbearers are Dr. J. William Giesen, Dr. Richard Harshbarger, Prof. Frans W. Van Damme, Mr. William Yerrick, Col. Lewis I. Jefferies, Ret., Prof. Charles L. Hayes, and Carl H. Lefko. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 22, 2001, in Porterfield Theatre at Radford University with the Rev. Curt McKee officiating. A reception will follow immediately in the Flossie Martin Art Gallery. DeVilbiss Funeral Home, Radford, is handling arrangements. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- LUCAS, Lewis C., 90, of Rich Creek, died Sunday, May 20, 2001 at Riverview Nursing Home. A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 22, at the North Fork Cemetery.
