New River Obituaries ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- LUCAS, Maxine French, 71, of Narrows, died Saturday, May 26, 2001 at her residence. A lifelong resident of Giles County, she was born March 23, 1930 and was the daughter of the late John B. and Edna Howard French. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Goldie French Hess, Flossie Shumaker, four brothers, Woodrow French, Russell French, Cecil French and Mason French. She was a member of the Cornerstone Pentecostal Holiness Church in Narrows and was a retired employee of the Celanese Fibers Company Plant in Narrows, after 48 years of service. She is survived by her husband, Raymond H. Lucas, Narrows; two sons, Charles H. Lucas and his wife Jean of Ballard, W.Va., Steven R. Lucas, Narrows; a daughter and her husband, JoAnn and Eddie Mullins, Narrows; a brother, James French, Pittsburg, Penn.; a sister, Dorothy Jean Spar, Reno, Nevada; six grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren and one stepgreat-grandchild. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 29, 2001 at 11 a.m. at the Cornerstone Pentecostal Holiness Church in Narrows, with the Rev. Kimball Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Burchlawn Burial Park, Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at Riffe's Funeral Service in Narrows Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- VIERS, Frances Gilmore, 89, of Radford, departed this life Monday, May 28, 2001 in a Pulaski Health Care Center. She was born March 9, 1912 to the late Benjamin and Pearl Gilmore. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Thomas W. Viers, a son, James E. Viers, and a grandson, James Allen Viers. Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Rudolph (Jack) and Kathleen Viers of Radford; two grandsons and their wives, Kenneth and Cindy Viers, Timothy and Regina Viers of Dublin; granddaughter, Sherry Viers; three great-grandchildren, Drew, Heath, and Sarah Viers; along with a cousin and special friend, Jane Ellen Morris and special friend, Carrie Williams. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 30, 2001 at Sunrise Burial Park with Pastor Jerry Gibson officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, 2001 at the DeVilbiss Funeral Home. Flowers will be appreciated or contributions may be made to a special charity. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- WILSON, Kate Flippin, 52, of Martinsville, died in Lewis Gale Hospital in Salem, Sunday, May 27, 2001. She was the daughter of Ethel Cook Flippin and the late P.G. Flippin of Pulaski. She is survived by her children, Beth and Ben Wilson of Martinsville; her brother, Frank Flippin and his wife, Margie and their children, Sally and Collins of Roanoke; her sister, Margaret Shuler and her husband, Jim of Blacksburg, and their children, Laurel S. Moore and her husband, Declan, and their daughter, Mallory of Washington, D.C., and Marshall Shuler and his wife, Jennifer of Burlington, N.C. Kate is also survived by her friend, Barry Tuttle of Eden, N.C. and his daughter, Emily. Kate was a graduate of Guilford College and earned an M.S. in Guidance from Radford University. She taught fourth grade at Carlisle for a number of years and was currently a guidance counselor at Martinsville High School. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Martinsville and for many years was a member of the choir. The service celebrating her life will be held at the church Tuesday afternoon, May 29, 2001, at 5 p.m. with a reception following.
