    3. New River Obituaries ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- ALMARODE, Bradley Smith, 33, of Pulaski, passed away Thursday, May 3, 2001. Funeral service, 2 p.m. Sunday, Stevens Funeral Chapel, Pulaski, Va. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- BROWN, Elizabeth Cardwell, 81, of Blacksburg, a retired teacher, died in Blacksburg on Friday, May 4, 2001 after a long illness. Mrs. Brown was born in Richmond, the daughter of William H. and Dorothy F. Cardwell. She was educated at the Collegiate School, Hollins College and graduated from Westhampton College at the University of Richmond. She had also done graduate work at Virginia Tech. Mrs. Brown taught biology and physical education in high schools located in Richmond and in Marion. She also taught biology at Marion Junior College. In Blacksburg, she taught the sixth grade at the Gilbert Linkous Elementary School for twelve years. An avid athlete in her youth, Mrs. Brown coached womens high school basketball, and at the junior college level, womens field hockey. She was an active member of Blacksburg Presbyterian Church where she served as a Deacon and was one of the first women to serve as an Elder. She was a member of various committees of the Montgomery Presbytery and the Synod of Virginia. She was also an active member of the P.E.O. Mrs. Brown was predeceased by her sisters, Virginia Cardwell Eldridge of Acton, Massachusetts and Dorothy Cardwell Besenfelder of Richmond. Survivors include her husband, T. Cartmel Brown of Blacksburg; two sons, Thomas C. Brown, Jr. of Alexandria and William C. Brown of Hopkinton, New Hampshire; and four grandchildren. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in her memory to the Blacksburg Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 144, Blacksburg, Va. 24063. A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 7, 2001 at 2 p.m. at the Blacksburg Presbyterian Church with a reception to follow in the Fellowship Hall. Oakey & Son Salem Funeral Home. 389-5441 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- SHELBURNE, Mary Sawyers, 75, of Radford, passed away Friday, May 4, 2001, in Carilion New River Medical Center after a long illness resulting from a brain tumor. She was a graduate of Radford Community Hospital School of Nursing, class of 1947, and worked there as a Registered Nurse for 38 years. After retirement, she worked with her husband on the family farm. Actually, Mary never retired from nursing as she continued to administer family and friends. Surviving is her husband of 53 years, Harvey D. Shelburne; three children, Carolyn J. Shelburne, Charlotte E. Shelburne, and H. Daniel (Dan) Shelburne, Jr., all of Radford; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Claude and Helen Sawyers of Christiansburg, James and Joyce Sawyers of Pound, Va.; two sisters and their husbands, Stella and Lester Nelson of Canton, Ohio and Edith and Joseph DeMarco of Baltimore, Md.; and a large extended family. Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 6, 2001, at the Grove United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday at DeVilbiss Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin. Memorial contributions may be made to the Radford High School Foundation, P.O. Box 2823, Radford, Virginia 24143-2823 to provide a nursing scholarship in memory of Mary S. Shelburne. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Dr. Michael Conatser, the Rev. Warren Stewart, Margaret Shively, Debbie Danieley, and the nurses and staff of the Surgical Care Unit at Carilion New River Medical Center. A special thanks is also extended to the caregivers and other family, friends, and neighbors for their love and concern.
