New River Obituaries ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- CORBETT, John Greenawalt, 94, of Blacksburg, formerly of Clear Spring, Md., died Wednesday, April 11, 2001 at Montgomery Regional Hospital. He was born in Clear Spring, Md., February 28, 1907 to the late Charles Funk and Catharine Greenawalt Corbett. He was a member of St. Michael Lutheran Church, Blacksburg. He was preceded in death by his wife, Madge Newkirk Corbett. Mr. Corbett is survived by his daughter, Barbara A. Corbett, Blacksburg; a sister, Catherine Ardella Corbett, Williamsport, Md.; George Luther Corbett, Lancaster, Penn. A memorial service will be held Monday, April 16, 2001 at 10 a.m. in the St. Michael Lutheran Church, with Pastor Linda Mitchell officiating. A memorial will also be held in St. Peters Lutheran Church, Clear Spring, Md. at a later date. Funeral Saturday, 2 p.m. Stevens Funeral Chapel, Pulaski. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- PATTESON, Carl Baker, 89, of Glen Lyn, died Thursday, April 12, 2001 in the Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital, Pearisburg. He was born in Roanoke County on December 8, 1911 and was the son of the late Samuel A. and Minnie Lee French Patteson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Frances Crittenden Patteson in 1976, three brothers, James W. Patteson, Samuel A. Patteson, Jr., William H. Patteson. At the time of his death, he was serving as Mayor of the Town of Glen Lyn and for the past 60 years, had served in various positions in the town government, including being Town Treasurer and Town Clerk and a member of the Town Council. He helped organize the Glen Lyn Fire Department which had the first fire truck in Giles County. He was a member of Rich Creek United Methodist Church, where he was a former Sunday School teacher. He was a member for 63 years and had served two terms as Master of the Intermont Lodge #269 A.F. &A.M. in Narrows and was a member and had served several terms as Past Patron of Lakeland Chapter #74 O.E.S. in Narrows. He was a member of the Rich Creek Lions Club and was Past Chairman of the Giles County Senior Citizens Center Board. He was past chairman of the New River Advisory Board on Aging. He was a retired engineer at the Appalachian Power Plant at Glen Lyn after 39 years of service. He was a graduate of Roanoke College in 1932, with a degree in Chemistry. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Bowles Patteson, Glen Lyn; a son, Raymond Patteson, Roanoke; three stepsons, Stephen Bowles and his wife, Joyce of Waldorf, Md., Richard Bowles and his wife, Brenda of Pamfret, Md., Glen Bowles of Rich Creek; three daughters, Carlene Blankenship and her husband, Harold of Elliston, Leah Patteson of Richmond, Alinda Parcell and her husband, Jerry of Vinton; two stepdaughters, Barbara White and her husband, Curtis of Peterstown, W.Va., Debbie Huffman of Narrows; two brothers, Andrew Patteson of Houston, Texas, John R. Patteson, Falls Church; two sisters, Margaret Mitchell, Seattle Wash., Mildred Copenhaver, Bristol, Va.; 17 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 14, 2001 at 2 p.m. in the Rich Creek United Methodist Church, Rich Creek, with the Rev. Aubrey Whitlow officiating. Burial will follow in Birchlawn Burial Park, Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at Riffe's Funeral Service in Narrows, Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. A Masonic memorial service will be conducted by Intermont Lodge #269 at the funeral home Friday evening at 7 p.m. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The family wishes to thank the Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital, Pearisburg, it's doctors, nurses and medical staff for their concern and kindness to Mr. Patteson during his illness. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- RECK, Dorothy Carter, 73, of Blacksburg, died Thursday, April 12, 2001. Arrangements by McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- ROUSE, Frank E. Jr., 79, of Christiansburg, passed away suddenly Wednesday, April 11, 2001. He was a retired employee of American Electric Power with forty-two years of service. He was a member of the Cambria Baptist Church where he served as Deacon Emeritus. The son of the late Frank and Grace Rouse, he was also preceded in death by his sisters, Margaret Rouse and Elizabeth (Betty) Shelor. He is survived by his wife, Hazel Rouse; one son, Stephen Rouse, Austin, Texas; and a special grandson, Nathanael Rouse, Lexington, N.C. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 14, at the Cambria Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Allen Welborn with interment to follow in Sunset Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Christiansburg Rescue Squad or the Cambria Baptist Church Building Fund. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday evening at the Horne Funeral Service, Christiansburg. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- STANTON, Howard Burton Jr., 72, of Christiansburg, passed away Thursday, April 12, 2001. He graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and the Medical College of Virginia. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a First Liutenant. Mr. Stanton practiced dentistry in Christiansburg for 38 years, also serving as team dentist for the Virginia Tech Football Team for 20 years. He volunteered with various civic organizations including the C.H.S. Demon Booster, was a past director of the Bank of Christiansburg and past Chairman of the Board of Montgomery County Hospital. Surviving are his wife, Velma Jo Clingenpeel Stanton; a daughter, Emily Woodbury Stanton, Pilot; a son, Howard Burton Stanton, III, Herndon; a brother and sister-in-law, David Robert and Valerie Stanton, Jr., Diane and Dan Tolley and their children, Patrick Clingenpeel; brother-in-law, Glenn Lloyd and Judy Richardson Clingenpeel, Richard Bowman Clingenpeel; his father-in-law, Lloyd M. Clingenpeel. Memorial services will be 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 14, 2001, at the Unity Church of Roanoke Valley, 3300 Green Ridge Rd., Roanoke, VA conducted by the Rev. Diane Scribner-Clevenger.
