New River Obituaries ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- COX, Don Carlos, 90, of the Warm Hearth Village in Blacksburg, died Wednesday, April 18, 2001 at Kroontje Health Care Center. He was born in Floyd County, Va. on August 21, 1910 to the late Luke and Mary Gardner Cox. He was retired from N & W Railroad as a signalman, with 30 years service. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U. S. Navy. He is survived by his wife, Beatrice Alice Cox of Blacksburg; three sisters, Helen Richards, Salem, Edith Laughter, Virginia Beach, Ann Myers, Nellies Ford; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, April 20, 2001 at 11 a.m. in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Stanley Harvey officiating. Entombment will follow in Birchlawn Burial Park, Pearisburg, Va. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 530 East Main St., Suite 200, Richmond, Va. 23219. Arrangements by McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- DOSS, Sarah Elizabeth Effinger, 90, of Blacksburg, died Tuesday, April 17, 2001 at Kroontje Health Care Center. She was born in Blacksburg on October 2, 1910 to the late John Peter and Maggie Nickie Perfater Effinger. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clyde E. Doss and a son, Michael E. Doss. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara L. and Kenneth Clark of Christiansburg, Ellen C. and Carl Dove of Blacksburg; three sons and daughters-in-law, James A. and Shirley Doss, Donald M. and Linda Doss, all of Blacksburg, Larry L. Doss of Christiansburg; a sister-in-law, Mary Effinger; a brother-in-law, Ward Doss, both of Blacksburg; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, April 20, 2001 at 2 p.m. in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Richard Gilbert and Mr. Rader Vaden officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday evening at the McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- HUFF, Ralph Hugh, 79, of Riner, passed away Tuesday, April 17,2001 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was a businessman, farmer and owner of Huff & Huff Excavating. He was a World War II veteran, having served in Company E or 134th Infantry. He served in the battles and campaigns of Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe with the rank of TEC 5. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Matt and Mancie Huff, a brother, Mark Huff and a sister, Elva Dalton. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Otha Mildred Huff, Riner; daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Dean Mannon, Salem; sons and daughters-in-law, David and Darlene Huff, Allen and Kathy Huff, Alfred and Susan Huff, all of Riner; four loved grandchildren, Kerri, Jamie, Marceline and Lindsey Huff; brother and sister-in-law, Guy and Velta Huff, Dugspur; and sister, Hassie Moore, Dugspur. Funeral services will be 11 .am. Friday at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel, Floyd, with the Rev. Philip Ayers and the Rev. Vinton Quesenberry officiating. Burial will follow in Captain George Quesenberry Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Maberry Funeral Home. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- LOVERN, Marion Graham Williams, 73, of Christiansburg, passed away Tuesday, April 17, 2001 at Heritage Hall, after an extended illness. Her husbands, Ervin B. Williams and Ralph B. Lovern, and a son, Charles M. Williams preceded her in death. Surviving are daughters and spouses, Judy and Benny Dudding of Pembroke, Va. and Betty and David Viars of Max Meadows, Va.; sons and spouses, Richard and Lois Williams of Shawsville, Va., Ervin and Becky Williams of Blacksburg, Va., Edward and Bobbie Williams of Christiansburg, Va.; one daughter-in-law, Brenda Williams of Gold Bond, Va. She is also survived by five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Lucy Kirk of Blacksburg, Va., Claudine Turpin and Mildred Blankenship of Shawsville, Va.; also two special friends, Emma Thornton and Joyce Winfield. She was a wonderful Christian woman who deeply loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank the staff at Heritage Hall, and Jennie Lemon, Rev. Tom Oliphant and the other members of the Gentle Shepherd Hospice and Ashley Day for the care and friendship that they gave to Marion. Friends and family may visit at Horne Funeral Home from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 16, 2001. Funeral services will be conducted at the Horne Funeral Chapel on Friday, April 20, 2001, at 11 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Tom Oliphant, with burial to follow at Sunset Cemetery. Arrangements by Horne Funeral Service. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- MYERS, Annie Frances, 82, of Newport, passed away Wednesday morning, April 18, 2001 at the Meadowbrook Nursing Home in Shawsville following a long illness. She was born in Giles County on August 25, 1918 to the late John Harvey Ballard and Addie Jane Ester Rock Myers. She was retired from Virginia Tech with over 17 years of service. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Irene Duncan of New Castle and Bessie Cooper of Narrows, and one brother, Charlie Myers of Newport. She is survived by several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Brenda Porterfield and her husband, Albert of Newport. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. in the Kendall Funeral Chapel in Pembroke with the Reverend Eddie Kendall officiating. Burial will follow in the family cemetery, Mountain Lake Road, Newport.
