New River Obituaries ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- ALBERT, Harry Wayne, 77, of Pearisburg, passed away Monday evening, April 2, 2001 in Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Mr. Albert was born December 18, 1923 and was a son of the late William Harmon Albert and Van Hope Rotenheizer Albert. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, William Curtis Albert and a brother-in-law, Allen David Vest, II. Mr. Albert was an Army veteran of WWII, retired from the U. S . Postal Service, worked at the Cyphers Furniture Co. and was a bus driver for the Giles County School System. Mr. Albert is survived by his wife, Cottie Frances Smith Albert of Pearisburg; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry Wayne and Marilyn Rowe Albert of Pearisburg, Stephen Douglas Albert and Brenda Leigh Schwartz Albert of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; one brother, Francis Louis Albert of McCoy; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Susie Belle Vest of Floyd, John and Mary Nell Pauley of McCoy, Don and Nedra Hope Croy; one sister-in-law, Nola Shelor Albert of Floyd; one brother-and sister-in-law, Willard and Midge Smith of Mechanicsville; four grandsons, Michael Stephen Roberts of Claremont, Calif., Scott Douglas Roberts of Colonial Heights, Christopher Matthew Albert of Charlotte, N.C. and Aaron Thomas Albert of Pearisburg. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, April 5, 2001 at 1 p.m. at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg, with the Rev. Williams Sleasman officiating and burial to follow in the Albert Family Cemetery, McCoy, Va. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening at Givens Funeral Home from 6 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Pearisburg First Christians Church, Fort Branch Road, Pearisburg, Va. 24134. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- BAKER, Jesse Lee, 88, of Radford, passed away Monday, April 2, 2001 at New River Valley Medical Center, following a few months of failing health. He had been a member of the Radford First Pentecostal Holiness Church for 75 years and provided active leadership over the years in various capacities including Bible studies leader, Deacon, board member, building committee member and Trustee. He was also a former active member of the Gideons. He retired from Lynchburg Foundry in 1977 as Maintenance Superintendent after 49 years of service. He served the Radford community in numerous capacities including 32 years on the Radford City School Board. The McHarg, Belle Heth, and Radford High Schools were built during his tenure. He also served on the founding board for the Vocational Technical School and supported its transition to New River Community College. Other community service included over 30 years of service in support of the Military Affiliate Radio System where he was an intermediary in the relay of Armed Forces personnel messages to their families. He was awarded a certificate by former United States President, Richard M. Nixon, for contributions to the Selective Service System. He also served on the First and Merchants Bank Advisory Board and as a member of the local Industrial Development Authority. Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Louise M. Baker of Radford; one son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Robert Baker and Patsy Baker of Raleigh, N.C.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Geneva and Kenneth Harris, and Juanita and Marvin Sutphin, all of Radford; two sisters and brother-in-law, Ava and Harvey Linkous of Radford, and Esther Hopkins of Greensboro, N.C.; two sisters-in-law, Rachel and Lucille Baker of Roanoke; eight grandchildren, Judy Lynn Harris, Rev. Ricky T. Dickens and Kirk Lee Sutphin, all of Radford, Patricia Harris McEachern of Prairie Grove, Ark., Blaine William Sutphin of Franklin, Va., Scot Eden Sutphin of Norwood, N.C., Jason Lee Baker and Brandon Keith Baker, both of Raleigh, N.C.; and ten great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 5, 2001 at 2 p.m. at the Radford Worship Center with Dr. Hal Adams, Rev. Ricky Dickens and Dr. Tony Brescia officiating. Interment will follow in West View Cemetery in Radford. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- CHAPMAN, Nancy Lee, 50, of Blacksburg, died Monday, April 2, 2001 at Kroontje Health Care Center. Nancy was the daughter of the late Ernest and Frances Chapman. She received her B.A. and M.A. from Virginia Tech in the 1970s, and has considered Blacksburg her home since then, having worked at the Virginia Water Resources Research Center, and for the last 16 years in the Department of Forestry, College of Natural Resources, Virginia Tech. Nancy is survived by three brothers, Michael Chapman, Silver Spring, Md., Patrick Chapman, Olympia Washington, John Chapman, Richmond, Ky.; and two sisters, Barbara Conroy, Simsbury, Conn., and Anne Litton, Berea, Ky. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins; and her two loving cats, Ike and Hallah, as well as many friends, who were her lifeline through her illness. Besides her parents, Nancy was also predeceased by her cherished companion and best friend, Grady Pennington. A graveside service will be held at North Fork Baptist Church Cemetery, in Ellett on Saturday, April 7, 2001 at 11 a.m., followed by a celebration of Nancy's life at the Alumni Hall Donaldson Brown Hotel and Conference Center, Va. Tech, Otey Street at 12 noon. She is survived by her husband, Harry Hungate, Floyd; one brother and sister-in-law, Robert Jeffery and Annie Young, Roanoke; two sisters, Dollie Y. Lee, Christiansburg, Minnie Y. Sweeney, Christiansburg; one brother-in-law, James Perdue, Boones Mill; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Gardner Funeral Home, with the Rev. She was a member of the Drapers Valley Pentecostal Holiness Church for many years. She was also a member of the Bob White Blvd. Church of God, Pulaski at the time of her death. Surviving are two sons, Wayne Douglas Doyle, Sanford, Fla., Rev. Wilburn Doyle, Richmond; five stepdaughters, Peggy J. Beckner, Juanita C. Whitt, Darlene K. Hopkins, Ann K. Mink, Doris J. Reynolds; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. from Stevens Funeral Home with Rev. Kenneth Fogus and Rev. Wilburn Doyle officiating. Burial will follow in the Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin. He was born in Layton, Utah on January 12, 1980, the son of David and Kathleen "Katie" (Mooney) Petravage. He graduated from Turners Falls High School in 1998. He was a student at Greenfield Community College in Sunderland, Mass. He is survived by his father and stepmother, David and Beverly (Caron) Petravage of Turners Falls, Mass.; his mother and stepfather, Kathleen "Katie" (Mooney) Stanger and George Stanger of Christiansburg; his paternal grandfather, Walter B. Petravage of Winchester, Va.; two stepbrothers, Matthew C. Specht and Timothy J. Specht, both of Phillipston, Mass.; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. Funeral services will be conducted in Turners Falls, Mass. on Thursday, April 5, 2001 at 9:15 a.m. in the Kostanski Funeral Home followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Czestochowa Church with the Rev. Charles DiMascola officiating. Burial will be in Springdale Cemetery.
