New River Obituaries ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- COOPER, Martha A., of Floyd County, died Friday, April 13, 2001. Arrangements by Oakey's Roanoke Chapel. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- MEADOR, Ronald Jeffrey, (R.J.), 18, of Pearisburg, Va., passed away Wednesday night April 11, 2001, in Carilion Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, Va. Mr. Meador was born on December 24, 1982, in Radford, Va. and was a son of Ronald Meador of Narrows, Va. and Teresa Robertson of Pearisburg, Va. R.J. attended Giles High School and attended both French's Chapel in Dublin, Va. and Rich Creek Methodist Church. R.J. was currently employed by Echo Star in Christiansburg and by his father building houses. R.J. was preceded in death by two great-grandparents, Grace Meador and Reba Martin Kirk. Besides his parents, R.J. is survived by one sister, Lindsay Paige Robertson of Pearisburg; his paternal grandparents, Ronald D. and Shirley Meador of Pearisburg; maternal grandparents, Jack and Linda Martin of Pearisburg; a great-grandmother, Lucille Pippin of Roanoke; several uncles, aunts, cousins, and special cousins Jessica McGraw and Kevin Munsey of Pearisburg. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, April 15, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg with the Rev. Billy Akers and the Rev. Aubrey Whitlow officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at the Givens Funeral Home Saturday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Giles Rescue Squad or the Pearisburg Fire Department. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- RECK, Dorothy Gates Carter, 74, of Blacksburg, passed away Thursday, April 12, 2001. She was born in Radford, Va. on October 9, 1926, a daughter of the late Ray and Eva Gates Carter. She graduated from Radford College in 1948 with a Bachelor of Science in Education. She began a teaching career at Pembroke High School. Her teaching assignments included five years at Dublin High School; four years at St. Thomas More School in Baton Rouge, La.; one year at Grundy, Va.; three years at Plaquemine, La. and two years as principal. After returning to Virginia in 1980, she was active in organizing periodic high school reunions for the Radford High School Class of 1944. She was President of Alpha Sigma Alpha at Radford University and a special friend of Radford High School Class of 1944, serving on a number of class reunion committees. She was also a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Blacksburg. Mrs. Reck is survived by her husband of 50 years, Pietro Reck; a sister, Ann Carter of Charlotte, N.C.; a brother and sister-in-law, Ray S. Carter, Jr. and Judith Carter of Pearisburg; three nieces, Dr. Amabile Milano of Beckley, W.Va., Mary Ann Milano of Sophia, W.Va., Audrey Carter of Simpsonville, S.C.; two nephews, Kenneth Carter of Fountain Inn, S.C., Mark Reck of Crab Orchard, W.Va.; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Antonio A. and Fern Reck of MacArthur, W.Va.; and several great-nieces and nephews. Funeral Mass will be conducted Monday, April 16, 2001 at 11 a.m. in St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father James Arsenault officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin. Jr., 79, of Christiansburg, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, April 11, 2001. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 14, 2001, at the Cambria Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Allen Welborn with interment to follow in Sunset Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to the Christiansburg Rescue Squad or the Cambria Baptist Church Building Fund. Arrangements are being handled by Horne Funeral Service, Christiansburg. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- SNIDER, Glenna Virginia, 72, of 515 Circle Drive in Pembroke, died Friday morning, April 13, 2001, at her home after a long illness. Born in Giles County on August 26, 1928, she was a daughter of the late Willie and Mae Hilton Brumfield. She was a member of the Pembroke Church of God and was preceded in death by her husband, Mason F. Snider; a daughter, Diane Snider; and a granddaughter, Stephanie Snider. Surviving are six sons, Gary Snider of Pulaski, Mason Junior Snider of Pembroke, Roger Snider of Modoc, S.C., Randall Snider of Pembroke, Michael Snider of Radford, Bobby Snider of Pearisburg; two daughters, Dreama Ratcliffe and Melinda Merrix, both of Pembroke; nine grandchildren; two sisters, Beulah Sanders of Pembroke and Rowena Burton of Pearisburg. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 3 p.m. in the Kendall Funeral Home at 605 Snidow St. in Pembroke with the Rev. Dennis Moore and the Rev. James Walker officiating. Burial will follow in the Fillinger Cemetery at Pembroke. The family will receive friends Saturday at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- STANTON, Howard Burton Jr., 72, of Christiansburg, passed away Thursday, April 12, 2001. He graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and the Medical College of Virginia. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a First Lieutenant. Mr. Stanton practiced dentistry in Christiansburg for thirty-eight years, also serving as team dentist for the Virginia Tech Football Team for twenty years. He volunteered with various civic organizations including the C.H.S. Demon Booster, was a past Director of the Bank of Christiansburg and past Chairman of the Board of Montgomery County Hospital. Surviving are his wife, Velma Jo Clingenpeel Stanton; a daughter, Emily Woodbury Stanton, Pilot, Va.; a son, Howard Burton Stanton, III, Herndon, Va.; a brother and sister-in-law, David Robert and Mercedes D. Stanton; nieces and nephews, Susan and Lee Osborne, David Robert, Jr. and Valerie Stanton, Diane and Dan Tolley and their children, Patrick Clingenpeel; brother-in-law, Glenn Lloyd and Judy Richardson Clingenpeel, Richard Bowman Clingenpeel; his father-in-law, Lloyd M. Clingenpeel. Memorial services will be 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 14, 2001, at the Unity Church of Roanoke Valley, 3300 Green Ridge Rd., Roanoke, Va., conducted by the Rev. Diane Scribner-Clevenger. Arrangements by Horne Funeral Service, Christiansburg. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- WILSON-NICELY, Naomi Pearl, 64, of Radford, died Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at Montgomery Regional Hospital. She was born in Houstonia, Mo. on June 24, 1936, to the late Franklin West and Beulah Mae Dailey Thompson. Naomi was the manager of the War Memorial Chapel at Virginia Tech for over 25 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Leon Nicely; and a son, Patrick Allen Wilson. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Angela Faith and Daniel Binford; two grandchildren, Nathan Binford and Erin Michael Binford, all of Charlotte, N.C.; a sister, Elsie Leaden, Washington; and two brothers, Mac Thompson and John Thompson, both of Bluefield, W.Va. Also surviving are an extended family and numerous friends. A celebration of life service will be held Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at 11 a.m. in the Virginia Tech Memorial Chapel.
