She was a devoted member of Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Gilbert Howell and a brother, Charlie Alley. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Duncans Chapel Cemetery with the Rev. Roy Turpin officiating. Funeral 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Kendall Funeral Home at Pembroke. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- REED, Michael D., 57, of Rich Creek, died Friday, April 6, 2001 at his home following a short illness. Born December 27, 1943 at Glen Lyn, Va., he was the son of Edra L. Hare Reed of Rich Creek and the late Hugh E. Reed. Michael was a former employee of the Radford Arsenal, Radford. In addition to his mother, he is survived by two brothers, Tony L. Reed of Princeton, W.Va. and Stewart R. Reed of Blacksburg; and two sisters, Nedra Reed Atwood and Susan E. Reed, both of Rich Creek. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Monday, April 9, 2001 at the Peterstown Cemetery with Faron Franklin officiating. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday, April 8, 2001 at the Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home in Peterstown, W.Va. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- SHANK, Evelyn Light, 97, the widow of Tonsa Shank, died Friday, April 6, 2001, at the home of a grandson in Simpsons. She was born October 18, 1903, in Simpsons, Floyd County, a daughter of Brownlow and Ardella Prillaman Light. Her father was a teacher in the early public schools in Locust Grove District and later postmaster at Simpsons. In 1923, she married Tonsa Shank, whose home was a few miles from Simpsons. The couple lived in Columbus, Ohio, Roanoke, and Simpsons before settling in 1948 at Mr. Shank's homeplace. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1978 and by brothers Binford, Julian, and Harris Light; sister, Corinne Light McNeil; and grandson, Larry M. Kesler. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Sadie L. and Charles Benn, Alexandria; son and daughter-in-law, David and Phyllis Whitlock Shank, Arlington and Check; sister, Christine Vest, Simpsons; brother, Ralph E. Light, Rochester, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Rodney L. Kesler, Simpsons, Eric I. Shank, Arlington, Jennifer E. Monma, Honolulu, Hawaii, and John T. Shank, Scottsdale, Ariz.; and four great-grandchildren, Matthew Kesler, Tanya Kesler, James Shank, and Daichi Monma. Graveside services will be at Sherwood Memorial Park, Salem, on Monday, April 9, 2001 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Lane Spiegener officiating. The family will receive friends on Saturday and Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wood Funeral Home, Floyd. Arrangements by Wood Funeral Home, Floyd. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- WEBB, Irene Jones, 84, of Pearisburg, died Saturday, April 7, 2001 in Blacksburg, Va. after a long illness. Born in Siluria, Ala. on July 8, 1916 she was a daughter of the late Milton and Lula Lee Jones. She was a beloved mother and homemaker and had worked as a bookkeeper for Farm Bureau Insurance Co. She was a member of the Pearisburg Presbyterian Church and was preceded in death by her husband, John E. Webb. Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, George Edward and Pam Webb of Abingdon; two daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Curtis Shields of Blacksburg, Ella and the Rev. Walter Alvis Martin of Dublin, Ga.; two grandchildren, Charles Martin and "Doug" Walter Martin. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, April 9, 2001 at 11 a.m. in the Pearisburg Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Morton White officiating. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. in Evergreen Burial Park in Roanoke. The family will receive friends at the Kendall Funeral Home at 605 Snidow St. in Pembroke Sunday evening from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that contributions be made to the Pearisburg Presbyterian Church at 114 Easley St. in Pearisburg. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- WOMACK, Alvin, 60, of Christiansburg, died Saturday, April 7, 2001.
