New River Obituaries ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- BRUMFIELD, Reuben Jacob Jr., (Junior), 67, of Christiansburg, Va., went to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 5, 2001. He was born April 24, 1933, the son of the late Reuben Jacob, Sr. and Louvenie Craighead Brumfield of Montgomery County. Five brothers, Steven, Morris, Trigg, Carl and Harvey, as well as two sisters, Callie and Roxie, also preceded him in death. He was a well-known farmer all his life in Christiansburg and was a member of the Blacksburg Pentecostal Holiness Church. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Gillespie May Brumfield; one stepson and his wife, Troy Allen May and wife, Devenia, Beckley, W.Va.; one stepdaughter, Crystal Whited, Big Sandy, W.Va.; two stepgrandchildren, David and Kimberly May, Beckley, W.Va.; a brother, George Brumfield and wife, Lois, Richmond, Va.; two sisters, Minnie Hall, Salem, Va., Maude Eblin, Lynchburg, Va.; four sisters-in-law, Irene Brumfield, Christiansburg, Va., Norma Jean Brumfield, Mineral, Va., Shirley Hall and Carol Arrant, Big Sandy, W.Va.; one brother-in-law, Robert Gillespie and wife, Jeannie, Imlay City, Mich.; a host of nieces and nephews as well as many friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, April 8, 2001, at the Horne Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Robert Lee Smith with burial to follow in Sunset Cemetery. Those preferring to make memorials are asked to please consider the Pentecostal Holiness Church, 600 Warren and Center Streets, Blacksburg, Va. 24060. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Saturday at the Horne Funeral Service, Christiansburg. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- LEMLEY, Kathleen Jane Weakley, 74, of Christiansburg, passed away Thursday, April 5, 2001 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital after an extended stay due to a head trauma from a fall. Her father and mother, Wesley R. and Irene L. Weakley, a special aunt, Letha Larrick, and a precious grandchild, Melanie Lemley preceded her in death. She is survived by a sister, Arlene Slaughter of Winchester, Va.; a son, John (Jake) Lemley of Jacksonville, N.C.; a daughter, Barbara (Bobbie) Williams and her husband, Edward Lee Williams (a very special son-in-law) of Christiansburg; a special granddaughter, Michelle Lemley and special grandson, Michael Lemley, both of Maysville, N.C. Also two nieces and husband, nephew and his wife; and a grand-niece; and two very special high school and lifelong friends, Gilda Lemley and Hazel Mason of Winchester. She also leaves behind her beloved white cat, Miss Kitty. She was a wonderful mother to her two children and beloved son-in-law, and she deeply loved her grandchildren and Miss Kitty. Visitation for family and friends will be held at Horne Funeral Service in Christiansburg, Va. on Saturday, April 7, 2001 from 2 until 4 and 6 until 8 p.m. She will then be taken to Jones Funeral Home, Winchester, Va. for visitation to be held 6 until 8 p.m. Sunday evening for family and friends there. Services will be conducted inside the mausoleum at Shenandoah Memorial Park, Winchester, at 10 a.m. Monday, April 9, 2001, with Rev. John J. Kelchner officiating. In lieu of flowers, Kathleen requested memorials be made to the American Heart Association. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- SADLER, Nellie Sue Merrix, (Tootsie), 65, of Pearisburg, passed away Thursday night, April 5, 2001. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, April 8, 2001, 2 p.m. at the Givens Funeral Home, Pearisburg. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- SHANK, Evelyn Light, 97, the widow of Tonsa Shank, died Friday, April 6, 2001, at the home of a grandson in Simpsons. She was born October 18, 1903, in Simpsons, Floyd County, a daughter of Brownlow and Ardella Prillaman Light. Her father was a teacher in the early public schools in Locust Grove District and later postmaster at Simpsons. In 1923, she married Tonsa Shank, whose home was a few miles from Simpsons. The couple lived in Columbus, Ohio, Roanoke, and Simpsons before settling in 1948 at Mr. Shank's homeplace. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1978 and by brothers Binford, Julian, and Harris Light; sister, Corinne Light McNeil; and grandson, Larry M. Kesler. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Sadie L. and Charles Benn, Alexandria; son and daughter-in-law, David and Phyllis Whitlock Shank, Arlington and Check; sister, Christine Vest, Simpsons; brother, Ralph E. Light, Rochester, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Rodney L. Kesler, Simpsons, Eric I. Shank, Arlington, Jennifer E. Monma, Honolulu, Hawaii, and John T. Shank, Scottsdale, Ariz.; and four great-grandchildren, Matthew Kesler, Tanya Kesler, James Shank, and Daichi Monma. Graveside services will be at Sherwood Memorial Park, Salem, on Monday, April 9, 2001 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Lane Spiegener officiating. The family will receive friends on Saturday and Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wood Funeral Home, Floyd. Arrangements by Wood Funeral Home, Floyd. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- THOMPSON, Lottie Elizabeth, 85, of Christiansburg, passed away Thursday, April 5, 2001 at Montgomery Regional Hospital. A graveside memorial service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, April 7, 2001, in Sunset Cemetery conducted by Rev. Richard H. Horne. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 2024, Christiansburg, Va. 24068. Arrangements are being handled by Horne Funeral Service, Christiansburg.
