New River Obituaries ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- FORD, Gillett Garner Jr., 40, of Blacksburg, entered eternal life on Tuesday, April 3, 2001. Memorial service 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Christian Grove Center Church, Christiansburg. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christian Grove Center Church for the Nehemiah Project, P.O. Box 2312, Christiansburg, Va. 24073. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- HYPES, Ira Nelson, 57, of 403 Rocky Sink Road, Newport, died suddenly Saturday afternoon, April 7, 2001 having just enjoyed a round of golf with his friends at Castle Rock Golf Course in Pembroke. Born on October 15, 1943 at Newport, Va. he was the son of Kathleen Furrow Hypes of Newport and the late Ira Spencer Hypes. Nelson was a purchasing agent for CMT Sporting Goods where he had been employed for over 30 years. He was preceded in death by a sister, Eleanor Ballengee. He is survived by his wife, Janice Porterfield Hypes; a son, Jimmy Hypes of Newport; his mother, Kathleen Furrow Hypes; his brother-in-law, Chuck Ballengee of Blacksburg; and a special niece, Annette Ballengee of Morehead City, N.C. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Kendall Funeral Home at 605 Snidow Street in Pembroke with the Rev. James Belcher and the Rev. Eddie Kendall officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens at Christiansburg. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- PHILLIPS, Opie Jane, 84, of Christiansburg, passed away Saturday, April 7, 2001 at Montgomery Regional Hospital. She was a member of Valley View Primitive Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ertie F. Phillips; a son, Rollie Clarence Phillips; a great-granddaughter, Melanie Lynn Jones; her father and mother, Perry and Arizona Phillips; two brothers, Clyde and Lawrence Phillips. She is survived by two daughters and son-in-law, Sylvia P. and Alva McPeak of Woolwine, Margaret P. Hamilton of Salem; one brother and wife, Oden M. and Diane Phillips of Hampton; three sisters, Lillie P. Lester of Vinton, Carrie P. Lester of Roanoke, Goldie L. Phillips of Louisville, Ky.; one daughter-in-law, Jo Ann Phillips of Riner; seven grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Maberry Funeral Home, Floyd with Elder Raymond Goad officiating. Burial will be in Jacksonville Cemetery, Floyd. Arrangements by Mullins Funeral Home in Radford. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- WOMACK, Alvin, (Leroy), 60, of Christiansburg, died Saturday, April 7, 2001. Leroy was employed by the Town of Christiansburg. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Dorothy Womack; two brothers, Ed and Clyde Womack; one sister, Gladys Roberts. He is survived by his wife, Inna Virginia Womack; sons and daughter-in-law, Carl Womack, Lloyd and Barbara Womack; seven grandchildren, Brandy, Randall, Jennifer, Ashley, Codie, Joshua, and Kassidy Womack; one great-grandchild, Jimmi Lee Rose, all of Shawsville. He is also survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Dale and Diane Womack of Blacksburg; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Leroy McDaniel of Shawsville, Shirley and Jerry Thompson of Riner; several nieces, nephews, and many special, special friends. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 9, 2001 at Horne Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, 2001 in the Horne Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Buck Yopp officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Cemetery, Christiansburg.
