This is really confusing. Read the following obit of a Martha Sutherland ...her husband was Buel Sutherland. Mrs.MARTHA SUTHERLAND Mrs MARTHA SUTHERLAND, 84, of LASHMEET, WV, died Tuesday August 22, 1972 in Bluefield hospital following a long illness. She was born in WYTHE COUNTY, VA daughter of the late JAMES and ELSIE JAMES EDWARDS. She was a member of the Methodist Church at Gilliam. She was preceded in death by her husband, BUEL SUTHERLAND. Survivors include two daughters MRS. MARY STONE of PORTSMOUTH, VA. and MRS. MAYMIE RATCLIFF of ALEXANDRIA, VA. five sons, CHARLIE SUTHERLAND of PORTSMOUTH, VA., MACK SUTHERLAND of LASMEET, WV, ERNEST SUTHERLAND of BASSETT, VA., DAN SUTHERLAND of RICHMOND, VA., and GARLAND SUTHERLAND of ALEXANDRIA, VA. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. at BAILEY FUNERAL HOME CHAPEL in PRINCETON and burial will follow in Sutherland Cemetery in PARROTT, VA. On Marthas marriage license to Buel Sutherland she is listed as MARTHA TIPTON her father as JAMES...no mother listed. I know that her brothers had the last name of TIPTON. MARTHA is my great grandfathers sister. In my grandparents bible it states that CHARLES ELBERT TIPTONS ( my great grandfather ) mother, JEANNIE EDWARDS, married JAMES TIPTON. She had 3 children when she marries JAMES TIPTON but the names cannot be read. My brick wall is that did they change their last name to TIPTON or did Jeannie Edwards marry another man named JAMES but with the last name of TIPTON??? And why did her marriage license say MARTHA TIPTON and not MARTHA EDWARDS as listed in her obit??? I know that most of the children were born in the Wythe County, Va/ Pulaski County, Va. area.
