New River Obituaries ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- BISHOP, Josephine Hall, of Radford, passed away on Sunday, July 1, 2001. She was born in Fincastle, April 16, 1912, to the late Paris McClung Hall and Ollie Booze Hall. She was a 1930 graduate of Lewis-Gale Registered Nurses School in Roanoke. She was preceded in death by her husband, Norris Clinton Bishop, Sr. of Radford. She will be missed greatly by her family and friends from the Methodist Retirement Home and Heritage Hall where she passed on, restfully at peace, Sunday. Her family survivors include her children, Dolores B. Thornton and son-in-law, Walter Thornton of Radford, Dena Josephine Gill and son-in-law, Capt. Carter T. Gill of Blue Ridge, Norris Clinton Bishop, Jr. and Carol Lee Bishop of Clifton Forge; one sister, Edna Kobaly of Fieldale; six grandchildren, Kathryn T. and spouse, Bob McCanna of Madison Heights, Cindi Thomas of Charlottesville and T.J. Davis, Angela T. Jones and spouse, Barry Jones of Bethlehem, New Hampshire, David Clinton Gill and Tara Melanie Gill of Blue Ridge, Eric Clinton Bishop of Varnville, South Carolina; six great-grandchildren, Bryan Leonard and Robby Raymond McCanna, Amelia Berlin and Olivia Paris Davis, Preston Gale and Franconia Josephine Jones; and nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends Thursday, July 5 from 1 until 2 p.m. at Grove United Methodist Church where a celebration of Josephine's life will follow at 2:30 p.m. The family will proceed to Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin for a graveside service. Arrangements by Mullins Funeral Home in Radford. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- BOYD, Dewey Henry Jr., 75, of Radford, passed away Tuesday, July 3, 2001 at his home. He retired from Burlington Industries after 39 1 / 2 years service in 1988. He served his country in World War II with Patton's Third Army, Fifth Infantry Division, and was decorated with the Bronze Star. Combat included the Battle of the Bulge. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dewey and Mattie Boyd; three sisters, Ellen Gravley, Georgia Lawrence and Ruby Tinley; and one brother, Otis Boyd. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Maleita S. Boyd, Radford; one daughter and son-in-law, Patsy B. and Dr. Robert Baker, Raleigh, N.C.; a son and daughter-in-law, Randy J. and Melanie Boyd, Radford; two brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Lula Boyd, Radford, Clyde and Betty Boyd, Baltimore, Md.; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Shirley and Charles Spencer, and Pauline Lazarek, all of Baltimore, Md.; and his very best friend, Elwood Smart, who was there for him every day. Three grandsons, Jason and Brandon Baker, Raleigh, N.C., and Justin Boyd, Radford also survive. The family wishes to give special thanks to Gentle Shepherd Hospice, friends, family and neighbors for their support. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, July 6, 2001 at the Fairlawn Baptist Church with Rev. Danny Collins and Rev. Tom Oliphant officiating. Interment will be in Highland Memory Gardens. Post #776 will conduct military graveside services. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- BRUMFIELD, Barbara Frazier, 61, of Narrows, departed this earth to dwell eternally with her heavenly father on Monday, July 2, 2001 after losing her hard fought battle with cancer. She was a daughter of the late Thomas H. and Wanda Cunningham Frazier. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Brumfield; a sister, Ouida M. Lucas; and two brothers, Tommy Jr. and Donald Edward Frazier. She was an active and devoted member of Woodland Street Baptist Church in Narrows. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Renee and Tim Meredith of Narrows, Tina and Shawn Saladiner of Monroe, N.C.; two precious granddaughters, Samantha Meredith and Somer Saladiner; one brother and sister-in-law, Doug and Judy Frazier of Rich Creek; five nieces; one nephew; and best friend, Carolyn Smith; and her very special friends from church who had been so faithful to her. Graveside services will be conducted Friday, July 6, 2001, at 11 a.m. in Fairview Cemetery at Narrows with Pastor Stanley Harvey and Pastor Eddie Kendall officiating. Her husband, Namon E. Cox and her parents, Edwin and Martha Graham, preceded her in death. Barbara is survived by two sons, Kent Cox and Roy Cox; a daughter, Veronica Altizer, all of Christiansburg; nine grandchildren; four brothers, Homer Graham, Rocky Mount, Va., Paul Graham, Wirtz, Va., Wendell Graham, Riner and Neal Graham of Richmond, Va.; sisters, Bonnie Hawks, Christiansburg, Va. and Beatrice Belcher, Floyd, Va. She was born in Thessalia, Giles County on December 24, 1901 to the late Aubrey and Clara Robertson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Saville, Sr.; a son, Robert Saville, Jr.; a son-in-law, Obie Mullins; sisters, Edith and Gladys Robertson, Dorothy Stafford; brothers-in-law, Joe Stafford, Bill Robertson; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
