New River Obituaries ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- CREECH, Ruth Stafford, 79, of Pearisburg, passed away Monday morning, June 11, 2001 at Meadowbrook Nursing Home in Shawsville, Va. Mrs. Creech was born August 12, 1921 in Pearisburg, Va. and was a daughter of the late Warren P. and Roxie Johnston Stafford. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Alvin Creech, Jr. Mrs. Creech was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg, Va. She is survived by two sons, Robert A. Creech of Chicago, Ill. and Stephen P. and Cherry Creech of Virginia Beach; one sister, Frances M. Stafford of Christiansburg and one sister-in-law, Stella Stafford of Salem. Graveside funeral services will be conducted Thursday, June 14, 2001 at 2 p.m. at the Birchlawn Burial Park, with the Rev. Charles W. Lockerby officiating. There will be no public visitation. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 13, 2001, in the Horne Funeral Chapel with Dr. Glenn Griffin officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by Horne Funeral Service in Christiansburg. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- SIMMONS, Charlie Jackson, 71, of Pulaski, passed away Monday, June 11, 2001. Memorial service 2 p.m. Thursday at Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- VEST, James Jackson, (Jack), 91, of Dublin, died Monday, June 11, 2001 at New River Valley Medical Center. He was born July 5, 1905 at White Gate, Va. the son of the late John Covington and Julia Thompson Vest. He was also preceded in death by his wives, Willie Peery Vest and Mary Gillespie Hetherington Vest; a daughter, Barbara V. Johnson; a brother, Luther Powell Vest; a half sister, Lucille Buchanan. He was a member of the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, the White Gate Ruritan Club, was retired from Radford Army Ammunition Plant, and was a life long farmer. He was a wonderful father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by two daughters and son-in-law, Dorothy Louise Vest of Marion, Judy and Otis Feaganes of Staunton; a stepson, John Hetherington and wife, Donna, of Lexington, Tenn.; two stepdaughters, Rev. Jo Ellen Hetherington of Roanoke, Vicki Hetherington of Salem; two brothers, John C. Vest, Jr. of Pembroke, Ross M. Vest of White Gate; five sisters, Wilma V. Blackburn of Cloverdale, Mildred V. Stafford, Sadie V. White, and Mary V. Mustard of Pearisburg, Josephine V. Melvin of Mechanicsburg; four grandchildren and spouses, James (Jim) and Robin Feaganes, Michael and Lisa Feaganes, Terri and Steve Carter, Patrick Feaganes. Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, White Gate with the Rev. Richard Patterson, the Rev. John Hamric, and the Rev. John Sullivan officiating. Burial in the Stinson Cemetery, White Gate. Visiting will be Wednesday at the funeral home after 4 p.m. and the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the White Gate Ruritan Club. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- WOODY, Bessie May McCain, 96, of Christiansburg, died Monday, June 11, 2001 in Wheatland Retirement Community. She was born in Montgomery, Ala. She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert Francis Woody. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert F. "Bob" and Garnett Woody of Christiansburg; daughter, Betty Jeanne Holloway of Sumner, Wash. She is also survived by six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 13, 2001 in the Horne Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Martha L. Spigener and Dr. Charles Stone officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. A private interment will be held in the Olive Branch Cemetery, Portsmouth, Va. The family requests in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the Christiansburg Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 176, Christiansburg, Va. 24068.
