He was a member of the Twin Community Volunteer Fire Department. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Rye East. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Terry Slaughter, Belspring; two sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Lynn East, Belspring, and Matthew and Cassandra East, Parrott; two brothers, Freddie and Randall East, both of Princeton, W.Va.; three sisters, Joyce Stacy, Mataoka, W.Va., Rosa Lee Holder, Westfield, N.C., and Betty Lou Buckles, Bluefield, Va. Born May 10, 1924, a daughter of Walter Earl Baine and Mary Alberta Dickerson Phillips. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Douglas Silvers Elkins, daughter-in-law, Lita A. Elkins; son-in-law, Jim Viers, Sr.; sisters, Alma "Jackie" Davidson, Cora Brunella, Billie Phillips, Effie Alexander; brothers, Landon "Phil" Phillips and Ed Phillips. Moore in Martinsville. Patty was born December 11, 1955, in Radford, Virginia. She was preceded in death in 1982 by her husband, David Huron. She is survived by her parents; by her brother and family, Stephen, Lisa and Genevieve Moore of Wytheville, Virginia; by her sister and family, Carolyn Moore, Megan Elizabeth, and Virginia Whitehead of Morehead, Kentucky; and by many friends. Patty graduated from Natural Bridge High School, attended Virginia Tech for two years, and worked for a number of years in the Virginia Tech Photo Lab. From childhood, Patty loved horses, and over the past six years she had worked to realize her dream of establishing Horse Ridge Farm as a special, caring place for raising, training, boarding, and riding horses. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, June 28, 2001, at 4 p.m. in the Presbyterian Church of Floyd, conducted by the Rev. Mary Reed of Morehead, Kentucky.
