    3. New River Obituaries ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- ALDERMAN, Dale Edison, 83, of Christiansburg, died Sunday, June 3, 2001 at his home. Mr. Alderman served his country in the Army during WW II and spent his life as a plastering contractor. Mr. Alderman was a devoted husband and father. He is survived by his wife, Maisie Alderman; three daughters, Linda A. Cox of Christiansburg, David and Dinah Rengel of Brooklyn, N.Y., Glenn and Deborah Maynard, all of Christiansburg; and one sister Lola Tuck of Hartford, Ohio. Mr. Alderman is also survived by four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren that he cherished. Dale will be remembered by his loving and caring smile and by helping anyone in need. Friends may call anytime after 12 noon Monday, June 4, 2001 at Horne Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday evening. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, in the Horne Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Pete duPlessis officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery. Horne Funeral Service in Christiansburg is handling arrangements. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- BALDWIN, Vernon LeRoy, died Saturday, June 2, 2001. He was born on December 24, 1911. He is survived by his wife, Lois, of 61 years; one son, LeRoy and his wife, Emmelyn; and one granddaughter, Emily. Vern was preceded in death by his parents, Grant and Etta Baldwin; one sister, Lavilla; two brothers, Emory and Victor; two daughters, Alice Ann and Lavilla. In 1927 Vern received one of two National 4-H leadership awards presented to him at the Chicago Club Congress by Cyrus B. McCormick, Jr. Vern graduated from the University of Minnesota with a B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in animal science. He taught high school at Hawley Minnesota for three years. He became an agricultural extension agent in 1940, after seven years he accepted a sabbatical leave to complete his Ph.D. Vern came to V.P.I. in 1955 and retired in 1973. Vern accepted an assignment with the American Embassy as a consultant in Jamaica, W.I. He was assigned to Quito Ecuador as a consultant for I E S C (International Executive Service Corp.). Vern also lectured at the University of Australia, Brisbane Campus, the University of London, Wye Campus, Kent Co., England. Since retirement Vern has written a very pertinent book "Basic Genetics and Genetic Therapy Opportunities" from the Genome Project of the U.S. National Institute of Health, now ready to published. Vern's second book is one-third finished, it will not be completed. Vern was a dear friend to so many and will be remembered very lovingly by all who knew him. Vern helped to get the great senior center started. He was a Rotarian, Torch Club Member, as well as, N.A.R.F.E., A.A.R.P. Vern was a man who made a difference. He was a veteran of World War II. Surviving are a daughter, Linda Boothe, Radford; a son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Peggy Boothe, Radford; a grandson, Shane Wheeler; and numerous nieces and nephews. Arrangements by Givens Funeral Home, Pearisburg. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- HEINLINE, Guy L., 76, of Christiansburg, died late Saturday night, June 2, 2001 at the V A Medical Center in Salem. Mr. Heinline was a WWII veteran, a member of the C01 143rd 1 NF 36 Infantry Division of Texas. He served in the battle of Naples-Foggia and was P.O.W. by the German Army for two years. He received the Purple Heart, G0142 HQAG & SFPS MB F / A 45, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal. He retired as a Sergeant from the Christiansburg Police Department in 1986. Me. Heinline was preceded in death by his parents, James Drew and Iris Heinline, two brothers, Bud and Archie Heinline and three sisters, Frances Mustard, Kitty Davis and Janie Brim, and his loving wife of 51 years, Juliette Reed Heinline. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Becky H. and Jerry Richardson of Elk Creek; one son and daughter-in-law, Gary D. and Bonnie E. Heinline of Christiansburg; four sisters, Toosey Munsey, Mary Walker, Martha Owells, all of Radford, Betty Beattie of Elk Creek. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Dale Scott Duncan, Jerry Bart Heinline and Jessica Lee Heinline and three great-grandchildren, Dylan Scott Duncan, Morgan Juliette Duncan and Alayna Nicole Heinline, all of Christiansburg and several nieces and nephews. He was born in Newbern on October 31, 1921, and was the son of the late John S. Hurst and Vergie Lee Chinault Hurst. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Ann Aijian. He was a veteran having served in WW II in the US Army. Surviving are his wife, Betty Harrell Hurst of Dublin; daughter, Tanya Hurst of Dublin; sister, Leta Moore of Salem; brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Betty Hurst of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. from Stevens Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Richard Patterson officiating. Burial will follow in the Dublin Cemetery. He was born in Montgomery County, Va. on October 31, 1921 to the late Bose Lloyd and Ella Mae Davis Morehead. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Julia Pauline "Polly" Morehead. Lloyd was a decorated veteran of WWII, receiving the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. Lloyd was retired from Hercules, Inc. with many years of service and had been very active in the McCoy Community with Boy Scouts, Ball Park and Community Christian Church. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, L. Terry and Wanda B. Morehead; a grandson, L. Keith Morehead, all of McCoy; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Almeta A. McCoy of McCoy, Ray T. "Tommy" and Harriett McCoy of McCoy, Lois Morehead of Blacksburg and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, June 6, 2001 at 2 p.m. in the Community Christian Church with Mr. James O. Flaugher officiating. Arrangements by Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- THOMAS, Max S., 92, of Floyd, passed away peacefully at his home Friday afternoon June 1, 2001. He attended the College of William and Mary and graduated from Roanoke College. He taught school for 29 years, twice receiving the Science Teacher of the Year Award by the Virginia Academy of Science in 1962 and 1972. He had also been a farmer all his life. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Jean and Dick Schaeffer of Floyd, Janet and John Coiner of Lynchburg; three grandchildren, Ann Schaeffer and her husband, John Ashenfelter, Jennifer Schaeffer and Rob Coiner. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Wood Funeral Home, Floyd. Interment will be at Harvestwood Cemetery with a graveside service by Rev. J.C. He was born in Montgomery County, Va. on January 5, 1940 to the late Fred Harvey and Annie Lea Dickerson Thompson. He is survived by a son, Tony Thompson of Blacksburg; one grandson, Joshua Thompson; six sisters, Frances Long of Blacksburg, Reba Surface of Christiansburg, Geradine Keebaver of Florida, Jenny Brumfield of Christiansburg, Barbara Samworth of New Jersey, Ann Yopp of Christiansburg; one brother, Harvey Oliver of Christiansburg; special friend and nurse, Susan Williams; and numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be conducted Tuesday, June 5, 2001 at 2 p.m. in the Harless Cemetery, Longshop, with the Rev. John Woolwine officiating. There will be no public visitation. B., (Nat), 88, of Roanoke, entered peacefully into the presence of the Lord on Sunday, June 3, 2001, surrounded by his loving family. An ordained Bishop in the Church of God of Prophecy, Cleveland, Tenn., he pastored for over 43 years in the following; Radford, Galax, Markham, Patrick Springs, Glade Springs, Piney Grove, Coeburn, Suffork, Covington and Pulaski. He served as District Overseer in several of these areas. Along with his loving wife, He was very active in Youth Camp Ministries. He held a very special place in his heart for young people. It was his special joy to seek out those who were in need. A fitting motto for him would be, "find a need and fill it; find a hurt and heal it". He was predeceased by his parents, William and Mary Hale, two daughters, Beulah H. Jones and Lois H. Hines, son, William Hale, granddaughter, Karen Sue Miller, three brothers and a sister and sons-in-law, Harold Hines, the Rev. E. W. Atkins, Jr. and Ray Rash. "Our husband, Dad and grandfather was a wonderful family man and leaves for each of us a wonderful legacy and rich heritage", which will be carried on by his loving, devoted wife of 68 years, Virginia Payne Hale; daughters, Mary H. Rash, Peggy H. Atkins, both of Roanoke, Ruth Robinette and her husband, Allen of Winchester; a son-in-law, W. T. Jones of Suffork; ten grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; also a sister, Lois VanDeusen of Jupiter, Fla. and numerous nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank Drs. Jeffrey Todd, Michael Koch and Jesse Davidson as well as the eighth floor nursing staff at CRMH for their wonderful care. A Celebration of the life of the Rev. M. B. Hale will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, 2001 from Harvest Ministries Church of God of Prophecy, U. S. 460 East, Roanoke. Bishop Fred Fisher, Bishop J. E. Brisson, Pastor Tim Coalter, Rev. L. W. Carter and Rev. Milton Atkins, a grandson, will officiate. His earthly resting place will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens until the Resurrection Day, when the trumpet of the Lord sounds. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Oakey's North Chapel. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- SISSON, Truman Alanmore, 89, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, June 2, 2001 in a Salem hospital. Born June 6, 1911, he was raised in the Wheatland Community of Botetourt County and was a graduate of Fincastle High School, where he was president of his Junior and Senior classes. Truman was the youngest of nine brothers who were a winning baseball team, and three sisters. He was a son of the late John Hayden and Cora Jane Miles Sisson, who owned the Sisson General Store in Simpsons, Va. before the family moved to Wheatland in 1909. His mother taught Sunday School at Wheatland Lutheran Church for 25 years and his father farmed his land. Truman was a grandson of Captain Robert Edward Miles of Montgomery County, who fought for the Confederacy and knew Robert E. Lee personally. He was also a grandson of David Sloan Sisson of Floyd, who served with the Virginia Infantry. A member of the Civilian Conservation Corps, he worked in the New Castle area during the Depression. Mr. Sisson was a long standing member of Christ Lutheran Church, where he was a Scout Master during his son's tenure as a Boy Scout. He was an avid croquet, bowler and golfer. Mr. Sisson was a supervisor for Garst Brothers Dairy and retired as the Credit Manager of Pet Dairy after which he hosted for ten years at Oakey's North Chapel. He was a long standing member of the Masons and Scottish Rite Bodies. Truman was predeceased by his wife Effie Warren Sisson, sons, Benjamin Clark Sisson and Stephen Alanmore Sisson, granddaughter, Jennifer Beth Hollingsworth and eleven brothers and sisters. Surviving are a daughter, Bethanyanne Sisson Hollingsworth and a son-in-law, David S. Hollingsworth; a grandson, D. Samuel Hollingsworth, Jr., all of Roanoke; granddaughters, Lauren Hollingsworth Holtz of Rhode Island, Elizabeth Hope Hollingsworth of Roanoke, Stephanie Sisson Huskins and Martha Gayle Sisson of Chattanooga, Tenn.; and seven great-grandchildren; and his brother, Raymond T. Sisson of Charlottesville; last but not least, his devoted friend, Virginia Cassell of Roanoke. Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 6, 2001 from Oakey's North Chapel. The Rev. Dr. William E. Kinser will officiate. Interment will be in Sherwood Memorial Park.
