New River Obituaries ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- BISHOP, Louise Swaim, formerly of Pearisburg, passed away on Saturday, June 30, 2001 at her Pulaski home, after a long illness. She spent many faithful and active years as a member of the First United Methodist Church of Pearisburg. More recently, she was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Pulaski. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Halsey Bishop; daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Terry Maultsby of Raleigh; son and daughter-in-law, Don and Margaret Bishop of Salem; son and daughter-in-Law, Alan and Penny Bishop of Danville; grandsons; Paul and Andy Phlegar of Atlanta, Keith and Kevin Bishop of Salem, Bradly and Jeffry Bishop of Danville; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Monday July 2, 2001 at 11 a.m. at Thomas M. Seagle & Sons Funeral Home with Dr. Randy Frye and Dr. Fred Austin officiating. Burial will follow in the West View Cemetery in Radford. Visiting will be anytime Sunday after 12 noon at Thomas M. He was a retired blacksmith at Lynchburg Foundry with 34 years service. Survivors include his wife, Phyllis B. Brookman of Christiansburg; two sons, William Blair Brookman of Atlanta, Ga. and John Kevin Brookman of Radford; a daughter, Tracy Lynn Brookman of Radford; a sister, Martha Sink of Blacksburg; a brother, Allen Eugene "Buddy" Brookman of Shawsville. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, July 3, 2001 at 11 a.m. in Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin, with the Rev. Bobby Sutphin officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Christiansburg Fire & Rescue Department. Mr. Meadows was born on April 9, 1933 in Norcross, Va. and was a son of the late George Meadows, Sr. and Mary Morris Meadows Sadler. Mr. Meadows was retired from Mechanical Services at Virginia Tech. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Lee Dowdy. Mr. Meadows is survived by his wife, Alva Robertson Meadows of Pearisburg; a son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Vicki Meadows of Pembroke; one granddaughter, Amanda Meadows; and family friend, Marie Lewis of Pearisburg. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, July 2, 2001 at 11 a.m. at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg with the Rev. Eddie Kendall officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- MIDKIFF, Lucas Dillon, infant son of Marshall Darin Midkiff and Brandy Rena McCroskey of Pearisburg, died at birth in Carilion New River Valley Medical Center on Friday, June 29, 2001. In addition to his parents, he is survived by paternal grandparents, Maebelle Muncy and Newton Jr. Midkiff of Staffordsville; maternal grandparents, Rena Meredith and Ray Simpkins, Jr. of Pembroke and the late Lee McCroskey; maternal great-grandparents, Mary Helen Williams and Robert Meredith of Pembroke. Graveside services will be conducted Sunday at 3 p.m. in the Williams Cemetery on Sinking Creek near Hoges Chapel with the Rev. Barbara Wilson officiating. Kendall Funeral Home in Pembroke is in charge of arrangements. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- MORAN, Eileen Faye Linkous, 61, of Blacksburg, died Friday, June 29, 2001 in Montgomery Regional Hospital. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Ida Linkous. She is survived by her husband, Shirley R. Moran of Blacksburg; one sister, Shirley L. Brunty of Chadsworth, Ga.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Bernard and Norma Linkous, Marlin and Pat Linkous, all of Blacksburg; mother-in-law, Essie Moran of Floyd. She is also survived by three nieces, five nephews, four great-nieces, and one great-nephew, and a special friend, Maxine Cook. Friends may call anytime after 12 noon Sunday, July 1, 2001, at the Horne Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday evening. There will be a graveside service held in the Linkous Family cemetery in Merrimac Monday, July 2, 2001 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. John Early, the Rev. Jube Burk, and the Rev. Jerry Sloss officiating. Arrangements are being handled by Horne Funeral Service in Christiansburg. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- SWEENEY, Daisy Margaret Ellen, 95, of Floyd, joined her Saviour in Heaven on Thursday, June 28, 2001, where she was also reunited with her loving husband, Oscar Sweeney, Sr.; and two grandchildren, Ward Shortt and Mark Sweeney. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Margie and Roger Shortt of Floyd; and her son and daughter-in-law, Oscar Jr. and Mary Nell Sweeney of Christiansburg. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Richard Shortt and wife, Betsy, James Shortt and wife, Grace, Ann Margaret Shortt and husband, George Slusher, and Phillip Sweeney and wife, Linda; great-grandchildren, Scott Shortt, David Shortt, Samuel Shortt, Jonathan Shortt, Reuben Slusher, Anastasia Sweeney, Axel Sweeney, Brandon Sweeney, and Bradley Sweeney; great-great-grandson, Bradley Cameron Sweeney. Daisy is also survived by a sister, Weda Layman of Roanoke. She will also be remembered by those lives she so lovingly touched while in their youth, including Gertha Aldridge of Vinton and Nell Blankenship of Roanoke; and her special nieces, Madeline Shortt and Audrey Poff. Daisy was a charter member of Little River Baptist Church in Floyd, where she served in many capacities, including Adult Sunday School Teacher and Treasurer. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, July 1, 2001, at 3 p.m. in the Little River Baptist Church, Route 221, Floyd, by the Rev. Berlin Joyce and the Rev. David Johnson. Burial will be in Jacksonville Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Wood Funeral Home on Saturday, June 30, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. Donations may be made to Little River Baptist Church Fellowship Hall Building Fund. He retired as a meat inspector with 31 years of service with the Virginia Department of Agriculture. He is survived by his loving wife, Florence Dunn Teichler; two daughters, Suzanne Teichler of the home and Marichen Sheppard of Smith Mountain Lake; two granddaughters, Natascha Edwards and Chelsea Marichen Sheppard; one brother, Alfred Teichler, Jr. and wife, Marjorie, of Annandale, Virginia; two sisters, Diney Huber and husband, David, of Greensboro, N.C., Betty Burrows and husband, Howard, of Roanoke; several nieces and nephews.
