New River Obituaries ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- COX, Simon Jackson, 65, of Shawsville, passed away Saturday, June 23, 2001. He was a former employee of Roanoke Electric Steel and had many fond memories of his association with his fellow co-workers. He loved to hunt and fish and it was a pleasure to fellowship with his friends, for he felt as they were also his family. Surviving are his wife, Ann M. Cox of Shawsville; a son and four daughters and their spouses, Elizabeth Ann and Eddie Lawson of Shawsville, Linda Darnell Hilton of Blacksburg, Dwayne and Stephanie Cox of Shawsville, Missy R. Gardner of Roanoke, Samantha Anne Cox, at home; a stepdaughter, Vivian and Randy Poff of Troutville; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren; one stepgrandson, Todd Lawson; one god-son, Bryan Shane Ferrell; two brothers and two sisters and their spouses, Alton and Blanche Cox of Christiansburg, Lois and Kent Hylton of Floyd, Joyce and Billy Quesenberry of Willis, Billy Cox of Willis; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services 2 p.m. Thursday at Wood Funeral Home in Floyd, with the Rev. Roy Turpin officiating. Interment in Ambrose Cox Memorial Cemetery, Willis. Friends may call anytime Thursday at Wood Funeral Home, where the family will be from 7 to 9 p.m. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- GUYNN, William Earl, 86, of Rich Creek, died Wednesday morning, June 27, 2001, in the Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital, Pearisburg. He was born in Summers County, W.Va. on March 25, 1915, and was the son of the late William Joseph and Anna Ethel Harvey Guynn. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Myrtle Caldwell Guynn; and a daughter, Susie Guynn Blankenship; four brothers, Bobby, Paul, Carl, Dave Guynn; two sisters, Blanch Guynn and Ruby Miller. He was a graduate of Narrows High School, and was a former employee of the Virginian Power Plant at Narrows and had served as a Deputy Sheriff for the Giles County Sheriff's Department. He was a former town manager for the Town of Rich Creek and was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Rich Creek. Mr. Guynn had volunteered as a chaperone for many 7TH grade Richmond trips at the Narrows Elementary / Middle School and was called "Uncle Earl" by many. He was a member of and past patron of Lakeland Chapter #74 O.E.S. of Narrows, and was a 63-year member of Intermont Lodge #269 A.F. & A.M. having previously received his 50-year pin. At the time of his death, he was an active member of the Rich Creek Lions Club, for 27 years, having been named a Melvin Jones Fellow for Dedicated Humanitarian Service. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Area. He was a member of the American Legion Post #68 of Narrows. He was a member of the Giles County A.A.R.P. where he was a volunteer at the Riverview Nursing Home, and for his service there, he received a special citation for Outstanding Service to the Community. He was a very active supporter of the Boy Scouts of America. He is survived by a daughter and her husband, Jean and Steve Montgomery, Rich Creek; five brothers, Joe and Helen Guynn, Cotton (Frank) and Mary Ellen Guynn, Don and Mary Jane Guynn, all of Narrows, Myron and Mabel Guynn, Merrell and Peggy Guynn, both of Rich Creek; sisters-in-law, Emily Guynn, Rich Creek, and Sarah Guynn, Rock Hill, S.C.; a son-in-law, Roger Blankenship, Winfield, W.Va.; grandchildren, Tanya and Mark Smith, Terri and Barry Thomas, Martica and Jimmy Dillon, Michelle Hancock; nine great-grandchildren, Steven and Alex Smith, Tyler, Lauren, Caleb Thomas, Kaylee and Dustin Dillon, and Sydney and Tate Hancock. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 29, 2001, at 11 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church, Rich Creek, with the Rev. Aubrey Whitlow officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunrise Memorial Gardens, Rich Creek, with graveside rites conducted by the American Legion Post #68, V.F.W. Post #6000, both of Narrows and American Legion Post #311, Pembroke. The family will receive friends at Riffe's Funeral Service in Narrows on Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. and at the church Friday morning two hours prior to services. A Masonic memorial service will be held by Intermont Lodge #269 on Thursday evening at 7 p.m. in Riffe's Funeral Service, Narrows. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- HANCOCK, Allen Woodrow, 84, of Blacksburg, formerly of Richmond, passed away Tuesday, June 26, 2001 at his home. He was born in Richmond, Va. February 10, 1917 to the late Frank and Elizabeth Hughes Hancock. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Army. He retired from Dupont, Inc. after 51 years service. While with Dupont, he served for 30 years as Secretary of the Employee Credit Union. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Virginia; son and daughter-in-law, Allen W., II and Elsa Hancock, Media, Penn.; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Randy Crockett, Blacksburg; a sister, Doris Mae Hancock (Lt. Cmdr. U.S. Navy, Retired), Richmond; and three beloved cats, Cuddles, Friskie and Dixie. Funeral services will beheld Friday, June 29, 2001 at 3 p.m. in the Centennial Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), McCoy, with the Rev. Gordon Lee officiating. She was born in Montgomery County, Va. February 11, 1921 to the late James Robert and Rose Sheppard Linkous. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Maxine and Homer Vaught of Christiansburg, Geneva and Benton Moye of Rich Creek; two sons and daughter-in-law, James "Buckie" and Jeanette Surface of Radford, Ricky and Karen Pearman of Christiansburg; a brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Lenora Linkous of Christiansburg; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, June 29, 2001 at 11 a.m. in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Everette Shepherd officiating. Interment will follow in the Linkous Family Cemetery, Coal Hollow. She was preceded in death by her six brothers and sisters. She is survived by her husband Stanley L. Rodgers, Jr.; her son and daughter-in-law Beale and Janet Rodgers of Radford, Va; one grandson, Shannon Rodgers of Christiansburg, Va.; three stepgrandchildren, Michael B. Cox, Jr., Caroline Hickam, and John M. Cox; four step-great-grandchildren, Madeline Hickam, Liam Hickam, Mikayla Cox, and Meagan Cox; numerous nieces and nephews; and a very special friend, Rose Bussey of Salem, Va. She resided in Suffolk, Va. for many years before moving to Richfield Retirement Center. She was a longtime member of the Suffolk Christian Church. The family will receive friends at Harrell Funeral Home in Suffolk, Va. between 7 and 8 p.m. Thursday, June 28. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 29 at 11 a.m. at the Harrell Funeral Home.
