Arrangements by Givens Funeral Home, Pearisburg. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- HATCHER, Ivan Columbus, 82, of Floyd, passed away Thursday, May 31, 2001, at Montgomery Regional Hospital. He had been a resident of English Manor in Christiansburg for the past several years. He was a World War II veteran of the European Campaign, having served under General George S. Patton in the 4th Armoured Division as a tank commander. He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal, Good Conduct, and other ribbons. He was a life long resident of Floyd County and a firm believer in soil conservation, being one of the first farmers in Floyd County to use strip cropping and crop rotation. He served as an assistant agriculture teacher at Check High School before becoming president of Hatcher & Hall Dairies, Inc. He helped found Select Sires, and was on the Board of Directors of Maryland and Virginia Dairy Association. He was also a member of Floyd V.F.W. Post #7854. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vera Pauline Sisson Hatcher. Surviving are his children and their spouses, Larry and Barbara Hatcher of Floyd, Neal and Debbie Hatcher of Greensboro, N.C., Reba and Wayne Goff of Floyd, Norma and Ralph Roberts of Frederick, Md.; grandchildren, Sterling Hatcher, Kristin Goff, Nicholas and Suzanne Hatcher, and Julia Roberts; step granddaughter, Heather Pratt; step great-granddaughter, Cassidy Jordan Pratt. Lynda was a teacher at Christiansburg Middle School and will be missed by her co-workers and students. Her love of the mountains and the ocean were exceeded only by her love for family and friends. Surviving are a daughter, Andi Ostorne, Radford; her parents, Bernard and Lucille Bixler, Richmond; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Violet B. and Michael Harris, Richmond, Bernadette and Thomas M. Rinker, Dinwiddie; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert Douglas and Donna T. Bixler, Richmond; one nephew and four nieces; also her Radford family, Guy and Donna Gentry and their children, Stephanie, Steven, Jonathan and Joey survive her. He attended the College of William and Mary and graduated from Roanoke College. He taught school for 29 years, twice receiving the Science Teacher of the Year Award by the Virginia Academy of Science in 1962 and 1972. He had also been a farmer all his life. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Jean and Dick Schaeffer of Floyd, Janet and John Coiner of Lynchburg; three grandchildren, Ann Schaeffer and her husband, John Ashenfelter, Jennifer Schaeffer and Rob Coiner.
