New River Obituaries ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- AKERS, Ruby Louise, 88, of Willis, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, June 6, 2001 at Skyline Manor Nursing Home. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, June 8, 2001 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel, Floyd, with the Rev. Harvey Carico, the Rev. Eli Yoder and the Rev. Richard Kingrea officiating. Interment will be in White Rock Cemetery. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- KANODE, Mattie Hicks, 88, of Pembroke, died Wednesday, June 6, 2001. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday evening at 7 p.m. in the Kendall Funeral Home in Pembroke. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- KINNEAR, Duncan Lyle, 96, of Prices Fork, died on Wednesday, June 6, 2001 at Heritage Hall Health Care Center after a three month illness. He was the son of John Joseph Lyle Kinnear and Rachel Lackey Kinnear of Rockbridge County, Va. Dr. Kinnear, a member of the faculty at Virginia Tech for 35 years, received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Tech and his Ph.D. from Ohio State. At Tech, he was given the Wine Award for excellence in teaching and was a member of O.D.K. He is the author of the first comprehensive history of Tech, The First Hundred Years. His survivors include his wife, Florence, of 58 years; a nephew, Samuel Patton of Hopewell Junction, N.Y.; a nephew, Finley Patton of Birmingham, Ala.; a niece, Sallie Kinnear of Arlington, Va.; a niece, Jean Kinnear of Marquette, Mich.; a niece, Charmian Clark of Concord, Mass.; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Horace L. Kinnear of Sunnyside Retirement Home, Harrisonburg, Va. There will be no public visitation period at the funeral home because of his wife's health. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 9, 2001 at 11 a.m. in the Prices Fork United Methodist Church. Services will be in the charge of the Rev. Stan Thompson, the Rev. Sam McPhail, and the Rev. Alan Thorne. Interment will follow in the James Bane Price Cemetery, Prices Fork. Pallbearers will be the men of the Adult Class in Sunday School, which Dr. Kinnear has taught for many years. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Blacksburg Rescue Squad, 200 Progress Street, Blacksburg, Va. 24060 or the Prices Fork United Methodist Church, c / o Mrs. Rita Sullivan, Charge Treasurer, 3365 McCoy Road, Blacksburg, Va. 24060.
