New River Obituaries ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- BARBER, Louis E., 58, longtime sheriff of Montgomery County, passed away Thursday, March 29, 2001 at Virginia Beach Memorial Hospital in Virginia Beach, Va. Born November 12, 1942, Sheriff Barber was a Christiansburg resident for much of his life. A veteran of the Christiansburg Police Department prior to being named Sheriff of Montgomery County in 1977. He continued in office until 1991, winning re-election four times while earning an appointment to the Virginia State Crime Commission. At the time of his death, he was employed by Virginia Beach Sheriff's Department. In addition to his career in law enforcement, Sheriff Barber was a life member of the Christiansburg Rescue Squad, remaining active for over 25 years. He was also a member of the McDaniel Masonic Lodge #86. He was married to the former Emme Morrison, and is also survived by a son and a daughter, Ronald P. (Ron) Barber of Arlington, Va., and Elaine Barber Epperly of Christiansburg; his mother, Lucile Barber of Christiansburg; grandson, John Epperly of Christiansburg; and brothers, Robert M. (Tommy) and his wife, Shelia Barber of Salem and D. Michael (Mike) and his wife, Erlene Barber of Christiansburg; and four nieces, Lori Nolen, Brandi Barber, Lisa Draper, Aimee Barber. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert L. (Tom) Barber. The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 1, 2001 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home in Christiansburg. In accordance with his wishes, a private memorial service will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Christiansburg Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 176, Christiansburg, Va. 24073. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, March 31, 2001 at the Horne Funeral Chapel, Christiansburg, conducted by Rev. Buford Linkous with burial to follow in Den Hill Cemetery. Arrangements by Horne Funeral Service, Christiansburg. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- MORRISON, Ada DeHart, 84, of Radford, passed away Thursday, March 29, 2001 at New River Valley Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late Emmett Arthur and Callie Stigger DeHart. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Melon Morrison; and a son, Eugene. Survivors include a grandson, Ronald "Pluke" Brown of Radford; and several nieces and nephews, including Betty DeHart of Radford, Barbara Latten of Radford, Nancy DeHart of Richmond and James DeHart of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; special friends, Mary Jo Spiers and Mrs. Helen Darden, both of Radford. Funeral services will be held Monday, April 2, 1001 at 11 a.m. at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford with Rev. Henry Lindsey and Rev. John Price officiating. Interment will follow in the Mountain View Cemetery on Rock Road. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- POFF, Mildred H., 86, of Christiansburg, passed away Thursday, March 29, 2001 in Heritage Hall Nursing Home. She was a member of Cambria Baptist Church. The daughter of the late James Walter and Mattie Gay Jones, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Sidney W. Poff. Surviving are daughters, Harlena Dunn of Alaska, Linda Amendola of Florida; sons, Donald R. Poff of Oklahoma, Thomas M. Poff of Christiansburg; sisters, Eileen Buck of Charlottesville, Janice Furrow of Newport; a brother, James C. Jones of Christiansburg; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, April 2, 2001, in the Horne Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Richard H. Horne with interment to follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Gideon Memorial Bibles, P.O. Box 366, Christiansburg, Va. 24068.
