New River Obituaries ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- DUNCAN, Merlie Vernon Chafin, 86, of Riner, died Thursday, March 1, 2001 at the Richfield Nursing Center in Salem. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvis L. Duncan, Sr. and a son, Alvis L. Duncan, Jr. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. E.C. (Markie) Martin of Christiansburg; a son and his wife, Roger and Joyce Duncan; one daughter-in-law, Phyllis P. Duncan, all of Blacksburg; one daughter, Eleanor Jones; one grandson, Michael and his wife, Tina; three great-grandchildren, Ashley, Casey and Leslie Jones, all of Riner. There will be no family visitation, but friends may call at the McCoy Funeral Home between the hours of 12 noon and 8 p.m. on Friday, March 2, 2001. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Blacksburg Baptist Church Memorial Fund, 550 North Main Street, Blacksburg, Va. 24060. A private graveside service will be conducted by Dr. Tommy McDearis and Dr. Don McKinney of the Blacksburg Baptist Church. Arrangements by McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- FLYNN, Minnie Simms, 69, of Pulaski, departed this life on Monday, February 26, 2001 at the Pulaski Community Hospital after a short illness. She was born December 3, 1931 in Mayberry, W.Va., the daughter of the late Charles and Nannie Simms. She was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church, Magazine Street, Pulaski. She was a lifetime member of the Pulaski County Branch of the NAACP. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband of 50 years, Roy Edward Flynn, Pulaski; one daughter, Rosemary (James) Gillespie, Alexandria; two sons, Roy Allen (Shelia) Flynn of Rocky Mount, Michael Rodney (Heather) Flynn, Roanoke; five grandchildren, Paul W. (Michelle) Snell, Jr., Preston J. (Julie) Snell, Corey D. Snell, Whitney M. Flynn and Ryan Allen Mychael Flynn; three great-grandchildren, Britanny, Aasja and Mykal; one sister, Nellie Price, Eden, N.C.; a sister-in-law, Virginia Green, Rocky Mount; brother-in-law, James Carter, Pulaski; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 2, 2001 at First Baptist Church, Magazine St., Pulaski, with the Rev. Dr. Anthony Daniles officiating. Burial will be in Pinehurst Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at First Baptist Church, Magazine Street. She was preceded in death by her parents, Nelson and Alice Lawrence Garnand. She is survived by a special friend, Louise A. Musselman of Christiansburg; also numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, March 3, at the Horne Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Max Nichols with burial to follow in Sunset Cemetery. She was a member of Morgans Chapel United Methodist Church, and was preceded in death by her husband, Richard S. Williams. Survivors include a daughter, Mary Terese Williams of Radford. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 3, 2001 at 11 a.m. at Mullins Funeral Home in Radford with Rev. Earnest Chinault officiating. Interment will follow in Sunrise Burial Park in Radford.
