New River Obituaries ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- CARROLL, Shirley Burnell, 79, of Narrows, died Tuesday, March 20, 2001 in the Lewis-Gale Medical Center, Salem. He was born in Russellville, Tenn. on May 31, 1921, and was the son of the late Charles Anderson and Verna Talley Carroll. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Slade Burnell Carroll. He was a member and active Deacon in the First Baptist Church, Narrows, and was the retired owner of Spur Feed and Supply, Narrows, The Penny Pincher and Carroll's Quick Clean, Pearisburg. He is survived by his wife, Doris Ramey Carroll, Narrows; a daughter-in-law, Caryl Carroll Robinson, Lima, Ohio; three grandchildren, Mrs. Kristine Leigh Brown, Indianapolis, Ind., Kimberly Lynn Carroll, Columbus, Ohio, Kirsten Leslie Carroll, Lexington, Ky.; a great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Carroll Brown, Indianapolis, Ind. Funeral service in Narrows with Rev. Charles Addington officiating. Burial will follow in Birchlawn Burial Park, Pearisburg. Memorial service 1 p.m. Saturday, Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- CRAWFORD, Maggie Carmina, (Betty), of Blacksburg, Va., wife of the late Roy McCoy Crawford, passed away on Saturday, March 17, 2001 at Bayfront Hospital, St. Petersburg, Fla. Born June 14, 1915, she was preceded in death by her parents, the Rev. John R. and Lucy Cruise; four sisters, Nancy Cruise, Jessie Vaughn, Ethel Mathews, and Ann Robinson; and two brothers, Jay Cruise and Ulyss Cruise. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Trula and Bill Tuck of Montgomery County; and her son and daughter-in-law, John and Kathy Crawford of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Glen S. and Ethel Cruise of Roxboro, N.C. and Roy and Maxine Cruise of King, N.C. Betty is also survived by seven grandchildren and their spouses, Steven and Araceli Cumbo of Pembroke Pines, Fla., Sherry and Mike Blosser of North Wilkesboro, N.C., Phillip and Beth Cumbo of Rural Hall, N.C., Chris and Susan Tuck of Radford, Craig Tuck of Blacksburg, Chris and Rosie Crawford of Greensboro, N.C., and James and Melinda Crawford of Gastonia, N.C. She took special joy in her ten great-grandchildren, Maricel and Clarissa Cumbo, Ryan and Logan Blosser, William and Joshua Cumbo, Dylan and Jordan Tuck, Michael Mallory and Alexandra Crawford. Also surviving are Betty's four sisters-in-law, Lena Crawford, Lella Crawford, Carrie Crawford and Mary Cruise, along with many special nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends whose lives she enriched through the years. A longtime resident of Blacksburg, Betty opened Betty Ann's Beauty Shop in 1942. It later moved to 500 Pepper Street, Blacksburg as part of Roy's Cash Store, where it remained for 27 years. She made friends with all her customers and they are scattered all over the world. Betty was active in the formation of the Virginia State Cosmetology Association, in which she held several offices, and was active in lobbying for the establishment of education, professional standards, and testing for certification. She was active in the past with the Order of the Eastern Star and the VFW Auxiliary and held offices in both organizations. Betty and Roy enjoyed an early retirement, and for more than 25 years they did the things they enjoyed most, buying and selling antiques and collectibles at their little shop on Radford Street in Christiansburg, traveling, playing cards and bingo, painting still life studies and landscapes, visiting with family and friends, and eating out. At the time of his death in 1997, they had been married for just over 60 years. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, March 23, 2001 at 11 a.m. in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in the Westview Cemetery. George - A Celebration of Life Service for George Stern who passed away Monday, March 19, 2001 will be held at 10 a.m., today, at the Virginia Tech Memorial Chapel for family and friends. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- WRIGHT, Kathleen Maphis, (Kaye), passed away Friday evening, March 16, 2001, at the Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Blacksburg. She was the widow of Ralph Ross Wright, a professor of electrical engineering at Virginia Tech from 1943 to his death in April of 1968. She was preceded in death by her parents, Omer and Elsie Maphis of Sebring, Fla., and her sister, Dorothy Jane (DJ) Gilliam of Anchorage, Alaska. She is survived by a brother, John E. Maphis of Richmond, Va. and four sons, three daughters-in-law, and three grandchildren: David R. and Sylvia N. Wright of Blacksburg and Toni Christine Wright of Radford, James N. and Wanda H. Wright and James Michael and Matthew Ross Wright of Blacksburg, Robert E. Wright of Springfield, Ill., and Gary L. and Vicki R. Wright of Little Rock, Ark. Kaye grew up in Oak Park, Ill., married Ralph, and moved to Blacksburg in 1945. She earned a degree from Virginia Tech in 1947, raised a family, and remained in Blacksburg until her death. She was the first woman on Blacksburg's Town Council (1969), part of the original three person staff of Blacksburg's first newspaper, The Sun, a president and charter member of the local League of Women Voters, and a chairman for the Board of Zoning Appeals. She was a longtime member of the Blacksburg Presbyterian Church, where she also worked as a secretary, sang in the choir, and served as a Deacon. She was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi honorary fraternity, the Junior Women's Club, the Virginia Tech Glee Club, and the Westminster Club. She worked at the National Bank of Blacksburg and the Cooper House, the Campus Presbyterian Ministry. She helped found and was a charter (and lifetime) member of the Shawnee Swim Club, also helped start Blacksburg's original swim team. She was an avid fan of swimming, politics, Virginia Tech sports, and mostly, of her family. She left them far too soon, they will always miss her. The family will informally receive guests at 1608 Westover Drive, Blacksburg, from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 24. Visitation will be held at McCoy Funeral Home Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held Sunday, 2 p.m., at Blacksburg Presbyterian Church, with graveside service following at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Christiansburg. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimers Association, 919 N. Michigan Avenue, Suite 1100, Chicago, Ill. 60611-1676.
