New River Obituaries ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- AMOS, Gracie May Vest, of Shawsville, glided through the Pearly Gates of Heaven into her Savior's arms on Thursday, March 15, 2001. Waiting there to meet her was her husband, James M. (Jake) Amos, her mother and dad, James Noah Vest and Lottie Ellen Light Vest, sisters, Bertie, Calma, Alma, Mary and Lois, and a brother, Willie, and a great-granddaughter, Breann Burchett. She leaves behind to mourn their loss and cherish her memory a son and daughter-in-law, Teddy J. (T.R.) and Jo Vest of Shawsville; daughters and sons-in-law, Virginia Burchett and Florence Amos, both of Roanoke, Edna and Melvin Lutz of Salem, Nancy and Martin Gale Gallimore of Ironto; a sister and brother-in-law, Naomi and John Akers of Elliston; brothers and sisters-in-law, Dayton and Ann Vest of Shawsville, Edgar and Nina Vest of Dublin. Also surviving are thirteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Services will be at Oakey's South Chapel 10 a.m. Monday, March 19, 2001. The Rev. Jeff Wilson and the Rev. David Tanner will officiate. Interment will follow in Congregational Holiness Cemetery in Shawsville. The family will receive friends at Oakey's South Chapel from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- CONNER, Kenneth M., 58, of Pilot, went to be with the Lord on Friday, March 16, 2001. He was employed by Mechanical Development in Salem. Mr. Conner was preceded in death by his parents, John Cledys and Willie Sisson Conner. He is survived by his wife, Barbara W. Conner; sister, Francis Conner Sowers; brother, Earl Conner; special cousins, Peggy Conner, Macle Conner, Gerlene Conner; several nieces and nephews. A lifetime resident of Montgomery County she was born June 3, 1918, the daughter of the late Walter J. and Elizabeth Argabright Martin. Mr. Myers went home to be with the Lord after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Franklin County on August 19, 1922 and was the son of the late Ollie R. Myers and Minnie McBride Myers. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Robert Myers. He served in the Merchant Marines during WWII and the Korean Conflict. Arrangements are being handled by Lotz Funeral Home, Salem. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- WEBB, Kate S., 101, of Radford, passed away Thursday, March 15, 2001 at Birdmont Manor in Wytheville. She was born on December 7, 1899, a daughter of the late J. W. and Emma Price Snider. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William H. Webb, Sr., son, William H. Webb, Jr. She attended Radford State Teachers College and taught school beginning in 1917 at the Springdale School in the Walker Creek District of Giles County. She also was a Counselor and Scout Camp Director at Camp Coffey, and a Red Cross Blood Mobile volunteer worker. Mrs. Webb has been a resident of Radford since her marriage to Harry Webb on January 24, 1919 in Bristol, Tenn. She attended Fairlawn Presbyterian Church, she was also a member of the Virginia May Chapter #92 Order of Eastern Star since March 12, 1927. She lived at Brookmeade in Shawsville for 12 years and at Birdmont since 1998. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Norma and David E. Edmonds of Pulaski; a daughter-in-law, Belle B. Webb, Bristol, Tenn.; a grandson, Robert S. and Rhonda Melton of Radford; great-granddaughter, Katelyn Ashley Melton. Graveside services will be held Sunday, March 18, 2001 at 2 p.m. at the West View Cemetery in Radford with Dr. Cortez Cooper officiating.
