The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 17, 2001 at Horne Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Richard Kingrea and Rev. Pete Flinchum officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Horne Funeral Service in Christiansburg is serving the family. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- CARDEN, Alfred Graton, (Al), 72, of 317 Maple Street, Dublin, died Sunday morning, January 14, 2001 in the Community Hospital of the Roanoke Valley. He was born in Parrott on June 28, 1928 and was the son of the late James Stern Carden and Emma Collins Carden. He was a retired employee of Lynchburg Foundry having 37 years of service. He was a member of the Dublin United Methodist Church and a member of the Thornspring Golf Club. Surviving are his wife, Sue Brillheart Carden, Dublin; daughters and son-in-law, Sarah Spence, Grand Rapids, Michigan, Amy and Luke Rooks of Hawaii; sons and daughters-in-law, Nick and Juliet Carden, Leesburg, Georgia, Tony and Paula Carden, Evans, Georgia; sisters, Zelma McGinnis, Parrott, Euva Lee McGinnis, Richmond, Kentucky; brother, Paul Carden, Roanoke; grandchildren, Christopher Scott, Jesse Scott, Andrew Spence, Gray Carden, Joshua Carden, Jacob Carden and Hannah Rooks. Funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. from Stevens Funeral Chapel with Rev. Richard Patterson officiating. Burial will follow in the Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin. Arrangements by Stevens Funeral Home, Pulaski. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- DUNCAN, Martha Jane Viars, 87, of 3006 Honaker Road, Draper, passed away Monday evening, January 15, 2001, at Birdmont Manor-Asbury Center, Wytheville. Born June 29, 1913, in Wythe County she was the daughter of the late James Viars and Rosetta Peak Viars. One sister, Maudie Viars and five brothers, Harless, Erving, Sprail, Monroe, Bert, and Jim Viars preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband, Charlie Ellis Duncan of Draper; daughters, Mrs. Carl (Linda) Tucker of Lexington, N.C., Mrs. Clarence (Velva) Pernell of Mansfield, Ohio; son, Rev. John Douglas Duncan of Barren Springs; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at the Bower Funeral Home Chapel, Pulaski with the Rev. H.T. and Betty Atkinson officiating. Interment will follow at the Memorial Christian Church Cemetery. Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski is handling the arrangements. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- HAYMORE, Billy, 71, of Narrows, died Monday, January 15, 2001 in the Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital, Pearisburg. A lifelong resident of Giles County, he was born on February 7, 1929 and was the son of the late Ellis and Mary Elizabeth Nelson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Dunigan Haymore, two sisters, Virginia Hardy and Katie Shrader, and a brother, Coolidge Haymore. He was of the Protestant faith and at the time of his death, he was employed by Mac Gallimore Construction Company, Narrows, Va. He is survived by a sister and her husband, Ellis Mae and Harold Lambert, Narrows; a half sister and brother-in-law, Eunice and Freddie Parks, Covington; a special niece and her husband, Kim and Danny Weatherly and their daughters, Alicia, Samantha, and Megan; and many other nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 18, 2001 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Riffe's Funeral Service in Narrows with Evangelist Jim Hill officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery, on Wolf Creek near Narrows. The family will receive friends at Riffe's in Narrows, Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- JOHNSTON, Rodney Wayne, 51, of Staffordsville, died Sunday, January 14, 2001 at VA Medical Center, Beckley, W.Va. He was born September 10, 1949 at Pearisburg, Va. the son of the late Ernest Monroe and Lula Gray Harrell Johnston. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Randy and Roger Johnston. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam Conflict. He is survived by his stepmother, Elizabeth Johnston, Lillington, N.C.; a stepbrother, Walter Wilson, Lillington, N.C.; sisters-in-law, Abbie Johnston, Staffordsville, Donna Hall, Stafford County; special nieces and nephews, David Johnston, Lisa Johnston, Dustin Johnston and Deena Johnston. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Chapel, White Gate with Rev. Wayne Monroe officiating. Burial in the Staffordsville Cemetery, Staffordsville. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- MABIE, Sherry Ellen Saunders, 47, died Monday, January 15, 2001 at her home in Radford. She was born in Radford on August 14, 1953, the daughter of Robert Saunders and the late Doris Saunders. Sherry graduated from Roanoke Memorial School of Nursing in 1974. After graduation she went to work for Radford Community Hospital where she spent many years working in the emergency room. She ended her nursing career working in the mother baby suite at Carilion New River Valley Hospital. She was a member of Grove United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her mother, and father-in-law, Hamilton H. Mabie. Survivors, in addition to her father, include her husband, John H. Mabie; daughters, Laura A. and Sarah K. Mabie; son, Jeff H. Mabie; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Phil Woods and their children, Josh and Todd; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert D. and Michelle Saunders and their children, Robbie, Katie and William; sisters-in-law and husbands, Janet M. and David Matthews and their children, Greg and Jill Matthews and Sara J. Mabie and Sufian Al-Khaldi and their child, Sharif Mabie-Alkhaldi. Memorial services will be held Thursday, January 18, 2001 at 2 p.m. at the Grove United Methodist Church in Radford with Rev. He will be greatly missed by his devoted daughter and son-in-law, Betty Jo and Charles Hypes of Riner, Va. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, two sisters-in-law, and two special friends, Ethel Nunley and Grace Phillips. He was born in Montgomery County, Va., on April 7, 1922 to the late Mark Jennings and Ida Alls Slusser. He was a loving husband and devoted father and grandfather. He served proudly during WWII in the United States Army. He was retired from the Radford Army Ammunitions Plant. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gertrude Dove Slusser. He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathleen and David Cromer, Linda and Ernie Price, all of Blacksburg; four granddaughters and their spouses, Debora and Kenneth Gaborik, Donna and Scottie Graham, Tamela and Tim McCoy, Tina and Greg Rupe; three great-grandchildren, Kendra Gaborik, David Caldwell, Lucas Jennings Graham; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Logan and Aliene Slusser of Blacksburg, Wilbur and Carol Slusser of Newport News; sisters, Jeannie Pendergrass and Inez Epperly, both of Blacksburg; sister and brother-in-law, Laura Lou and Lama Lafon of Blacksburg; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Reverend Claude T. and Claudia Dove of Blacksburg; sister-in-law, Helen Lowry of Portsmouth; special niece, Thelma Jean Linkous; and special friends, Clifford and Leona Lovern. She was born in Wythe County, the daughter of the late Otis Clyde and Marie Simmerman Pannell. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, George R. Davis; a brother, Reed Pannell; and a sister, Lula Halsey. She is survived by a sister, Martha Albright of Fayetteville, Ark.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Clayton and Magalene Pannell of Etowah, Tenn., Lorris and Judy Pannell of Winston-Salem, N.C.; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Betty Pannell of Leesburg, Va., Thelma Price of Roanoke, Va., James Halsey of Oak Ridge, Tenn., Hazel and Jim Henderson of Rocky Mount, Va., Marie and Charles Davis of Collinsville, Va., Evelyn and Harry Davis of Vinton, Va.; and several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews also survive. She was a former employee of Burlington Industries and Buster Brown. Her family was blessed by her presence. She is survived by her husband, Charles E. Dean of Marion, Virginia; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Larry A. and Debbie Dean of Marion, Virginia and Garry E. Dean of Wytheville, Virginia; five grandchildren, Lisa Crockett and husband, Timothy, Dana Crewey and husband, Josh, Travis Dean, Joshua A. Dean and Cheyenne Dean; three great-grandchildren, Brian Crockett, Tyler Crockett and Joshua Dean-Crewey; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Glenn S. and Lucille Fowler of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and Charles A. and Betty Fowler of Indianapolis, Indiana; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Nonia F. and Shirley Gamble of Wytheville, Virginia and Helen F. He was born in Carroll County, February 11, 1937, and was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Ester Goad. He is survived by his wife, Jean Huff Goad, of 41 years; his special pets, Smokey, his dog, and Rastice and Misty, his cats; sister, Clessie Quesenberry and brother-in-law, Stanley; sister, Essie Gay Shupe, all of Dugspur, Va.; nephews, Ronald Quesenberry and wife Evelyn of Roanoke, Elden Shupe and wife Cheryl of Dugspur, Va.; nieces, Wanda Montgomery, Hillsville, Deborah Bratton and husband John of Dugspur, Va.; several great nieces and nephews. He served in the 20th Engineer Battalion of the U.S. Army. Manford was a member of the Covenant Presbyterian Church. He was Vice President of Albert Brothers Construction, and worked many years for Virginia Asphalt Paving Company. He was presently working for Adams Construction Company. Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, January 16, 2001, at Oakey's South Chapel.
