The Roanoke Times New River Obituaries Saturday, January 27, 2001 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- COX, Andrew Crisley, 41, of Radford, died Friday, January 26, 2001 at his home. Andy was born August 6, 1959. He graduated from Floyd County High School in 1978 and was a member of the Floyd County Volunteer Fire Department Station #4 for twelve years. An avid auction follower, he spent much time collecting, restoring and trading antiques. He was especially interested in pieces from Floyd County. Dedicated to his friends and family, Andy always had time to help out a neighbor or visit a friend. He devotedly cared for his grandmother, Evie Duncan Shelton, until her death. He was preceded in death by his father, Elder Jack Willard Cox. Survivors include his mother, Colleen Duncan Cox of Radford; brothers and sisters-in-law, David and Brenda Cox of Rocky Mount, Joe and Judy Cox of Radford, Sam and Dana Cox of Christiansburg, Arthur and Carol Cox of Radford, Mike Cox of Galax; sister, Faye Cox of Roanoke; nieces and nephews, Todd Cox, Dean Shatley, Brian Cox, Jason Cox, Thomas Cox, Crisley Cox, Mandy Atkinson, Matthew Cox, Alice Cox, Marsha Cox, and Michelle Cox, who were like the daughters he never had of his own; aunts and uncles, Martin Hollandsworth of Floyd, Nettie and Alvis Duncan of Norfolk, Dorcie and Grover Semones of Salem, Mabel and Bill Curry of Danville, French Hogan of Vinton, Mary Marshall of Christiansburg, Herbert and Ava Cox of Christiansburg, Arnold and Treva Poff of Christiansburg; special cousins, Mary and Keeko Allman of Roanoke; and special friend, Evelyn Rutrough of Floyd. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Sunday at the Valley View Primitive Baptist Church of Riner with Elder Raymond Goad and Elder C. B. Davis, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Cemetery, Christiansburg. The family will receive friends from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Maberry Funeral Home, Floyd. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, January 27 at St. Paul United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Doug Kanney. Arrangements by Horne Funeral Service. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- SNYDER, Rev. Wayne, 69, of 1496 Clendennin Road in Narrows, was suddenly called home to be with his Lord, Jesus Christ, on Thursday, January 25, 2001, at Medina, Ohio. Born in Pikeville, Ky., on March 1, 1931, he was a son of Oma Woody Cassell of Avon Lake, Ohio, and the late Emmit Snyder. For over 30 years, he was a resident of Cleveland, Ohio, and employed at General Motors Parma Plant. He had been a member of Parma Pentecostal Church and was currently serving as Pastor of Coulters Chapel in Jesus Name at Linside, W.Va. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Shriners and Scottish Rite and was an avid Ham Radio operator. Wayne served his county in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Becky Snyder. Surviving are his beloved wife and fellow labor for the Lord of almost 50 years, Joann Slaughter Snyder; a son and daughter-in-law, Victor and Cindy Snyder of Lodi, Ohio; three daughters and sons-in-law, Yvette and Tex Meadows of Newburg Heights, Ohio, Sheila and Edward Ramsdell of Seville, Ohio, and Teresha Snyder of Harvard, Ill.; six grandchildren; his mother; and his sister, Madeline S. Edwards of Burbank, Ohio. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, January 29, 2001, at 2 p.m. in the Kendall Funeral Home Chapel in Pembroke with the Rev. Dan Deaton and the Rev. Lafayette Terry officiating. Burial will follow in the Deaton Family Cemetery in the Clendennin Community at Narrows. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- SONGER, Andrew Lee, 63, of 505 Circle Drive, Pembroke, died Wednesday, January 24, 2001 at Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg, after a short illness. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Kendall Funeral Home, 605 Snidow St. in Pembroke, with the Rev. Eddie Kendall and the Rev. Jim Flaugher officiating. Burial will follow in the Lucas Cemetery at Newport. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and other times at the home of Myra LeJeune, 117 River Road, Pembroke. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- WALKER, Lorenzo, Sr., 46, of New River, died Thursday, January 25, 2001, at the home. He was the son of Alfonso Walker, Sr., and Norma Walker of New River, and was an employee of New River Industries. He was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church, New River. He is survived by two daughters, Sonya Walker, and Tonya Walker, both of New River; a son, Lorenzo Walker, Jr. (Bubba), of New River; one brother, Alfonso Walker, Jr., of Louisville, Ky.; three sisters, Marie Walker, Beverly Walker, and Bernice Walker (Freda), all of New River; and one grandchild, Tyanna Haynes. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, January 28, 2001, at Missionary Baptist Church, New River, with Minister Kevin Fiorini. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service on Sunday. She was born in Montgomery County, Virginia, on March 18, 1906, to the late William L. and Nellie Charlton Winston. She is survived by her niece, Cynthia W. Overton of New Castle; two great-nieces, Lynn Horn of Salem and Rebecca Frango of New Castle; one great-nephew, Joseph Garst of Clarksville, Tenn. Graveside services will be conducted Sunday, January 28, 2001, at 2 p.m. in the Westview Cemetery Blacksburg, with the Rev. Robert P. Jones officiating. Arrangements by McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- CARTY, Ruth Elizabeth, 79, of Wytheville, died Thursday, January 25, 2001, in the Wythe County Community Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hess Carty. She was an employee of Kincer-Miller Hardware for over 20 years. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Gil and Sandy Carty, Wytheville; a brother, Lloyd Sult, Wytheville; a sister, Bobby Collins, Jacksonville, Florida; and grandchildren, Gil "Homer" Carty and Chelsea Carty. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, with interment to follow in the St. Johns Lutheran Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday evening at the Gillman Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. Gillman Funeral Chapel, is in charge of the arrangements. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- DRAWBOND, Orval Reese, (Lulie), 92, of Raphine, Va., passed away Wednesday, January 24, 2001 at the Stonewall Jackson Hospital after several months of illness. Mr. Drawbond was born on June 28, 1908, a son of the late Molly (Drawbond) and A. Thomas Hostetter. After the death of his mother, he was adopted by his great-aunt and uncle, Betty (Link) and John Pogue Drawbond. Orval married Mary S. Tyree on January 28, 1935. Mr. Drawbond served in the U.S. Army Enlisted Reserve Corps and as a 2nd Lt. in the 333rd Signal Corps Battalion of the Citizen Military Training Camp (CMTC) at Fort Monmouth, N.J. and Fort Eustis, Va. He has been a lifelong farmer and "jack of all trades." He briefly worked at DuPont in Waynesboro and then retired from the American Safety Razor Plant in Verona. Mr. Drawbond and his wife made their home on a farm near Raphine, named Steele's Fort after the original owners. During the 60s he opened part of his home, which was built as a fort against the Indians in 1754, as a museum to the public. In 1996 he was invited to tape a segment of Willard Scott's HGTV "Home and Garden Almanac" Show, on which he talked to Mr. Scott about one of his "Johnny Jumper" gasoline engines. Mr. Drawbond also loved to entertain his friends and family and hosted many reunions and picnics at his home. He was a member of the Fairfield United Methodist Church and a former member of Emory United Methodist Church. His parents and a brother, Mr. William Edward Hostetter, preceded him in death. In addition to his devoted wife, an older brother, Mr. Chester A. Hostetter of Goshen, survives him. Also surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, John P. and Gloria S. Drawbond; a son, R. Mitchell Drawbond, all of Raphine; a daughter and son-in-law, Betty C. and William M. Hoover, III of Kings Mountain, N.C.; and a daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy D. and Gary W. Gearhart of Raphine; grandchildren, spouses and great-grandchildren as follows: Miriam and Marty Quigley of Langley AFB, Va., Joanna and Joey Jones, Jessica and Joshua of Raphine, John Jr. and Sandy Drawbond, Mason of Staunton, Dianna and Randy Davis, Bryanna of Stuarts Draft, William and Cheryl Hoover, Mitch and Reese of Statesville, N.C., David and Aimie Hoover of Raeford, N.C., Robert and Jennifer Hoover of Birmingham, Ala., Ruth and Donald Bell of Kings Mountain, N.C., Kevin Gearhart of Norcross, Ga., and Curtis Gearhart, a student at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg; and six half brothers and half sisters. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 27, 2001 in the Fairfield Cemetery with Rev. R. Douglas Gunsalus officiating. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Fairfield United Methodist Church Building Fund or the Fairfield Rescue Squad. Visitation Sunday from 2 p.m. until service time at the Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- GREEN, Harold Douglas, 60, of Roanoke, died Thursday, January 25, 2001. He was born on May 15, 1940, in Franklin County, Va. He retired from Lowes of Roanoke. Harold enjoyed spending time outdoors, camping and gardening. Harold was always willing to lend a helping hand to others. He was preceded in death by his father, Ernest M. Green. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Eloise Willis Green; his mother, Dessie Dickerson of Check; his grandmother, Vinie Sloan of Salem; four daughters, Carolyn Green, Lois Hatcher, Regina Kay Snyder and husband, Barry Snyder, and Robin Starnes and her husband, Bobby, all of Roanoke; two grandchildren, Robert "Junior" Starnes, and Amanda Kay Hatcher; one sister, Gladys Nichols of Callaway; three brothers, Roy Green of Floyd, David Green and James Green, both of Check; numerous nieces and nephews; and a faithful dog, Rocky. Harold will be sadly missed by many. Funeral services will be held on 1 p.m. Monday, January 29, at Lotz Roanoke Chapel, with the Rev. Doug Witt officiating. Burial will be at Monte Vista Church of the Brethren Cemetery. She was the widow of both James Leonard Smith, Sr. and Nathan Hunt, and predeceased by a son, James L. (Jim) Smith, Jr. Born in Franklin County, she was a daughter of the late J. Hairston Jamison and Cynthia Elizabeth Akers Jamison. Cora was an active member of Pigg River Primitive Baptist Church, Franklin County. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald L. Smith and Jean Hancock Smith of Slagle, La.; a daughter-in-law, Theresa Custer Smith of Roanoke; two grandsons and their wives, Gregory and Alesa Smith of Cleveland, Tenn., R. L. and DeeDee Smith of Hot Springs, Ark.; four granddaughters and husbands, Pamela Smith Dooley and Alton Dooley of Buchanan, Lynn Smith Oler and Chris Oler of Mary Esther, Fla., Rhonda Smith Ivey and Ward Ivey of Alexandria, La., Cathy Smith Statham of Pineville, La.; four great-grandsons; four great-granddaughters; sisters, Mary Jamison Conner of Roanoke, Rosalia Jamison Abshire and her husband, Woodrow Abshire of Bent Mountain; two special nieces, Geri Abshire Worrell of Salem and Rosemary Abshire of Bent Mountain, whom the family wishes to thank for their loving care of grandma Cora during her illness; many other nieces, nephews and friends. He was born August 12, 1947 in Bedford County, Virginia and graduated from Lord Botetourt High School in 1966. Ken served in the United States Army and was a Vietnam veteran. He was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, a member of the Old Dominion Knife Club and served as a volunteer for Roanoke Festival In The Park for 15 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lacy Charles McClure and Shirley Lilly McClure. He is survived by his wife, Debbie Hutto McClure; a daughter and son-in-law, Heather and Greg McCool, Beaver, Pennsylvania; a daughter and her fiancZ, Melissa McClure and Dave Dean, Erie, Pennsylvania; four grandchildren, Geoffrey, Kirstie, Caitlin and Michael McCool, Beaver, Pennsylvania; brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles and Germaine McClure, Columbia, South Carolina, Cottie and Donna McClure, Villamont; sister and brother-in-law, Doris and Dick Orr, Kingsport, Tennessee; his mother-in-law, Martha Gray Hutto, Manassas; brothers-in-law and their wives, Kirby Hutto and Lili Powell, North Garden, Va. and Kevin and Barbara Hutto, Clifton, Va.; sisters-in-law and their husbands, Judi and Phil Quesenberry, Radford, Karla and Gene Reid, Manassas; also many loving relatives and friends; loyal customers; and a faithful dog, Alex.
