The Roanoke Times New River Obituaries Published on Wednesday, January 03, 2001 - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- ACORD, Dana Louise Bursey, 57, of Christiansburg, Va., went to be with the Lord on Monday, January 1, 2001 at Montgomery Regional Hospital after a long illness. She was a member of the Sugar Grove Baptist Church. She was one of the original creators of Patrick Enterprises in Pembroke, Va. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry S. and Una Edith Dorton Bursey of Pembroke, and a sister, Nancy Carolyn Bursey of Lewistown, Montana. Survivors include her husband, Kenneth R. Acord; five sons, H. Jefferson Acord and wife, Anita Carol, of Christiansburg, Ted A. Acord and wife, Dee Ann, of Pembroke, Tim K. Acord and wife, Carol Sue, of Floyd, Clifton K. Acord and wife, Jennifer Lynn, and Glen C. Acord and wife, Jennifer Dawn, all of Christiansburg; a twin sister, Joanne White and her husband, Gerald, of Stephens City; nine grandchildren, three nieces and eight nephews. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, January 4, at the Horne Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Mann officiating. Interment will follow in the Family Cemetery. Born April 7, 1938 in Baltimore, Maryland she was the daughter of the late Ione Cunningham Leeson and Vance Gilbert Leeson. Joan was a beloved wife, parent, teacher and friend. She was a highly regarded elementary school teacher and principal where she served the children of both Claremont and Snowville Elementary Schools where she retired in 1991 after 30 years in the school system. She served on the Alumni Board for Radford University where she earned both her Bachelors and her Masters Degrees. Her passions included boating, traveling, and helping others, and was dedicated to her community serving on boards for the YMCA and the American Cancer Society. She is survived by her husband, John M. "Jack" Pearman of Pulaski; a son, John Gilbert "Gil" Pearman of Waynesboro; one sister, Ione Davis of Pulaski. Graveside funeral services will be held Friday January 5, 2001 at 11 a.m. at Oakwood Cemetery in Pulaski. Visiting will be anytime Thursday after 2 p.m. at Thomas M. Haskins, 71, of Goldsboro, N.C., born June 10, 1929, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, December 27, 2000. She was one of ten children born to the late Susie Clark and Alexander G. Haskins in Winterpock, Va., where she received her early education in Chesterfield County School. Rubye was valedictorian of Hickory Hill High School's Class of 1945. She earned a degree in Business Education in 1949 from Virginia State University. She is the widow of the late MSGT Hampton Alexander Dillard, Sr. of Vicker, Va. They were blessed with a family of five children. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Hampton Alexander Dillard, III. She joined Tabernacle Baptist Church at an early age and strengthened her Christian faith as a member of several churches as she traveled to various duty stations with her husband during his career. Her last church affiliation was with Antioch Missionary Baptist Church where she served in the Deaconess Ministry, the Young at Heart Ministry, the Inspirational Mass and Hymn Choirs, and as Church Secretary until prohibited by her illness. Rubye is a Past Commandress of Mizpah Court #79 of the Daughters of Isis, a Past Loyal Lady Ruler of C.A. Whithead Assembly #188, Order of the Golden Circle and a Past Matron of the Loving Hearts Chapter #574, Order of Eastern Star (PHA). Mama Dee (as often called) leaves to honor her memory four sons, Hampton A. (Eleanor) Dillard of Durham, N.C., Mi chael L. (Jeanene) Dillard of Valdosta, Ga., Keith Dillard of Radford, Gregory L. Dillard of Goldsboro, N.C.; one daughter, Lettye Dillard Clark of Goldsboro, N.C.; two brothers, George (Ruth) Haskins and Fred (Anne) Haskins of Richmond; four sisters, Annie Hansley, Mildred Owen, Elsie (Richard) Cox, Olivia (Earl) Finn of Richmond; two sisters-in-law, Shirley Dillard (Joe) Harris of Colorado, Patricia (Clifford) Dillard in Christiansburg; five granddaughters; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, January 7, 2001 at Sunset Cemetery in Christiansburg, Va. Mr. Dove was born June 28, 1923 in Montgomery County, Va. to the late Kent L. and Julie Weddle Dove. He was a member of the 82nd Airborne Division serving in W.W. II (Army). Mr. Dove attended Virginia Tech University and the Roanoke Business College. He retired from Select Sires Assoc. of Rocky Mount, Va. after 35 years of service. Mr. Dove was also a member of North Fork Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his former wife, Vada Harris Dove. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Michael Bowen of Stokesdale, N.C.; a stepson, Thomas Noah Lavelle and wife, Diane of Christiansburg, Va.; a brother, Curtis W. Dove and wife, Edie of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two grandsons, Justin D. and Matthew K. Bowen of Stokesdale, N.C.; two stepgrandsons, Thomas N. and Wesley H.
