She was born in Wilmington, Del. on June 24, 1913 to the late Benjamin and Sarah Broadwater Clark. She was preceded in death by her husband George E. Goodyear, She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, David C. and Janice Goodyear, Blacksburg; three grandchildren, Jon, Megan and Eric; a great-granddaughter, Sarah. Interment will be in the All Saint Cemetery in Wilmington, Del., the family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. with a short service at 7 p.m. Monday evening at McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- RUPE, Leonard Johnson, (Johnny), 70, of Pulaski, passed away Saturday, January 27, 2001. Funeral 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- RUPE, Roger Lee, 51, of 5089 Southern Dr., Dublin, passed away Sunday morning, January 28, 2001, at the home of his sister in Salem, Va. Born February 15, 1949 in Pulaski, Va., he is the son of Dollie Reynolds Rupe Lawson and the late William Preston Rupe, Sr. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served in the Vietnam conflict. He had been an operations manager for Consolidated Stores Corporation. Surviving are one daughter, Kerry Diane Rupe, Radford; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Christopher L. Rupe, Radford, Kevin L. Rupe and Kristy S. Rupe, Huntsville, Alabama; one grandson, Benjamin Kevin Rupe, Juneau, Alaska; mother, Dollie Reynolds Rupe Lawson, Salem; three sisters, Mrs. Clyde W. (Doris) Cobb, Bena, Va., Mrs. Carl (Betty) McClaughlin, Maryville, Tenn., Brenda Harpine, Salem; three brothers, William P. Rupe, Jr., Salem, Richard Rupe, Pulaski, Donnie Rupe, Salem. Graveside funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin, with the Rev. Johnny Howlett officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Memory Gardens. Full military honors will be conducted at the graveside by the Pulaski V. F. W. Post #1184. Visitation will be anytime after 3 p.m. Monday afternoon, with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday evening at Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski. Funeral 2 p.m. Tuesday Stevens Funeral Chapel, Pulaski. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- WILSON, Ruth Coleman, 69, of West Hills Dr., Bedford, died Friday, January 26, 2001 at Virginia Baptist Hospital. She was the wife of M. Calvin Wilson. Born February 11, 1931 in Shenandoah County, she was a daughter of the late Rufus Heaton Wynkoop and Vallie Ruth McIlwee Wynkoop and was predeceased by a brother, Mervin Wynkoop. Mrs. Wilson was a member of Trinity Baptist Church of Bedford and retired from Lynchburg Physical Therapy. She later worked for Garman & Proffitt Physical Therapy, Inc. In addition to her husband Calvin, she is survived by two sons, Stephen B. Coleman and wife Sandra, Eddie Coleman and wife, Margie; a daughter, Stephanie C. Link and husband, Timothy, all of Rustburg; two stepchildren, Ronald T. Wilson of Bedford and Janet W. Jacobs of Moneta; two sisters, Elga Stoneburner of Toms Brook, Janice Elliott of Front Royal; a brother, Zene Wynkoop of Front Royal; six grandchildren, Robbie and Whitney Hughes, Joshua and Marie Coleman, Christopher and Shawn Coleman; and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, January 30, 2001 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel by the Rev. Wessley Patterson, Pastor of Trinity Baptist Church. Burial will be in Cumbie Memorial Cemetery, Rustburg. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Lynchburg Unit Office, 2316 Atherholt Rd., Lynchburg, Va. 24501. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- UMBERGER, June Hampton, 81, of Wytheville, died early Saturday, January 27, 2001 in the Wythe County Community Hospital. She was born in Bluefield, W. Va., daughter of the late Robert Kyle and Estella Udy Hampton. She was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Garfield Umberger, Jr. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and Sonny Silvers of Vinton, Tess and Buddy Umberger of Forest; a son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Diane Umberger of Wytheville; two sisters, Leona Wyatt, Atlanta, Ga., Alma Baumgardner, Richmond; six grandchildren, Jeffrey Umberger, Karen Silvers, Amy Skaff, Andy Silvers, Chip Umberger, Cheryl Alderman; seven great-grandchildren, Sydney Umberger, Logan Skaff, Chelsea Umberger, Haley Alderman, Joshua Alderman, Allison Alderman and Jacob Peyton Umberger; and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, January 29, 2001 at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, with Pastor Steven Ridenhour officiating. Interment will follow in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery. The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the charity of one's choice. Barnett Funeral Home, Wytheville, is in charge of arrangements. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- LIPSCOMB, Thelma Underwood, 91, of Roanoke, went to Heaven Saturday, January 27, 2001. Mrs. Lipscomb was born January 4, 1910, the daughter of the late James Otha and Della May Webb Underwood. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Hubert Lipscomb "Shorty" and her son, Bobby Cody Ratliff; two brothers, Posey and Melvin Underwood; and two sisters, Louise Tyree and Barbara Lorene Higgs "Rene." She was retired from Roanoke Mills after 30 years as an inspector. She belonged to the Williamson Road Eastern Star Chapter #119 and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Mrs. Lipscomb is survived by three sisters, Wilma Likens of Radford, Violet Radford of Buchanan, and Mina Manning and her husband, Everett Manning of Roanoke; a sister-in-law, Phyllis Underwood of Jacksonville, Fla.; numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 30, 2001, at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel with Dr. Harry Y. Gamble and Pastor Andrew M. Purcell officiating. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- WILLIAMS, Forrest Shumate, 94, of Roanoke, passed away unexpectedly Friday morning, January 26, 2001 at the Roanoke United Methodist Home. He was born October 11, 1906 in Henry, Va., a son of the late Percy Allen and Alzie Ruth Shumate Williams and was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Barclay Williams. The last of his generation, he was preceded in death by one brother and four sisters. With only a fifth grade education, Mr. Williams founded Williams Supply in Roanoke, which grew to be one of the largest and most successful electrical supply businesses in Western and Central Virginia, retiring in 1983. Leading an exemplary life, Mr. Williams had a wide circle of friends and business acquaintances and has been the recipient of many awards, including the Outstanding Philanthropist Award of the National Society of Fund-raising executives in 1993 and the Noel C. Taylor Distinguished Humanitarian Award in 1997; and also served on the Board of Directors of the City Rescue Mission. A trustee of Ferrum College from 1965 to 1972, Mr. Williams was named Trustee Emeritus in 1980. For his valued work and beneficence Ferrum's first endowed professorship was named for Mr. Williams and his wife, and in 1985, the college bestowed on him the highest honor they could, the honorary degree of Doctor of Humanities. Mr. Williams was a member of Raleigh Court United Methodist Church for over 50 years and the family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the church. A gentle man with a generous humanitarian spirit, Forrest Williams' life was a celebration of honor and love. All who knew him were richer for it and he will be greatly missed by his family, close friends and the community he loved and served for many years. Surviving are a nephew, Warren W. Gilbert and his wife, Hassie of Roanoke, Louise Crotts Gilbert (wife of deceased nephew Leonard Gilbert) of Botetourt County; niece, Mary Hinman of Roanoke; and a number of grand-nephews and grand-nieces and their families. A funeral service will be held at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel Monday, January 29, 2001 at 2 p.m. , with the Rev. Roy White and the Rev. Alan Thorne officiating. Interment will be in Sherwood Memorial Park.
