Yes, I do remember you...brings back memories of the "Berha St." gang. I would really appreciate the picture of the lighthouse bridge. Of all the memories of Pulaski, that is one of my most favorite spots. Mattfer of fact, I went there last week and had a hotdog at the little deli there at the end of the bridge. I go to Pulaski just about every week to visit mother. She lives in Pulaski Village and I go there to help her with medicine and to see that all her bills are paid. Maybe we could meet for lunch there sometime. I go down to Master Chef about every week. I could not determine your email address from this message board...so send me an update via email. Is something wrong with my ISP or the VAMONTGO and VAPULASK mailing lists? I have received this message several times in the last few days and not only on this list. Will the list owner please contact me? Sorry, I don't know who it is. Thank you, Mary A. Acess to such records are guaranteed by the freedom of information act. Futhermore, various state agencies in the State of Virginia have offered to forward copies of such records for a nominal fee. Therefore, if you submit a request for copies to the Montgomery County Clerk's office and it is returned without explanation or comment, do not assume that the requested information does not exist. This is especially true if the returned request is accompanied by information about the services of a professional researcher. The roadblock may be due to incompetancy, laziness, contempt, and/or financial gain (kickbacks).

I reside in Montgomery County, VA and do quite a bit of research at our courthouse for myself and for others who do not live in the local area. All of the staff in the Clerks office are very pleasant and as helpful as they can possibly be. Sometimes I may have to wait a few minutes, if I need their assistance, but they always help me as soon as possible, and with friendly, warm attitudes. Diane whitlock@bev.net

I am not going to get into a heated discussion of positive-negative court house employees, but I just want to emphasis a comment someone made...just because you don't get a response doesn't mean the information isn't there. I wrote to a city in NC requesting copies of birth certificates for my Mother and her siblings. I was told they didn't have them. I just happened to be headed to Va and decided to stop and ask for the information in person. I was greeted with " Honey, we certainly do have that information... how many copies do you want?" It would be a great idea if we could organize on-line volunteers who would visit the court house for those of us who find it impossible to travel any more. We are all in the same boat...seeking information on our ancestors... I have info that I copied from court records as well as some books so I would be happy to share info if its legal to share or do look ups. I don't know about the rest of you all, but I happen to live in an area that doesn't seem to recognize SWVA even exists, so the library shelves here are totally empty on the countries I research. I have been forced to buy my own books in order to do any research work. By the way, have you checked out Jeff Weaver's web site? He is a well known author of Virginia history who has shared a tremendous amount of information with us. http://www.Is.net/~newriver/nr I doubt if anyone is looking for info in Okaloosa Co Fla but if you are, let me hear from you! My lines are Nunn, Moore, Odell, Breeding, Hurst, Elkins, Muirhead/Morehead and Tabor. If anyone is working on any of these names let me hear from you. J
I can't believe my eyes, READING such a Negative piece about MONTGOMERY County Clerks office Staff. If they don't have staff to look for your paper, YOU should be glad to have your money back, so you can get someone who is experienced with research to do it for you. I am one of the people that they count on to help, but with this kind of COMPLAINT, I don't believe i'm interested. Rena Worthen doreatr@rbnet.com

Montgomery County employees, extremely so. However, state cutbacks and the amount of requested research to various courthouses is often overwhelming, and I can see requests being returned. Not due to any kickbacks or financial gain, there just is not time in day to day work management to do all reseach for every request. This has hampered my research as I no longer travel any distance looking for those elusive ancestors. But to call any of these employees lazy, incompetant or looking for financial gain is wrong. My opinion, Mary A. Sutphin
